She continued on towards us, looking like she was about to run into us.

I veered to the left to avoid her.

The woman veered with me.

Was she crazy?  We were going to collide.

“Hey,” I cried, as she got closer.

Her eyes were wild, her face was florid.  She drew a knife.  “Bitch.”

“Oh my God,” I cried in horror, lurching back.  “Boys, get away.”

“You think you’ve got it all,” the crazy woman screamed, “but you’ve got nothing.”

She lunged forward and I tried to knock the knife away as I jumped back.

I felt a slice of pain.

Blood sprayed from my left arm.

“Mum,” Marc screamed.

Sean and Michael yelled in terror.

I clapped my right hand over the cut.

“Boys.  Run.  Get help.”  I
t was hard to think straight with the boys in danger.
I was so worried the madwoman was going to go for them.

The boys stood frozen to the spot.

“Now,” I bellowed.

They turned and ran.

I glared at the woman, guarding the boys as they ran.

The woman had stilled, her eyes glued to my bloody arm.  Her hand clenched tightly around the knife as she slowly raised her gaze to my face.

“Tom thinks he’s so perfect.  Let’s see how well he copes when he loses his other half.”

My suspicions that this was Rhonda crystallised.

Her words made my heart pump faster.  It sounded like she wanted to kill me.
She obviously hadn’t taken too well to being transferred.

“Rhonda.  Just take a breath.  Think of my kids.  They don’t deserve to lose me.”
I tried to make my voice as calm as I could with blood leaking out from under my fingers.

Rhonda’s
eyes flickered.

“They need their mum.”  I pursued the weakness that I sensed.
I had to get her focus away from Tom.

“They’re boys.  They’ll dump you when they grow up and then they’ll dump their woman.”  Rhonda snarled.  “I’m saving you the heartache.”

Rhonda lunged forward again.

I leaped backwards and turned and ran.  Now that the boys were away, I felt no need to face her.

I backtracked until I hit the Casuarina trail then turned and headed up the hill.  I didn’t want to lead her anywhere near the boys.

I risked a quick look behind me.  Rhonda was several paces away, her face flushed, her chest heaving.

If I could keep her chasing after me, it would give the boys time to get help.

I pounded up the black rubber trail, leaping up the log steps when I came to them.  Running was a little awkward with my arm clasped to stop it bleeding but I managed.
I’d run this path many times before and my feet pounded surely along the track.

Rhonda’s ragged breathing sounded behind me, getting fainter.

I risked another look.  She was falling behind.

I was glad for all the running I had been doing.  All I had to do was keep in front of her until the police came.

I continued up Casuarina Trail, slowing a little to keep Rhonda following.  If she gave up, who knew where she would head.

Frequent glances back kept track of her progress and finally revealed two blue clothed policemen gaining on Rhonda.

I kept on, trying to keep her attention on me so the police could take her by surprise.

The police gained and called to her to stop.  It didn’t take them long to secure her.  She was nearly collapsing from the run up the hill.  Even with my bloodied arm I was in better shape.

As soon as the police
had her cuffed I dropped to the ground, shaking.  My arm was starting to throb and I was too scared to lift my hand and have a look.  There were still trickles of blood coming out from the shallow edges that I hadn’t been able to cover.  The blood trail had probably helped to lead the police straight to us.
With time to think of all that blood, my stomach lurched and the world went dark.

Tom met me at the hospital where I had to get six stitches.

He clasped me in his arms and hung on tight.  “I’ve never been so frightened as when the boys called me and told me you’d been attacked.  I’m so glad you’re safe.”

I relaxed against him, finally feeling safe.  “Rhonda obviously snapped.”

“It turns out she was behind the leaked document.  The police came to me this morning because they had a page of the leaked document with the watermark of our department and a scribble
d note I’d put on the page
.  I told them if it was really me, I’d be smart enough to erase such markers.  That somebody was setting me up.  Then I pointed out my suspicions about Rhonda.  They went to her place and she ran out the back.  She must have gone to you.”  Tom rocked me back and forth.  “Who knew how crazy she was.  Apparently, she’s confessed to the vandalism too.”

But why?”

“I don’t know.  Maybe she transferred the angst from her ex-husband on to me when I had that first argument with her.  When she started affecting my work it must have given her some sense of power which she liked and it just escalated from there.”

“Well,
I’m just glad it’s over.”

“Me too.”

He took me home, rubbing
his hand along my good arm the entire journey home as if to reassure himself I was okay.  All was quiet in the house.  Mum and Dad had taken the kids.

Tom settled me on the couch.

“I was going to give you this on the weekend but I think now is the ideal time.”

He presented an old Tom and Jerry video.

I smiled.  The first present Tom had given me was a Tom and Jerry video.  He’d told me, “you’re my
Jerry
.  You run rings around me.”  Given our names, it had been a standing joke.

“I found it in the second hand shop.  We don’t have this one.”  He leant over and gave me a kiss, careful not to jostle my arm.

“There is no Tom without Jerry, just as there is no me without you.  I love you, Sherry.”

I smiled.  “I love you too.”

Chapter Eleven

Sixteenth Wedding Anniversary

Dear Sherry

This year it’s my turn to write letters to you.

Over the last year, I have fallen in love with you all over again.

I love the warmth I feel when I’m near you.

I love the softness I feel when I wrap you in my arms.  It’s like coming home.

Making love to you is like finding the other half to myself.  You fit me.

I want to bring you the pleasure that you bring me.

Accompanying this letter is a length of black rope.  Take it out, touch it, stroke it.  Tonight it will be stroking your skin.  I’m going to tie you up so that you know you belong to me.

The image of black rope against your creamy skin is making me hard.  Luscious creamy skin that I’m going to lick all over.

When I tie you up, I’m going to make a special knot to go over your clit so that every quiver in response to my licks will help rub your pussy into even greater excitement.

By the time I’m finished you’ll be hot and swollen and aching.  I’m going to fill that ache with my cock.  I’ll thrust my cock inside you and your pussy will eagerly suck me inside and clasp me in a grip that’s tight and wet and welcoming. Then I’m going to fuck you until we both come.

You are my one and only.

Love Tom
