He needed no further prompting and immediately shed his clothes and led her to the bed. Laying back, he pulled her on top of him and she straddled his waist full of desire and quivering with anticipation.

His hands immediately went to her breasts, his thumbs stroking her nipples.

Arching her back, she exhaled with delight as he entered her. She held herself still and savored the feeling of their bodies joining for the first time.

They found their rhythm together. Her senses soared and her rapture built and built until she reached a shattering climax above him. When she looked down at her beloved, she reveled in the discovery he had reached his own release.

Finally, she collapsed on top of him, and listened to his heart beating inside his chest. His hand stroked her naked back and she closed her eyes. Words didn’t need to be spoken. She could clearly feel his love for her and instinctively, she knew he felt her love as well. It had only taken one night of hell to find their own heaven.

Sometime later when Leah opened her eyes, she sensed everything was different. No more pain, no more fear, even the air seemed cleaner, her vision somehow brighter.

Leaning over, she placed a tender kiss on Remy’s lips and ran a gentle finger along his stubbled chin.

Carefully, she eased herself out of his arms and got to her feet, slipping into the T-shirt
she had worn the night before. Crossing the bedroom floor, she parted the heavy drapes. The stars in the sky were gone
, now replaced by
a bright china blue
. Below, things had changed as well.

A woman across the street was accepting her mail from the carrier. She looked up and waved. Leah returned the wave and smiled. Cars were now parked along the street. Lushly leaved trees and flower boxes brightened the street that had been barren and bleak the night before.

Joy bubbled up inside her and she let out a merry laugh that echoed through the room.

              ***

When Remy opened his eyes, he saw the shock of long dark hair and the laugh he had learned to associate with his wife, and thought it was just another cruel nightmare. But then Leah came into focus.

“Hurry, Remy, come over here!”

He grabbed for a pair of jeans and jumped into them, not bothering to button them as he walked with quick strides towards Leah.

“Look, Remy.”  She pointed to the street below.

Somehow, someway while they slept everything had changed. When Leah returned to him the night before, it triggered a change in his circumstances.

A second chance.

He suddenly became aware that he was twisting his grandfather’s wedding ring that was once again back with him. Only this time, it had moved to his left hand. He smiled, and the huge weight of despair he had carried for so long dissolved, and he took Leah into his arms and kissed her. She was simply radiant. Even her bruises had faded away.

Yes, it was a second chance that he would embrace wholeheartedly. A chance to begin anew. The chance for love and a family. But he knew there was still a price that needed to be paid to the Fates. After all, they had both sinned; both ended their natural life too early, and fo
r that, they would never see their families ever again. They existed, but on another plane of existence somewhere. But the promise of this new family was more compensation for the loss.

“Leah, my love, it’s time to start living again.”
