He smiled broadly. ‘You may think you can shock me, but as I said, I know you.’ He touched the tip of her nose with a forefinger. ‘So whatever it is you think will surprise me, I’m betting I’ll just go
‘meh — okay’
as if it’s nothing.’
‘Oh, really? Don’t think I can still shock you? That’s rather complacent of you, don’t you think? And not very flattering to me if I don’t hold surprises for you any more.’
‘I am a married man, so in tune with my wife, that nothing phases me anymore. I have learned to roll with the punches, go with the flow...’
‘Before you run out of clichés, I’ll wager you I can shock you.’
He reached for his wallet. ‘What’s the bet?’
Riley thought a moment. ‘Let’s say your Harley for a week if I succeed, and sex any way you want it if I don’t.’
Jack’s eyes widened. ‘You want my motor bike?’ He laughed. ‘And I already get sex the way I want it. Come up with something else.’
‘Okay smart alec, you decide.’
Jack laced his fingers, popped them, and tapped his forehead. ‘If you lose, I want breakfast in bed for a week.’
“That’s lame.’
‘With my wife.’
She chuckled. ‘You trying to get our cook to quit?’
‘Served by my wife.’
‘Hmm. This wager of yours is growing exponentially. But I’m not worried. You’re about to lose. Maybe I should have gone for the breakfast, served by you.’
He grinned wickedly. ‘Let’s have it.’
‘I’m pregnant.’
Jack’s face was priceless. Riley wished she’d had a camera on hand or at least her cell phone. She watched as a montage of emotions rippled across his handsome features. Bewilderment, like he hadn’t heard correctly. Surprise, accompanied by a couple of blinks. Then a dawning realisation, followed by amazement and sheer joy.
He rose from his perch on the rock wall, grabbed his wife then apologised for being brusque, and kissed her tenderly.
‘When,
chérie
?’ He bent and kissed her belly, which hadn’t begun to swell.
‘Sometime between Christmas and New Year’s. I take it you’re fine with this?’
Jack beamed, and Riley could feel the energy coursing through his veins. His body radiated heat from his excitement.
‘It’s too early to tell if you’ll have a son or a daughter,’ Riley said. ‘Promise me something?’
‘Anything.’
‘Belgian waffles, extra crispy bacon, and scrambled eggs please.’
For a second, Jack didn’t get it. Then he laughed, that deep, rumbling laugh Riley loved so much. ‘You shall have your breakfasts in bed, but no more biking.’
‘Jack!’
‘Protest all you like. No motorcycles until after the baby.’
She snuggled against him, blessing the day he’d offered her grapes, coffee, and his hand in marriage.
