Chapter 3

Alex watched her, waiting for her to say something, but he knew that it would take some time. She seemed to relax against his touch, and that was something at least. He smiled to himself. He nudged her as the man turned back into his human form.

“You should eat, Carla. It’ll make all of this easier.” He said kindly, and she nodded, taking a bite.

The fire danced before her, and with the beat of the drums, she found herself mesmerized. Carla watched everything as people played, danced, and many of the bonfires had people dancing around them already with the moon shining into their small clearing. “Because I welcome you here, and so they will too.” He said before grabbing out an apple from one of the baskets.

He tossed it to her, and she barely caught it before taking a bite. He stretched a little before starting to walk with her towards the edge of the clearing. She stepped carefully as they passed some bears, and she could have sworn that she heard one of them snort in what had to be amusement. Her cheeks started to color as she looked to the ground.

“Relax.” He said, and Carla nodded. He put his arm around her, and she couldn’t help but to lean into his touch in a way that made his smirk return all over again.
