Chapter 8
Kristy was on cloud nine when she got to work. Not even the smug look on her boss’ face was enough to upset her. She had never been so buzzed feeling after being with a man. There was something about Zed and even though she knew she would probably never see him again, she couldn’t help but feel revitalized. All she had needed was a hard man to take her and make her his, even if only for a night.
When she saw the police officers come in through the front door, she didn’t have any ill feelings. They were in there all the time, but when she met the gaze of a short woman, she knew that they were there for her. They had questions and insisted that she come down with them to the police station. The boss was smiling bigger when she left with them and Kristy realized then that he thought that she had something to do with it. They all did and she knew it was because of the way she had acted from the kiss and the man in the mask.
Some of the things that Zed had said made her wonder if he was that man, but it was his goodbye kiss that had sealed the deal for her. She knew that it was him and it was mixed feelings that she went into the meeting with. She didn’t say anything about him though, even as they threatened to arrest her. Kristy was sure that she hadn’t done anything wrong. All she had done was react badly, but Kristy didn’t think that it was a crime. It was hard to pay attention when everything was going on. Protocol didn’t matter when there was a gun and she explained herself more than once.
In the end, she was let go, but it looked like they wanted to hold her. Kristy was more than a little nervous about it all and she wished that she could talk to Zed about everything that was going on. She was worried, but he was long gone. She had told him that she didn’t want to see him again. She had made herself pretty clear and there was no going back.

Kristy was picked up a couple of weeks after the initial robbery. She was charged as an accessory to the crime. The prosecutor dragged out the proceedings as long as he could. He wanted her to give up her collaborators so that the bank could get the money back. It all came down to the money, something that Kristy knew nothing about. What she did know was that Zed had been one of the men, but she couldn’t get him in trouble. Not after what had happened between them. She lost her job at the bank before she was arrested and the bail was too high for her to afford. She tried to get it lowered, but the judge refused.
It was a whole new world for her. It was her fault for getting involved with the man and not telling on him, but she had been raised to never do that. Her faith then lay on the attorney she had hired and the law to sort out the truth. She didn’t have the money and she hadn’t let them rob the bank. She just hadn’t stopped them and that wasn’t a crime. Kristy had to believe that it would all come to light and she would be set free.
As the months wore on, she was becoming more desperate. She had just went to be arraigned where it stated that the actual trial wouldn’t start for another couple of months. That meant she was going to be left there to rot for longer. The worst part of it was that she was almost four months pregnant by the time she got the court date. Kristy covered her stomach as she was pulled from the courthouse. Things had gone from bad to worse and she was seriously going to have to start considering the very real fact that she was going to be giving birth at the jail.
Moving back to the cell when they walked her down and unhooked the hand cuffs. “Thanks Bernice. They feel a lot better than when Rex does it.”
The older woman just smiled back at her while she rubbed her wrists. Life was mundane and her hopes had been high that everyone would see how crazy it all was to think that she could do such a thing and set her free. But that is not what had happened. Instead she was meant to be there even longer. There had been a few thoughts, fleeting thoughts of giving up Zed to the police. It was what they wanted, but how could she give up the father of her unborn child?
Another week went by before her name was called. She went to the door and waited for them to take her wherever it was she was supposed to go next. She didn’t have a say in where she went, so Kristy had long since gave up trying to figure it all out. Just going with the flow with no expectations was the only way to make it in her current environment. It wasn’t bad or good, it just was what it was at that point.
“What is this about?” She finally did ask when they were taking her back towards booking. She hadn’t been passed that point since she arrived and even though she told herself to calm down and not hope, she couldn’t help the last flutter that wasn’t squashed by the institution.
“You are being released on bail. I guess you finally got the money up huh?”
Kristy didn’t know what to say. She was afraid that they were just messing with her or there was some mistake and they would soon realize the error of their ways. “Are you serious?”
The guard nodded and looked at her with the same solemn face that he always had. She couldn’t help the smile that broke out on her face. Hope be damned, she was going home. A lot had changed and there was a sense of elation as she made her way out of the concrete building. She hoped to never go back, but with her hand on her stomach, it felt like anything was possible.
What she didn’t expect was the man standing out by a car in the parking lot. He was looking at her with an intensity and she glanced down as she walked towards him. “You were the one that bailed me out?”
He nodded. “I didn’t know. As soon as I found out, I came back up here.”
She was happy to be out, but he had waited quite a while to get her out. “What took you so long?”
“You told me that you didn’t want me and I went down south to drink you away. You always came back in the morning though, so I had to do it all over again the next night. That was how I spent the first couple of months.”
“And the last few?”
“I spent those missing you.”
She liked the sound of it and her emotions were already trying to stream down her eyes. “Why are you here now?”
“Because I saw a picture of you in the paper. I saw that you were pregnant and I hoped it was mine. Is it mine?”
Kristy nodded and she finally let her gaze take him all the way in. He looked different. He wasn’t wearing his leather anymore and there was no bike around. He was standing in front of a car and she asked him where it was. It was the only thing she could think of.
“I couldn’t have our baby being put in danger on the back of my bike.”
“You got rid of your bike?”
“God no. I just got another car too.”
“So where are we going.”
“Away from here. Far away from here.”
“But I can’t leave.”
“You can’t stay either.”
She was fighting the feelings and trying to make a decision. He moved closer to her and pulled her to him gently. His touch was not like before. He held her like she was glass, his hand going to her protruding stomach. “You belong with me Kristy and I am here to take you with me.”
“Where will we go?”
“Wherever you want to go, but we need to leave now.”
She still wasn’t sure. That is, until he leaned down and kissed her on her lips. Kristy had dreamed of that very thing so much it was hard not to lose herself in his arms. He had always had that ability. To make her forget everything and though there was no telling what was ahead for them, it didn’t matter because they were together. “What if I said no?”
He kissed her again. “I didn’t ask, now get in.”

Chapter 1
“Lance, we can’t let this stand. If we let them get away with this, there will be nothing to stop another gang from coming in here and taking over.”
He looked back at his second and though he was thinking the same thing, he didn’t like the way the man was saying it. It was enough to have had one of his shipments confiscated from another gang. It was another to hear Billy talking to him as if he had a right to.
“I will take care of it. I always do. The Black Riders are not who they are because I sit on the sidelines while other people mess in our spot. The Demons caught me off guard, that’s it.” His tone told Billy that he was about to lose his cool and he didn’t want to be in the line of fire if he did. They had known each other since grade school and Billy backed off.
“I know you will boss. I just hate that it happened. You don’t even have to do anything. I will go down there right now and end this.”
Lance stopped him. “It may come to that after all, but for now, let’s just do what we came here to do. We came here to make some money. They didn’t get it all, so let’s get what we can and get out of here before we see blue lights flashing. It can always get worse Billy.”
Billy nodded his head. That was the reason that he was the boss, the thought to himself. Lance had a way of keeping everyone around him calm, even when he himself wanted to rip everything around him apart. He had to keep it together or there would be twenty bikers raising hell in the city and it never ended well. There was a reason the cops left them alone most of the time. They knew what their business was, but Lance paid off a few and contained his members. If that broke down, then everything would break down and he knew that he had to hold it together just a little while longer. No matter how good it sounded to let Billy have his way with it.
He watched the blonde man move towards the semi-truck and the open back. He had to turn away, his mind seething and he wasn’t sure what he was going to do. Lance would never admit that to anyone, not even Billy, but he was questioning every decision that he had made up till that point. It wasn’t the first time the Demons had tried to mess with them, but it was the first time that they had been so successful and it made him wonder where the information was coming from. He hoped that there wasn’t an insider, but it seemed like there had to be.
That gave him a headache to even think about. Most of the people in the Black Riders had been in it since its inception and that meant that someone that he knew and trusted was giving the rival gang information. The idea left him feeling sick to his stomach, as well as the dollar amount that the little play had cost him. It was far too much to just let it all go.
Lance was weary and by the time the rest of the shipment was loaded up, it was two o’ clock in the morning. It was not even a tenth of what he was supposed to be getting, what he had to pay for and now it looked like most of it was in the wind. It would never come back and he knew that the first hurdle was to get over that fact. Once he realized it was gone and he wouldn’t be able to recuperate the money, his mind went to revenge. Billy was right, though it was still not his place to say it, but he was right. Lance couldn’t just let it go, but he didn’t want the city erupting into a blood bath either.
He knew there had to be a better way, but it was late and he needed to sleep on it. One way or another it was going to be taken care of, but Lance didn’t want to let his anger make the decision for him. “All right guys. Let’s take it back to the warehouse.”
Billy gave him another questioning look but he ignored it that time. He had enough to worry about without getting all riled up from Billy again.

“You did what?”
Carl looked away, unsure what he was supposed to say. When he came to him with the news of fifty keys of snow for free, he was thinking his father would be happy about it, thrilled. That was a lot of money for nothing and he couldn’t believe the older man’s face looking back at him. His dark eyes were slits and his face was starting to get red under his tan skin. He backed up like he would from anything that was getting ready to blow.
“It was just sitting there and when the boys opened up the back and saw all the product, of course we took it.”
“Do you know who’s it is? You can’t really think that someone was going to leave all of that powder out there for nothing. It was supposed to be picked up and you just took it!”
Sam stood up and glared down at his son. He was trying to do more than he was supposed to and now it had all went tits up. There was a small amount of pride for his moxie, but he knew that it was going to cause them a lot of trouble. Sam had an idea of who they had stolen from and the man’s reputation proceeded him and he hoped that there was some way that it could all be worked out. The last thing Samuel wanted to do was get into a brawl with the Black Riders. Lance was not going to let it go.
“You have to take it back.”
“I can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t?” His eyes became almost unavailable for sight as he narrowed his view on his twenty year old son.
“Well, I already sold it.”
Sam sighed and sat back down. He was going to give himself a heart attack with worry, but there was a number he had to hear before he started to really freak out. “How much?”
“Twenty.”
“Per kilo right?”
His son was melting under the pressure, but Sam had to know how bad he had messed up. When he said it was for all of it, he exploded. “You sold it all for the price of one?”
“To who?”
“The Castor twins.”
Sam put his head in his hands for a minute. Carl had messed up many times before, but never that bad. “Dad, it’s not that big of a deal. They will never know it was us.”
“They saw you leaving.”
“Yeah but…” Carl hadn’t thought it all the way through and that was before he had done the math in his head.
“You have to go get it back, right now.”
“I don’t think they are going to go for that.”
“You better figure it out Carl. There is going to be hell to pay from both sides if we don’t figure it out.” Sam told Carl to leave and he reached into his bottom drawer and took out a bottle of whiskey. How was he supposed to fix everything that time? He didn’t know. It may be even worse than he had first thought when he stopped Carl and told him to send someone else. Lance was not known to leave anyone living who crossed him and Sam realized then that he was going to have to get Carl out of the city, instead of pretending like there was any way that he would be able to handle what came next.
“Son, you are going to have to go north to your grans.”
Carl looked at him in disbelieve. “I can’t just run away father.”
Sam just shook his head. “No, but I can’t bury one of my children. If something happened to either one of you kids, I would never be able to live with it. Lance doesn’t play around and he is going to be out for revenge. I just need you to go up there for a bit until I get it all sorted out.”
He wasn’t so sure that he could, but he knew he had to try, for all their sakes
