It was part of what made his relationship so special with Kate. They had fragile hours, fragile times that could be brought to an abrupt end so easily. And he wanted to do his job. He wanted to be the guy everyone depended on. And yes, even with the potential of sacrifice, he still wanted to do it.

Kate had been pensive. “I think it affects me as much as I know it affects Gretchen,” Kate said to him while she sat by the open window of the Inn where they were staying. The night breeze had brushed clean her beautiful face, ruffling her hair, making it dance while she sat and watched the lights flickering on the trees outside. The downtown area was always brightly lit, like Christmas, she’d told him. One year they decided to leave all those decorations up year-round.

They had put a deposit down on a house not too far from Nick and Devon’s winery. Kate wanted to work with Nick on the winery project, along with Cooper’s father-in-law and several others of the SEAL Team 3 investors who were part-owners. The little cottage was barely larger than the one Kate used to live in when they’d first met. But anything with Kate was just right. The size of his life was just right. The size of his job was just right. The size of his love would be growing forever.

“My time,” he said as he drew her up to her feet. “Remember?” he said as he showed her two fingers and then pointed them at his own eyes. “Eyes focused on me.”

“Yes, Tyler. My eyes always will be focused on you.”

He rubbed his thumb across her lower lip and then pressed his against her mouth. “We are the lucky ones, Kate. We have today. So many people don’t even find a today like this.”

She hugged him. He could feel dampness on his arm. He stroked the back of her head, fingers lazily kneading through her hair.

“No more tears, okay?” he said as he pulled back and lifted her chin. “Love me like that first time in Portland. That first night, when we found ourselves under the umbrella in the rain. Remember that night?”

“I do.” She smiled and showed him with her hands.

“I can see you do. We’ll have lots of nights like these. Our stories will go on for decades. Old and toothless. I told the guys that once. They thought I was nuts.”

Tyler would remember the beautiful sex that night. He wasn’t going to tell her he’d always remember her face in the moonlight as she cried out for him, as her thighs hugged his hips and he felt her shudder beneath him. How it would be the last thing he would think about if his time ever came. How she made him feel. How she brought joy and that ache of hoping to God he didn’t have to ever live without her.

All her soft places were stronger and harder than his. All her sighs held worlds of possibility. He wanted to experience every crevice of her body, every thought of her mind. Everything from the way she folded her clothes to the way she dug in the garden. He’d read books to her. He’d rub her feet and change diapers if that were granted. He’d rub her back when she was tired, and he’d tell her she was the most beautiful woman in the world when she was past her prime. He never wanted her to feel anything but loved.

She was what he’d always wanted. She was, after all, his heart, and always would be.

The End

Sharon Hamilton

NYT and USA Today best-selling author Sharon Hamilton’s award-winning Navy SEAL Brotherhood series have been a fan favorite from the day the first one was released. They’ve earned her the coveted Amazon author ranking of #1 in Romantic Suspense, Military Romance and Contemporary Romance categories, as well as in Gothic Romance for her Vampires of Tuscany and Guardian Angels. Her characters follow a sometimes rocky road to redemption through passion and true love.

Her
Golden Vampires of Tuscany
are not like any vamps you’ve read about before, since they don’t go to ground and can walk around in the full light of the sun.

Her
Guardian Angels
struggle with the human charges they are sent to save, often escaping their vanilla world of Heaven for the brief human one. You won’t find any of these beings in any Sunday school class.

She lives in Sonoma County, California with her husband and two Dobermans. A lifelong organic gardener, when she’s not writing, she’s getting
verra verra
dirty in the mud, or wandering Farmers Markets looking for new Heirloom varieties of vegetables and flowers.
