“You have six months left to live?”

Grant pinned her with an unamused look. “No, you‟re going to be stuck with me

for a long while.”

Celeste looked startled herself at that one, but not unhappy, if he didn‟t miss his

guess. “You‟re an ax murderer?”

“Now you‟re being ridiculous.”

“You‟re not a legal citizen and you need a green-card marriage?”

Tired of her guessing games, Grant settled his hands on her shoulders and forced

her to look him in the eye. “I‟m your mystery man.”

Finally silent, Celeste searched his face for a few seconds and then breathed deeply.

Grant braced himself for yelling.

“I know.”

Grant cocked his head at her. “You…know?”

Celeste nodded, a small smile breaking free. “Yes. I figured it out last night.”

“When last night?”

She began to pull back slightly. “At the restaurant.”

“Are you kidding? I tried, like, a hundred times to tell you last night and you kept

distracting me!”

“I know that too. I was doing it on purpose.” She at least had the grace to look

sheepish at that admission.

Grant‟s heart took a dive when a thousand reasons why she wouldn‟t have wanted

him to tell her that he was her mystery man crowded his mind. She didn‟t want him. Or

she wanted to see if their chemistry was as good in person as it had been over text

message but that‟s all she wanted from him. He wanted to sink down into his own little

pity party but one small spark of hope ignited when he saw that she was smiling at him

again.

“Why didn‟t you tell me you knew?”

“Why didn‟t you tell me you were my mystery man?” she countered.

“Honestly, I wasn‟t sure if you‟d be happy about it or not. When you first came in

to get your phone…I saw the messages from your ex and I figured that we could have

some fun together but…”

“But things got a lot more serious a lot faster than you thought,” Celeste concluded

for him.

“Yes. Exactly. What we did together was mind blowing. Better than anything I‟ve

had in real life.”

She reached out to touch his hand. “I felt the same way. Why do you think I looked

for you so hard?”

Grant swallowed and turned his hand over to clasp hers, more confident now that

she was touching him. “And then I got to know you in the bar. But it seemed like every

time you came around you were there with Noah or looking for someone else and I

started to worry that it hadn‟t meant as much to you as it did to me. I knew I had to tell

you last night and I wanted to all through dinner but I didn‟t want to take the chance

that you would leave and it would be over.”

Celeste shook her head at him. “How could you think that? You‟re a gorgeous,

funny, wonderful man and I want you so much. There‟s pretty much nothing in this

world that was going to stop me from sleeping with you last night.”

Grant leaned in and kissed her softly. Now that he had made his confession, he felt

a lot better, but half of the story was still missing. “Why didn‟t you tell me that you

knew last night?”

Celeste looked away. “I guess I wanted to punish you a little bit. I wanted you to

feel some of the uncertainty that I‟ve been feeling. Do you know how bad I felt when I

thought that I wanted two men? You as my mystery man inspired all kinds of—you

make me hot and uninhibited. But as Grant the bartender you make me laugh and you

listen to me and you make me feel so sexy. I felt like…like a slut, feeling such powerful

desire for two different men at the same time.”

Grant closed his eyes and was relieved when she allowed him to hug her close.

“Dammit, Celeste, I‟m sorry. There‟s no way in the world that you could ever be a slut

and I promise I never thought of it like that. And I‟m so, so sorry that I ever made you

doubt yourself.”

Celeste snuggled closer to him and wrapped her arms around him before

continuing. “Then I didn‟t get much sleep last night because I started to worry that

maybe you had never planned to tell me at all. Maybe this was only a fling for you

when it was so much more to me.”

Grant pulled back and looked her full in the eye. “It‟s more to me too. I‟m crazy

about you and I‟m sorry.”
I love you.
The words hovered there on his lips but he knew

that there would be time enough later to say them. He never wanted Celeste to think

that he was using those special words just to make up with her.

Celeste snuffled and smiled at him, a mess but still the most gorgeous woman he

had ever seen. “I accept your apology…and I‟m crazy about you, too.”

Grant grinned at her and then laid her down on the mattress. “You know what I

think? We should seal this deal with something special.”

Celeste laughed up at him from where she lay on the bed. “I think you‟re right and

I have just the idea.” She reached over to the nightstand and grabbed her phone,

shaking it at him. “I think I need a real-life reenactment of those texts.”

Grant felt his blood fire up. “This time I promise you‟ll know
exactly
who‟s making

you scream. No mystery about it.”

Celeste giggled and looped her arms around his neck. “I‟m counting on it.”
