He laughed at her cold demeanor but kept it moving. She seemed annoyed with him, but it was her damn fault for having her face in her phone.

Shorty walked to the visitor’s side of the gym, so he assumed that she was with the opposing team. Miego sat down with his sister to watch his brother play. He was checking for shorty, but he wasn't the type to chase anyone, especially someone who didn't want to join the race.

For the most part, things were going smoothly, although the game was wild and out of control. Shit changed drastically when Miego heard yelling coming from the court.

“Put your hands on me again and Imma fuck you up.”

Miego's eyes went straight to the center of the court where one of the kids on the rival team was yelling at his brother. He stood in anticipation of the situation getting bad. Game or no game, Miego wasn't about to let anybody put their hands on his little brother. That shit wasn't happening. He knew that Tron was more that capable of defending himself, but as his big brother, anytime shit popped off and he was around, Miego was going to handle it.

The game had been intense and it was the last few seconds, with Tron’s team up by six points and the other team was pissed off. In the hood, taking an L like that from a rival team translated into putting your hands on somebody.

“Yo, if you can't take that shit, get off the court,” Tron yelled, holding his hands in the air to make sure the refs could see that he wasn’t making contact.

“Nigga, fuck you,” dude yelled and shoved Tron in the chest.

Miego damn near leaped out the stands to get to his brother, but before he could reach him, Tron nailed the guy right in his jaw. The refs were pulling the two apart, but Miego hit the court, grabbed his brother around the chest from behind and dragged him to the sideline. Tron continued to yell across the court the entire time. Miego could see Train out the corner of his eye making his way toward them with his hand under his shirt where Miego knew he was holding.

“The fuck is your problem? You wanna lose your scholarships?” Miego yelled as he grabbed a fist full of his brother’s jersey and pulled him to his chest so they were face to face.

Tron and Miego were the same height, but Miego had him by about twenty pounds of muscle, thanks to the extra weight lifting time that jail had provided. It wouldn't have mattered anyway. Tron knew better than to challenge his big brother or he would wear an ass whooping for it. The two brothers had fought enough times to know who would ultimately win. Although Tron would go toe to toe with Miego, there was no doubt that Miego would win.

“No, but that nigga put his hands on me. I ain't no bitch, Miego. The fuck you expect me to do? Just take that shit?”

“In here, on that court, hell yeah. Those refs and these coaches hold your future in their hands. One stupid mistake and all that shit is gone. Everything you worked for.” Miego aggressively tapped his brother’s forehead with his index finger. “Use your fucking head, man. That nigga ain't worth it. He ain't got shit to lose, but he knows you do. Think about your son.”

“Tron’s nostrils flared and his chest heaved in and out. He knew his brother was right, but it didn't mean that he was okay with the way Miego was handling him.

“Man, fuck that,” Tron yelled and then tried to walk away, but Miego jacked him up again by his jersey. “Calm your ass down. You know I’m right. Now go finish this game or take your ass to the locker room.”

Tron glared at his brother before he knocked his hand away from his jersey and went to join his team. His coach had been watching the entire time, but he knew Miego and respected him enough to let him handle his brother.

Both teams set up on the court and finished the rest of the game without incident. After the game, Miego hung back and waited for his brother after his sister left with a guy she swore wasn't her boyfriend, but who she damn sure seemed to spend a lot of time with. Train chilled with him for a minute until a shorty caught his attention, and then he was out. Miego was posted up outside the locker room with one of his old fuck buddies cozied up next to him, hoping that she was about to get lucky. But all Miego was interested in at the moment was getting his brother out of the gym before he had a chance to do anything stupid.

“What are you about to get into?” Lee Lee asked as she let her hand move up and down Miego’s arm.

“My damn bed.”

Lee Lee grinned, thinking it was an offer, so Miego quickly cleared that up.

“Alone,” he said and slid his body further down the wall to create some distance between the two of them.

Just as he did, the first thing he noticed was shorty with the fucked up attitude. She frowned at him and he winked at her. She rolled her eyes and Miego chuckled before blowing her a kiss. Shorty turned to walk off, but because she was so focused on trying to show Miego her disapproval, she ran right into the back of her homegirl who had stopped to talk to someone. Embarrassed, she blushed, which Miego found to be cute as hell.

Lee Lee was pissed. “Yami ain't fucking with nobody but her man, so you might as well let that go.”

Lee Lee knew she was being petty, but she didn't care. She wasn't about to let Miego stand there and disrespect her by sweating another female. Especially not Yami. She hated Yami because they were all from the same hood, but Yami and her sister, Yaz, thought they were better than everyone else around there.

Actually, neither Yami or Yaz felt that way. They just wanted more out of life than just some hood nigga and a few stacks, but it was easier for the neighborhood chicks to hate on them instead of respecting the fact that they believed there was more to life than being hood rich.

Miego looked down at Lee Lee with a smirk. He knew she was hating on shorty, and the fact that she was, had him really checking his mystery girl. Plus, Lee Lee’s assertion that he couldn't get her because of who her man was, presented a challenge that made him even more interested. Miego was too arrogant to ask who she was because he wasn't the type to sweat anybody. Shorty was bad as fuck, but he wasn't about to chase her. If he ran into her again, though, he planned to bring her into his circle whether she liked it or not.

Chapter Two

“S
o, you really can't smoke this shit?”

Miego looked up at Train and laughed because Train was looking at him like the world was about to end. “Nah, I can't, not right now anyway. You know they got me on lock with these damn drug tests. If I fail one, they’re locking my ass up, no questions asked. TK’s sister is a PO now, and as soon as I can get my case switched to her, I’ll be straight. She’ll hook me up, but for now, I have to do shit the right way.”

“Karlin?” Train asked, to clarify which one of TK’s sisters Miego was talking about.

They had all grown up together and he knew for sure that Karlin hated Miego because he wouldn't fuck with her like she wanted him to. Karlin and Kia had come to blows many times before because Miego was messing with both of them.

Miego laughed. “Yeah, nigga, who else?”

“Yo, you ’bout to be screwed, my nigga. Well, unless you plan on breaking her off. You know Karlin don't fuck with you like that.” Train took a long pull from the blunt he was holding, held it in for a few minutes, and then released a cloud of smoke.

“Nah, I’m good on that. I know how to handle Karlin.” Miego chuckled, but he knew he would have to play nice, which meant breaking her off occasionally. He was good with that, though. Karlin was straight as fuck, and she knew her place.

“Yeah, i’ight, remember you said that shit when she flips the fuck out on your ass, ʼcause you know it's coming.”

Again, Miego chuckled before he lifted his glass of Hennessy.

“I just need to figure out what my next move is,” Miego pondered aloud.

“Shit, you said you’re done. I don't believe that shit, but I’ll let you keep thinking that. So, what’s next? Buy a studio or some shit like that? You know you’re nice as hell with those beats and shit. Get you some artists and do something with that. Hell, it’s plenty of niggas around here that can rap. Shit, you might fuck around and get me on a track.”

Miego burst out laughing, damn near spitting Hennessy on his clothes as Train flashed him his platinum grill.

“The fuck, Train? Your ass can hardly complete a sentence. You damn sure can’t rap.”

“That’s what the fuck you’re for. You make me a hot ass beat that’s so fye, nobody will give a fuck what I’m saying on the track. That’s all these niggas do nowadays anyway. Shit, if they can do it, it I can do it.”

“You're ignorant as fuck for that, but you right, though. I thought about it. Who knows? I just need to make a few big deals, make some quick money, and then I’m out. I need something legit.”

“You really think you can be done?” Train got serious all of a sudden.

Miego thought about it for a minute. “Shit, I have to be. I ain't going back to prison, fuck that. That shit ain't for me.”

“My nigga, you ain't gotta be done, just don't get caught.”

Miego looked at Train with a side eye but didn't say anything.

“The fuck you looking at me like that for?”

“Nothing, that’s the same shit Kia said about me putting in work again. It just hit me wrong for a minute.”

“Hold the fuck up, yo.” Train sat up straight in his chair and his whole demeanor changed. “How long you known me, Miego? All your got damn life, right? Don't ever let that thought cross your mind. I fucked that hoe and she been on her knees a few times, but I don't discuss business with her, so I ain't on no bullshit with her.”

Miego thought about it for a second, and just that quickly he was over it. Train was his people; if he trusted anyone with his life, it was Train. “Calm the fuck down. We good, bruh, I know you would never cross me like that. I’m just processing right now. Don't take that shit personal.”

Train watched Miego for a few more seconds like he was trying to decide if he believed him before he let it go. He understood why he would be questioning shit. Hell, he would too, but Miego was family, and that meant he would never play him on any bullshit. Especially some shit that would have gotten him knocked.

“I feel you, but real talk. When you’re ready, let me know. I got some shit on the table right now, and if you want in, you’re in. It's whatever,” Train said.

“I’ight, we’ll talk, but let me get ready to head out. I’ll hit you up in a few days.” Miego finished off his drink and stood, followed by Train.

The two men dapped each other and Train walked Miego to the door of his three-bedroom apartment. It was similar to the one Miego had prior to being raided by the cops and locked up three years ago, and he planned to get another one soon. For now, he was just laying low. He was patient and knew that his time was coming.

After Miego made it to the street and got in his car, he pulled away from the curb en route to his mother’s shitty ass apartment with a lot on his mind. He knew he was over being in the streets, but he also knew that money made shit happen. He didn’t have enough yet to walk away, which meant that he had to make some big moves to get where he needed to be.

When he pulled up in front of his mother’s building, he surveyed his surroundings. Dope boys on the corners, fiends tucked away in the allies. He knew the area and situation intimately because it wasn't long ago that the dope boys on the block used to be his dope boys, and the fiends were his clients.

He chuckled to himself as he got out of his whip and walked up the steps to his mother’s building. He decided to chill for a minute before going inside because he wasn't ready to have that
have
you figured out your life
conversation with his mother. It was a daily thing, and he knew it was all from love, but the shit irked him. Talking about it wasn't going to change shit. He just had to make some moves which involved some illegal shit, and he couldn't tell Ginette that. Once he got his money right, he would be out. For now, he just had to do whatever necessary.

Miego leaned back on the concrete stairs, looking up and down the block, not really paying attention to anything in particular. He was aware of his surroundings out of habit, and he still had a few enemies out there. Miego didn't always do shit the right way, so there were a few people who wouldn't mind taking him out. Most of them were too scary and weak to try it, but there was always the possibility.

Not long after he was situated, his phone started ringing. He almost ignored it, but he knew Kia was persistent as hell. If he didn't answer her call and shut her down, she would keep calling.

“What?”

“So you call yourself mad?” Kia snapped, which made him chuckle.

He had been sending her calls to voicemail since he left her spot, which he knew as pissing her off. She’d always had access to him, so she wasn't used to him putting her off.

“The fuck I need to be mad for, Kia? You ain't my damn girl, so your opinions don't matter to me.

“Oh, so, I’m not your girl?”

“Hell no. My girl wouldn't be offering up head for weed. The fuck you think this is?”

“Who told you that? I know Train’s lying ass didn't—”

“Yo, before you even fix your mouth to say some ignorant shit, just cancel that. That’s my peoples and he ain't got no reason to lie to me, Kia, but your ass does.”

Miego looked up while he waited for Kia to respond and a smirk spread across his face as he noticed shorty from his brother’s game heading his way. She had a little girl on her hip who was damn near half her size because she was so damn short. She was laughing and talking to the little girl, so she hadn't paid him any mind until Miego whistled to get her attention. Of course, she rolled her eyes and frowned at him.

“Train is lying, and it's fucked up that you’ll take his word over mine after all this time.” Kia's voice irritated him, and he wasn't about to go back and forth with her, so he decided to end the call.

“I don't have time for this bullshit, Kia, but I need to holla at somebody real quick, so I’ll hit you back.”

Yami was now right in front of him, about to pass by. Miego stood and jogged down the stairs then stepped in front of her.

“You just gon’ ignore me like that, damn?” Miego said with a grin. He held his phone at his side with Kia still on it.

“Am I walking on four legs?”

Miego looked at Yami in confusion. “Nah.”

“Then why the hell are you whistling at me like I’m a dog or something?”

Miego rubbed his chin and bit his bottom lip to hide the smirk that was trying to surface. The fact that she was trying to check his behavior had him smiling inside.

“My bad, shorty, no disrespect, I promise. I just wanted to get your attention.”

“Next time, try saying hello, or excuse me.” She rolled her eyes again and tried to step around him, but with every move she made, Miego matched it.

“Umm, will you please move? I have somewhere to be, and you’re being rude to...” Yami tilted her head to read the name of the caller on Miego's phone. “…rude to Nakia.”

Miego couldn't help but smile as he lifted his phone to his face. “Kia, I have to go. My future wife said that I was being rude to you.”

Kia yelled something, but Miego ignored her and ended the call.

“Is that better?” Miego asked.

Now it was Yami’s turn to laugh. “You might want to call her back because if you’re tripping with her, thinking that you might have something with me, then you just messed up a good thing for no reason. I’m not your future anything.”

“Who said it was a good thing?” Miego asked.

“Honestly, I don't know what it was and I don't care. Just don't end it because you think you have a chance with me. I’m not looking for anything with anybody.”

“So, you don't have a man then?”

“That's really none of your business, is it?” She looked up at Miego with her eyes narrowed.

“If you have a man, just say so, and I’ll let you go. It's that simple.”

Miego lied, he didn't care who her man was or if she even had one. It was temporary in his mind because he was feeling her.

“No, I don't, and just because a female says she's not looking for anything doesn’t mean she already has someone. Maybe I’m just happy with me.”

Miego chuckled and eyed the little girl who was sitting on Yami’s hip. “You’re right. That’s your shorty?

“Yeah, why?” Yami asked.

“She don't look nothing like your red ass. I’m just saying. I mean, she’s cute, but she damn sure don't look like you. Her damn daddy must be dark as hell, and she’s half your size, so you need to put her down and let her walk. I know she has to be heavy as fuck.”

Miego had his eyes on Yami’s daughter, so he had no idea that Yami was glaring at him. He hadn't actually said anything offensive about her daughter, but the fact that he was saying anything at all had her ready to cuss him out.

“Anybody ever tell you that you’re rude as fuck?” Yami snapped.

She was in the process of stepping around him again, and this time, he didn't move. But
she
stopped, not really knowing why. He was pissing her off with the mention of her daughter, but for some reason, she felt the need to stay put instead of keeping it moving like she had originally planned.

“All the damn time.” Miego finally looked at Yami as the sun caught her brown eyes, making them damn near glow while she peered at him.

“Yeah, well you might want to consider that as constructive criticism and do something about it.”

Miego laughed. “How the fuck am I rude just because I said she don't look like you?”

“You're rude because you shouldn't talk about someone's child, especially if you don't know them.”

“I apologize if you're offended, and I don't see why because I said she was cute. But I’m just stating facts. She don't look like you. You’re bright as fuck and she’s brown skinned.”

Miego had his eyes on the little girl again, who was now watching him. She smiled, which made him smile back. He had never really been around kids other than his nephew, who was still a baby, but she was cute. If she was a package deal to get with Yami, then he was about to be stepfather of the year.

Yami let out a sigh and then adjusted her daughter on her hip. “Please get out of my way so I can go.”

“Give me your number and I will.”

“Why would I do that? You don't know me and I don't know you. I just told you I'm not looking for anybody.”

“I know you, Yamiah, I just want to know you better. You might not be looking, but maybe since I found your stubborn ass, then you might actually want to give it a shot,” Miego said.

Him calling her by her name had Yami feeling some type of way because he had obviously done his research. She wondered if he knew who her daughter’s father was. That was definitely going to be an issue. She had to admit that she was intrigued. Miego was nice on the eyes with his tall, muscular frame, mocha skin, and low cut wavy hair, looking like he had just got out of a barber’s chair. His body was covered with tattoos, but the ones across his hands let her know that she needed to keep moving.

Her daughter’s father was crazy as hell as it was, and her messing with a guy in a rival gang was a definitely a no, no. She didn't need that drama, so as much as she wanted to know more about Miego, she decided against it.

Yami and Black technically weren't together, but in his mind, she belonged to him. Part of that had to do with the daughter they shared, but Black just wouldn't let go. No matter how many females he had fronting her, calling her out her name and trying to put their hands on Yami, Black still believed he had some type of claim to her. That was one of the reasons why she was working so hard to move up out of their neighborhood. Distance was the only answer to her problem with Black. He was born in the streets, raised in the streets, and would never leave, not even for her. In her mind, that was her out.
