Chapter 5

I got all cleaned up for my mother's wedding, and during the entire ceremony, the stiffness I felt in my ass from my sexcapade with Rupert was a nice, rosy reminder of our intimate moments just a little bit ago. I wasn't sure how I was going to handle what was going on between us, but he was right, I couldn't run away until I knew for sure if this was something real or not between us.

I think it bugged me that he was right. He seemed so cocky and arrogant at times, but I don't think he was trying to be, I think he was just confident and believed what he was saying. I could barely focus during the wedding, I was thinking about Rupert who kept sending me smoldering glances during the wedding that had me blushing.

My mother finally caught one of the looks between us and raised a brow. She gave me a look that said 'this is not the time or place'. I knew that look well. It's the one she'd given me growing up all the time right before the verbal warning came that my ass would be in major trouble the minute we were alone.

I averted my eyes from Rupert's, I focused for the rest of the wedding, thought I found it hard to ignore him. My mother kept giving me glances during the reception that said she was going to talk to me before they went off on their honeymoon. They were going to some exotic island that I'd never heard of, and wasn't invited along on. I would be staying here.

With Rupert.

Gulping at the thought of all the trouble the two of us could get into trouble with, I laughed a little. We weren't teenagers, and just because we'd become step-siblings when my mother had married his father, we hadn't grown up together and we were already involved.

I had avoided Rupert before the wedding, but I had noticed him. I had noticed his volunteer work, and that he was out with his horses each day working hard. He did a lot of training himself and he gave riding lessons to disabled children. He was a good man and did a lot of good deeds, despite having a playboy reputation. No one had mentioned all the little things he did. The non-exciting gossipy things. They focused on his charm, and good looks and sex appeal and the tabloids had painted a pretty sexy picture and created a reputation I had bought into.

Underneath all of that, was a good man, with a good heart. A man a woman could love, if she'd let herself. The sex was out of this world. He was just the right kind of dominating lover in the bedroom, while still being excited by his woman's pleasure and ensuring she had fun along the way that made it hard to resist falling into bed with him. Or the nearest linen closet.

He was crooking his finger at me trying to get me to come across the room to him, and sipped my glass of champagne and shook my head and mouthed the word 'no' at him.

Furrowing his brow he pointed again and gave me a look that said he'd make me pay for it if I didn't listen to him, I wasn't sure why I listened, but before I knew it, I was across the room facing him.

"What do you want?" I hissed at him. I convinced myself I'd walked over there to keep from causing a scene. It had nothing to do with visions of us in a linen closet together with me on my knees tasting him.

"You, of course." He grinned at me and had a waiter refill my glass. When the waiter left he faced me. "I never thought of myself as the type to settle down and get married, but when I picture my life without you Lara, I'm willing to take that leap of faith. I don't believe in divorce, I want you to think about where this is going between us, because if I go all in, I don't go back."

I stared at him, in open mouth shock and then tried to brush him off with an awkward joke. "Well, you do go back. In the back of me, that is."

"Lara!" He glared at me and looked around to make sure no one heard me.

Satisfied that I rattled his cage a little I sipped my drink and watched him over the rim of my glass. I sent him a naughty smile and realized that these little verbal games with him were something I looked forward too. The hot looks he sent me had me dreaming and wanting more, and the actual real experience left me completely satiated and impatient for our next encounter.

"I don't know where I stand with all of this Rupert, but I'm coming to terms with the fact that I want to find out." I told him quietly. "If you break my heart though, I swear to god I'll castrate you."

"I would expect nothing less." He told me, and he kissed me. Shocking many of the people around us. He grabbed my wrist to keep me from spilling the glass that I was about to drop and pulled me closer to him. He had no shame and he'd just publicly declared me as his.

When he pulled back to look at me, I'd forgotten where we were standing for a moment and why. Seeing my mom look at me across the room I blushed and hoped she wasn't upset. Instead, she winked at me and sent me a little sign of thumbs up.

"Rupert, you realize we can't go back. They took our picture; it's going to be in the papers." I blinked at him, almost wishing I could fall through the floor.

"Let them. You're mine Lara, I wasn't going to publicly declare my intentions until you'd come around, but I knew from the moment I met you, that you were destined to be mine." He told me and touched my cheek lightly before grinning at me. "Besides, you owe me a return favor."

"A favor?" I blinked at him in confusion.

"Yes, I have a few things planned for that mouth of yours as soon as we can get out of our family obligations of making a long enough appearance to appease the masses. You're going to be mine, Princess. I'm planning on doing filthy, dirty things to that mouth of yours as soon as we are alone." He promised me with such a hot, smoldering look, all I could do is nod in agreement.

This party couldn't end fast enough.

Chapter 1

Lois was taking some time to get used to the new family and the ways of the Dragonkin. Her husband Colin had shown her that life was so much more than she had thought. While she had worked with him being his secretary and meeting the other side of the world, she realized that there was so much she didn’t know. Something she did know was that now she was his mate and pregnant, there was a big target on her back. There were not just dirty looks from her own new clan, but she had heard whispers of an enemy clan.

Her mind was full of all the shadows in the dark whenever Colin was away. She still worked with him at the law firm and though many treated her differently, she still got looks of lust from some of the clients. Lois didn’t know what most of them were, but the longer she was in the new world, the more she learned. What she had gleaned though, was not information that made her relax.

There were big changes in her body as well. While she was only a month pregnant, she looked to be several months along. Lois had a noticeable bump in her stomach and there was extra movement that she had not anticipated. She couldn’t go to the doctor, so she was left to meet up with Colin’s mother for her prenatal care. The meeting would bring more surprises that left the young woman reeling.

“Come sit down Lois. You are getting further along. It seems that the first time did the trick.”

Lois blushed, her pale skin turning red on her cheeks from the older woman’s words. There was no sense of propriety in the Castine family. She should have known there wouldn’t be when they were forced to mate in front of everyone of the clan. Lois had thought that it was a one-time thing, but in reality, she had seen many bodies entwined together.

“Yes Marline. I feel bigger than I should be. I can’t imagine how large my stomach will be in 9 months.”

“Oh dear, you do not have that long. Maybe two more months, tops. Then you will be a mother and a real part of the clan. No one can take that away from you. They will all have to accept you then.”

Lois nodded and hoped that what she said was true. Although many had welcomed her with open arms, there were a few holdouts that had considerable power. While she had tried to be nice to them, Colin had warned her that the best thing to do would be to ignore them. “They will come around. You are queen and should not appear weak.”

“I hope so Marline. It is strange sometimes because I can feel them in my head, rooting around.”

The woman’s dark brown eyes went to hers and for a second she felt her own movement in her mind. “You will have to learn to block this better. We are not the only family that can get in there. While it is not okay for them to do this, maybe they are testing you. Our vulnerability is always in the weakest link.”

“And that is me?”

“Of course dear, you are human.”

Lois closed her eyes for a moment. That was not the first time she had heard it. Even with as many times as it was said, it was still hard to think of humans as the lower race. In the eyes of the paras, that was exactly what she was, lower.

“Yes I know. I can’t really help that though. I wonder sometimes how much easier it would be if I had never met Colin.”

“Well you would be dead dear. Everything happens for a reason you know. It is the way of things. It is not for us to question.”

“Thank you Marline. You have always made me feel welcome here and I thank you for that. I love your son and I couldn’t think of how my life would be without him.”

Marline smiled. She could see the love between the two of them. She too had had her own reservations, but it was magical when the two were together. This showed her that it was the way of things. It was the way it was supposed to be.

“Sometime soon, you will have to stay with the clan more. There is a house in the mountains that all of our pregnant women in the clan go to. I am sure you have heard of the Blacks?”

Lois nodded. It was the Castine’s family enemy and that was the name that she heard in the whispers. She still wasn’t sure why there was such an animosity between the two families. She just knew that there was some. Lois had learned not to ask questions, but to wait and let the information be given to her.

“Well it all started with a human girl, much like yourself. She loved the king of another clan and our leader swept her off of her feet. The woman was already pregnant and when her and the Castine King were mated, she was filled twice. Almost every first meeting starts children and as the month wore on, it became clear that she was bigger than she should have been. It was then, that she admitted that she had slept with the Black King, Joel.”

Lois was at the edge of her seat, wanting to know what would happen next. The whole world they lived in was amazing to her and the rules that she had lived by did not apply to them in any way.

“So what happened?”

“She burst.”

The smile on her face was gone. Her hand went to her stomach and the idea of it made her a little sick to her stomach.

“A human can barely handle one set of Dragonkin children, certainly not two.”

“Oh my.”

“Well that wasn’t the worst of it. Joel found out that his kin were dead and he blamed Castines for what happened. It was not clear that they were mated and well, it happened. So since we killed the love of his life, even though she chose the Castine family, Joel wouldn’t let it go. Generations later, we still hate each other, though I think most of them do not actually know why. It is quite sad really, but because of that, you will have to go to the mountains. It wouldn’t be the first time the Blacks have tried to take one of our pregnant queens.”

“Oh.” Lois was feeling shaky, the color draining from her face. She felt like she was in danger and the target that she had felt on her back, seemed bigger and brighter than ever. “Do you think I should go there sooner?”

Marline chuckled a little. “No you are fine. Colin will miss you terribly because no men are able to make the trip. Are you ready to leave him?”

Lois nodded that she wasn’t. There was always a catch with the Para world. She could not imagine her life without Colin and the idea of him not being there for the birth of her children upset her more than she was able to show in present company. Lois didn’t want to be without him. Colin made her feel safe in such an unsafe world. He had needed her less and less in the office and it was because of her condition, but to think that she would have to go a month without him was too much! Would she have to do that every time she became pregnant?

“Not every time, just the first time.”

Dammit! She had forgotten that they could read her mind. “Why not every time? I mean the Blacks shouldn’t care which batch it is.”

“They do because the King is always the first born. No matter how many more come after, the first one born will be the next ruler. Imagine having that kind of power? Raising an enemy’s child to hate his very own father. It would be devastating to the clan and we may not be able to get over it. If the present King died before there was a new one, it would be the end of the Castines. The Blacks don’t want to hurt us for their revenge, they want to wipe us off the planet for good.”

“Wow. I know not to mess with you guys. Dragonkin are kind of crazy.”

The older woman laughed melodically. “You can say that again, but what does that say about you dear? You are the one who chose this lifestyle.”
