Chapter One

The New York skyline at dawn hadn’t lost it’s luster for Kevin Leahy. It was his favorite time of day because it meant that the madness was soon to start all over again. He didn’t use his time staring at the sunrise, enjoying the serenity, he thought of how he was going to be more successful than the day before. He was counting dollar signs in his mind. Kevin reclined on a teak chaise, sipping his morning coffee from a white porcelain mug. Miles Davis played throughout his 92nd
th
floor penthouse veranda, which wrapped around his palatial residence (one of them) for 360*. The chime of Juliet’s voice broke through Miles’ trumpet, which pissed him off but it was the price he had to pay.

“Thought I’d find you out here,” Juliet purred. “I would take it personally but I know you by now. Do you know what today is?” Juliet perched herself on Kevin’s lap. She was wearing a green silk robe, which matched the color of her cat-like eyes.

Kevin tugged at the sash on her robe; causing it to fall to the ground. “Enlighten me Juliet. What is so special about today?”

“It’s our anniversary. We had our first date three months ago and we’ve been going strong ever since.” Juliet placed his hand on her breasts. “I think we should do something special to celebrate like dinner, dancing and then, um; whatever come next.”

“The idea sounds fantastic babe but I have dinner plans with Nelson Fuller and his daughter. He’s rarely in town because his home base is in London but he’s here to see Meghan graduate from Columbia. I was lucky to get face-time with the guy; I pretended to give a shit that his little girl is graduating magna cum laude.”

Kevin Leahy, 31 was a man that people noticed when he walked in the room. He learned early on, the importance of appearance. He travelled to Europe twice a year for the express purpose of shopping. He had his suits made by a tailor in London and spent a week in Milan for most everything else including leather goods. His black hair and dark eyes were intense and his physique near perfect. He was 6’1” and his weight lingered around 175 lbs. Kevin toyed with idea of doing something about his nose but as he aged, he came to appreciate it. It wasn’t an Italian nose and at times he was thought to be Jewish. It gave him character and when it was freckled, women thought it was cute.

“I’m disappointed Kevin, but you can make it up to me tonight when you come home. The doorman knows me by now and I’ll be waiting for you.”

Ouch. Juliet had referred to his penthouse as home. He didn’t want to hurt Juliet but three months was his relationship limit. His father was married four times and had warned him of the dangers of allowing a woman to get too close.

“I’m taking the redeye to LA Juliet. I’m not certain when I’ll be back but I’ll be sure to call when I hit the Big Apple again.”

Juliet sighed and led Kevin back into the bedroom leaving both of their robes on the terrace.

Chapter Two

Dinner was scheduled for 7pm at Lenare on 57
th
. As much as Kevin Leahy had learned from his successful father, he also got from his Mother Nancy. She taught him to be on time. To do otherwise was selfish and rude; he barked orders at his driver to navigate Manhattan traffic quickly. Nelson Fuller was on the board of Surrey Bank, which signed Kevin’s paychecks. He was a shrewd businessman who liked to talk shop but above all else he prized his only daughter Meghan. Kevin hit the internet hard as he tried to find details about or even a recent photograph of Meghan. There was very little so he assumed she was not in line to be the next Miss Universe. Meghan was kept hidden for a reason. In his breast pocket, Kevin carried a Montblanc rollerball pen in a leather case for Meghan as a graduation gift. He hoped it would set the tone for great dinner.

“Kevin Leahy. I’m joining Mr. Fuller and his daughter.”

Kevin felt a tug on his elbow. He whipped around to find a stunning woman with red hair and blue twinkling eyes.

“I’m the daughter.” Meghan smiled and offered her hand. “My Dad’s running a bit late. We can wait for him together.”

“Meghan Fuller.” Kevin tried to play it cool. “Kevin Leahy. Happy you’re able to join us.”

“Actually Kevin, I think it’s you who is joining us.” Meghan laughed and Kevin was amused at her sense of humor.

They followed the maître d to their table. Kevin felt something that he hadn’t felt since sixth grade. He had a crush on a little red head, which gave him butterflies. He shook it off and assumed he was nervous because a lot was riding on his relationship with Nelson Fuller.

The server asked Meghan if she wanted something to drink. “Manhattan, up, very dry no fruit.”

“I’ll have the same but with fruit.”

“I don’t drink Manhattans often but it’s dinner with my Dad, which calls for a cocktail.”

Meghan wore a sapphire silk blouse and long black skirt. She looked nothing like the only picture Kevin could uncover. It was when she was much younger with braces and going through an awkward stage.

“Dinner with your father makes you nervous?”

“I just graduated,” Meghan said with her sexy British accent. “He’s expecting me to be ready with plans for the future and I’m not.”

“What was your major?”

“Art history. The Edwardian period mostly. Probably because I grew up with a John Singer Sargent on my wall and as a child, I took many trips to the British Museum. That was my
Disney
and I could spend hours looking at portraits. They were my
Mickey Mouse
and
Snow White.”

Hope I’m not interrupting.” Nelson Fuller appeared.

Meghan popped out of her seat and gave her father a warm embrace. The slit on her skirt revealed her shapely legs and Kevin’s butterflies intensified.

“I’m used to multi-tasking but it’s rare that I mix business with family when they have nothing to do with one another. I had a meeting with you on my mind for a long time Kevin and coming for my pet’s graduation was something I wouldn’t miss.”

“Father, please don’t call me your pet. I hope I mean more to you than Ridley your rat dog.”

“You mean a great deal more Meghan and I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings.” Nelson looked to Kevin. “Do you know that Meghan graduated with honors from Columbia with a degree in art history?”

Kevin took the opportunity to present Meghan with her gift. “You must be very proud Nelson. To celebrate Meghan’s accomplishment I picked up a little something for her.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out the brown leather case.

Meghan opened the gift. “Thanks Kevin. I seem to be amassing quite the collection of fine pens. Something I can’t get enough of.”

Kevin smiled but he wished that he had purchased her something unique. She wasn’t the Montblanc type of girl and a pen was a run of the mill graduation gift. This woman was deserving of something one of a kind that he should have purchased from an out of the way shop in Paris.

“On the business front Kevin, are you happy working from the New York office or have you considered London or even Dubai? Last, I checked you weren’t married or engaged. Those things aren’t supposed to matter and the fact that I’m even bringing it up might create a kerfuffle.”

Kevin laughed. “Don’t worry about me; I know my ability to live wherever, works in my favor. I have travelled abroad so much that it’s like my backyard. I’d relocate if the move was more than just lateral. Is Caulfield looking for someone in London?”

“It’s not something that he’s broadcast yet but he starting to move in that direction. He listens to me so I’ll put in a good word. I wanted to meet so I could see where you’re at. I assume you have a lady waiting for you in every city.”

“That’s crude father.” As Meghan was speaking, she ran her foot up the inside of Kevin’s leg.

Nelson smiled and looked at Kevin. “I’m right aren’t I Kevin.”

“Pretty close Nelson. I keep things light and there’s no trail of broken hearts.” Kevin swallowed hard as Meghan’s toes did a dance on his crotch.

It seemed that Daddy’s girl was not what she seemed. The evening had taken a surprising turn and Kevin didn’t mind the way it was going.

“The two of you are going to have to excuse me while I use the men’s room. We’ll order when I come back and then I want to hear about your post-graduation plans Meghan.”

Meghan smiled nervously because she knew her father wasn’t going to be pleased. Nelson Fuller left leaving Kevin to ask Meghan, what the hell was going on.

“Meghan, first let me say that I’m not complaining. In fact, I’m pleasantly surprised but don’t you think it’s a bit risqué, considering that we’re having dinner with you father?”

“No. It makes these dinners with my father more interesting.”

“You said these dinners. Do you treat all of your dinner guests this way?”

“Not really. Most of them are old enough to be my grandfather. There’s something about you and I’m just having fun.”

“Interested in continuing this without your father after dinner. I can call the hotel across the street and book the penthouse?”

“Not tonight but thanks for the offer Kevin. Here comes my Dad.”

Kevin wasn’t turned down often and it made him want the redhead even more. He was intrigued.

“I hope that didn’t take too long. Now tell me your plans, although I have a good idea that you’ll be coming home to London.”

Before Meghan dropped a bomb on her father, she picked out the cherry from Kevin’s drink. She slipped it between her petulant lips and sucked.

“I’m staying in New York Father. I spoke with the curator of Edwardian art at the British Museum and I was offered a position but I turned it down. I’m going to do some post-graduate work in post-modern expressionism instead.”

Nelson Fuller’s jaw dropped. “It has been the plan for years that you come home. You were groomed since you were a child for a position at the British Museum. I got you into Columbia so you could get the background you needed. This is unacceptable Meghan. Sorry you have to listen to this nonsense Kevin.”

Meghan curled her toes as she was obviously pissed but didn’t want to make a scene. Kevin flinched.

“I guess we learned a lesson Dad. Next time we’ll keep private conversations private. I’m tired so let’s order and we can talk about this tomorrow over breakfast.”

Meghan slipped her shoes back on and the rest of the evening was filled with small talk. Kevin’s infatuation, crush or whatever it was, intensified as the meal progressed. Meghan was forbidden fruit because she was the daughter of a man that had a lot to do with his future. She had also turned him down and she was hot as hell. Her red hair played off her crystal blue eyes and her legs went on forever. To see her again, Kevin would have to be clever; his wheels started turning.

Chapter Three

After dinner, Kevin took a car home to rest before his flight in the morning to LA. He lied to Juliet about taking a redeye because he couldn’t deal with an anniversary celebration. She was a sweet girl but settling down with any woman wasn’t in the cards. He was looking at the next 20 years as a period of earning money and having fun. A family was something he would consider after he was 50.

He sat in his hot tub looking out on the Manhattan skyline. Kevin was also thinking about Meghan Fuller; why she turned him down. Did she have a boyfriend? Was he too close to her father? Too old? He concluded that she was just playing hard to get. He smiled as he thought about it, as women didn’t normally use that tactic on him. Meghan Fuller wasn’t going to get away that easily; he picked up his phone and started dialing. She mentioned the street on which she lived and he narrowed it down to three buildings with excellent security. Nelson Fuller would have insisted on keeping her safe. After some snooping, he learned that NF Holdings of London owned one of the buildings. He called the concierge desk.

“Hello, I’m Kevin Leahy and I just had dinner with Mr. Fuller and his daughter Meghan. I forgot to return something to Ms. Fuller and I’m planning to pop it in the mail. Can you give me her apartment number?”

She laughed. “You know I can’t divulge that information over the telephone Mr. Leahy. Mr. Fuller would fire me immediately if I did.”

“Right, I see. I’ll be talking with Nelson tomorrow; give me your name and I’ll tell Nelson what an outstanding employee you are.”

“Nadine Cooper.”

“Have a great night Nadine.”

Kevin grabbed a towel and dried off; he still had a few hours until his flight left. Kevin had never had to chase a woman before and he was enjoying the effort. He couldn’t believe all the work it took to get a date and he wondered if women had to work as hard to get to him. He approached his loyal doorman on the way out.

“Simon, I need your help with something.” Kevin palmed him a $50, which Simon pocketed without looking at the denomination.

“Anything for you Mr. Leahy.”

“I need you to call one of your fellow door attendant/concierge pals. I assume you guys talk to each other.”

“Yes. We swap stories and such.”

“I’m sure you chat about what assholes your rich bosses can be.”

“Some do but not me Mr. Leahy because you aren’t a jackass like the rest. My only complaint would be that I can’t keep track of your girlfriends.”

“Yeah Simon. I run into the same problem. What I need is for you to call Nadine Cooper at the Princely Building on Koin Street. All you have to do is tell her to let me in and direct me to Meghan Fuller’s unit. Inform her that I’m a good guy and mean no harm. I’ll take care of her.”

“Done. I know Nadine well and she owes me a favor.”

Dressed for his flight, which he would be taking in a few hours, Kevin, was off to chase a woman for the first time. Women were usually satisfied with the size of his wallet but Meghan was already more wealthy than he was.

****

Kevin got out of the car in front of the Princely, which was the nicest building on the block. He expected no less from Fuller who had exquisite taste. He confidently approached the heavy doors with steel handles inlaid with pearl. They opened before him and he walked up to the concierge desk.

“Kevin Leahy.”

“Ms. Fuller is on the eighth floor, Unit B.” She gestured with her hands. “Left when you exit the elevator.” Kevin’s hand met hers and he slipped her a $50.

“Thank you Nadine. Simon sends his regards.” Kevin winked and disappeared in the elevator.

“Hey.” Meghan answered his knock. “I thought I told you that tonight didn’t work for me and how did you get my address?”

“Aren’t you going to invite me in? I got the address and I’m here which is all that really matters.”

“Come in Kevin but don’t get comfortable; you’re not staying.”

“What was that at the restaurant if you’re not interested? I don’t think you’re a tease, which makes this rather confusing.”

Meghan had changed into a pair of yoga pants and a Columbia sweatshirt.

“I’m aware of your position at Surrey and that makes you wildly rich. You’re used to getting what you want, when you want. I’m not one of those women because I don’t care about fancy cars and jewels. I can have anything I desire. It was fun doing something that would piss my father off. I’m at the point in my life where my Dad says black and I say white.”

“Why stop with ramming your foot in my crotch?”

“I stopped there because you seem like a nice guy. I couldn’t use you like that with the intention of sticking it to my dad. He holds your future in his hands.”

“Thanks wow. You’re the first woman that has chosen not to use me. I’ve gotten accustomed to having models and actresses at my beckon call because I have money.”

Meghan smiled. “You don’t seem as if you mind having power over women. I’ve seen you in the tabloids walking the red carpet with some hotties. As much as they use you, you use them right back. Am I correct?”

“I suppose so but I try not to lead anyone on or hurt them. A heart gets broken occasionally but that’s not my fault. Some women just see what they want to see. I try to make it apparent that I’m not the type to have a white picket fence.”

“You’re more the type to have a wrought iron fence coated in gold leaf.”

“Within a gated community,” Kevin joked.

“Or screw fences and just go with a 60 m. yacht.”

“I’d have a fleet.”

“Are you flying out of JFK?”

“I am. Commercial because the private jet, which I own with a group of others is being used. I bought into the thing because I thought it would be convenient but it’s not. It’s not as if I can call up and tell them to fuel the jet. It’s always being used or repaired so I go first-class and it’s just as good.”

Kevin was getting ready to ask Meghan to fly to LA with him. She was just as alluring dressed down as she was dressed up. Her chiming phone foiled his plan.

“I have to grab that because I’m expecting a call.” Meghan pulled her phone out of her purse. “How’d it go?” Pause. “Two encores, not bad. I wish I was there but the Village is hardly the place for my Dad.” Pause. “I’ll let Nadine know and she’ll let you up. See you in 15.” Meghan disconnected.

“Expecting someone? It’s a little late.” Kevin asked.

“My boyfriend sings backup in a band and he’s just finishing up.”

“Is he staying the night?”

“That’s none of your business but yes he is. He lives in Jersey so the trip home at this hour is out of the question. His name is Zig and we’ve been seeing each other for a couple of months.”

Kevin shook his head and smiled. “What pisses your father off most? The fact that he sings backup in a band, lives in Jersey or that his name is Zig? Brilliant move Meghan, if you want to get under your Dad’s skin. Have you gotten his name tattooed on your ass yet?”

“You can leave now Kevin. I remember telling you not to get comfortable and now I want you to go.” Meghan opened the door. “Good luck with your life Kevin and enjoy London if you choose to go there.”

Kevin walked towards the door but before walking out; he pushed Meghan up against the door and kissed her on the mouth.

“Later Meghan. Have fun with Zig.” Kevin said leaving Meghan breathless.

On the way out Kevin took a moment to stop and talk with Nadine who was his new best friend.

“Must be a pain in the ass working the night shift.”

“It has its ups and downs. Did you finish your business with Ms. Fuller?”

“I did, thanks to you Nadine. I appreciate your help but I have one more favor.” Kevin slid another $50 her way. She smiled. “What can you tell me about her friend Zig?”

“He doesn’t compare to you Mr. Leahy. He’s dirty and I’ve seen a cigarette hanging out of his mouth when this is a non-smoking building.”

“The gall!” Kevin smiled. As they were speaking a skinny man with a leather jacket and a beard strolled in. Nadine whispered in his ear that it was Zig. He held Nadine back so she would let him pass with no problem.

Zig walked by Nadine and gave her the peace sign. “Sup Nadine.” He continued to the elevators.

“If it’s Meghan you’re interested in that’s your competition. If ya ask me, a handsome man like you doesn’t have to worry about scum like him. Do you want me to give him a hard time the next time he tries to visit Meghan.”

“No Nadine. I’m good but thanks for keeping your eye out for me.”

Kevin had a car waiting and he had a feeling he would be back to visit Meghan. He certainly wouldn’t have a problem getting in the building. Nadine had a crush on him but she wasn’t quite his type. She was about 50 and easily double his weight. Simon at his building was single, perhaps he could play matchmaker.

“JFK” Kevin sat back and smiled. Never to put all his eggs in one basket, he called ahead to see if Lexi was available. He would at least need a dinner companion while in California.
