‘Really, I don't see what choice I have.'

He raised an eyebrow. ‘You don't?'

‘I have to answer the call,' I said, noisily blowing some air out through my lips.

Something sparkled in Choden's eyes. He smiled and said, ‘Okay, I will wait for it—'

‘I have to answer because,' I said drawing out the word, ‘I still can't afford a phone with caller ID.'

He laughed loudly and linked his arm through mine. ‘Come. Let's walk off into the sunset. Like in the movies.'

‘You do know what I like.'

‘Ms St. James, I cannot tell you how strongly I recommend against this course of action.'

‘I am aware of your concerns.'

‘But I don't think you really appreciate the implications. Your DNA is changing at an alarming rate. We—'

‘The trials will continue.'

‘Please. Ms St. James. You could be doing irreparable harm. Your body cannot—'

‘I said I will be down shortly for my treatment.'

‘Ms St. James. If we could run more tests, perhaps—'

‘Do you like your job at St. James Industries, Doctor? The life it affords your family? Your children? Michael and Kaley, I believe.'

‘I … certainly, I—'

‘Then I will meet you downstairs shortly.'

‘Of course.'

‘Wait. There's one more thing, Doctor.'

‘Yes?'

‘I want my sister brought in.'

‘Ms St. James, again—'

‘Bring her in, Doctor.'

‘But we're not ready to—'

‘Now.'
