“Spoken like a real attorney, dude.” Will tried, unsuccessfully, to stare Jackson down.
“Listen, if my heart isn’t broken by the murders of a bunch of the lowest bastards on the planet, my apologies. But really, I just don’t care.”
Jackson laughed.
“My heart isn’t broken either, Will. I just think tracking down a serial killer sounds a lot more fun and intellectually stimulating to me than pretending to hunt for the answers to questions I already know, that’s all. I think I’m going to follow up on this.”
“Help yourself, bro’,” Will replied as he fired up a smoke, inhaling deeply. “All I can think about right now is La Fiesta and an ice cold Dos Equis amber!”
Will looked at Jackson as he started the car.
So, you know about these flying witch things then, don’t you?”
After a long delay, Jackson answered.
“Yeah. I do.”
“So what are they? I mean, really. I know we can’t use any of your knowledge for work purposes, but I’m curious.”
Will felt a break from the heat at the chilling look in Jackson’s eyes as he answered.
“Will, my brother, some things you’re better off just . . .
not
knowing. Trust me.”
Will stared back at the man, finally turning to face the road again.
“Right. Maybe I don’t want to know after all.”
