April shook her head. “Caleb said we’d go out for dinner tonight and then go shopping.” She stared out into the woods surrounding them. “I wonder if there are any bears out there?”

You wanna go for a walk?” Shoshana asked.

April cocked her head to the side. “Do you feel up to it?”

Yeah, I feel fine now. I’m only sick in the mornings. Let me tell the men where we’re going. I’ll be right back.”

Shoshana walked into the cabin just as Cameron and Caleb erupted in a big cheer as their team scored a touchdown. She waited until they were quiet.

Guys, we’re going for a walk,” she said.

Cameron’s head snapped up. “Where?”

In the woods. We’re going to look for bears.”

He shook his head just as Caleb said, “Huh uh. It’s too easy to get lost.”

We’re grown women. We won’t get lost. We only want to look around awhile.”

No, Shana,” Cameron said. “We’ll go to the trails before we go home, okay?”

The football game came back on television and drew their undivided attention, causing Shoshana to grit her teeth. “What if we don’t go far? We’ll stay around the edges of the woods. Okay?” No answer, so she raised her voice. “Okay?” When still she received no answer she growled in frustration. “Okay.”

Shoshana fairly stomped back out onto the porch and flopped into the porch swing with her arms crossed. “They won’t let us go.”

April’s brows rose. “Why not?”

They said it’s too easy to get lost,” Shoshana said.

Oh please! We’re not stupid.” April sighed and crossed her arms as well. “Then they need to stop watching that ballgame and take us somewhere.”

I told them we would only go around the edge of the woods but they were so into that game they didn’t even answer me.”

That’s a yes as far as I’m concerned,” April said.

Shoshana cocked her head to the side. “Well if we’re only going to the edge of the woods I don’t know why we’d even have to ask, do you?”

April shook her head. “Let’s go.”

Shoshana picked up brightly colored leaves as they walked, selecting only special ones to press in a book and preserve them. She breathed deeply. “I love fall.”

I do, too,” April said. She bent to pick up a bright red leaf from the ground and twirl it around in her hand. “It’s hard to believe Caleb and I are really getting married. This time last year when you and Cameron got married I didn’t think it would ever happen.”

I’m so glad things worked out between you two,” Shoshana said. “Pretty soon you’ll be expecting a baby.”

April’s eyes widened. “I think we’ll wait awhile.”

Oh really?”

Uh huh. See, there’s this thing called birth control. I know your family has never heard of it, but... ”

Shoshana gave her a little shove. “Alright now!”

Shhh!” April said, squinting her eyes to peer into the woods.

Shoshana saw a movement from the corner of her eye and looked intently in that direction to see a small bear cub. “April!” she whispered, grabbing the other girl’s arm. “Look!”

The cub started to move into the woods and the women followed. Shoshana thought it looked just like a teddy bear and ached to hold and cuddle it. It seemed to be in no hurry, stopping every so often to paw around in the leaves.

I wonder where its mother is?” April whispered.

Shoshana looked around. “I hope she’s not nearby.”

April’s eyes widened. “Me either. Maybe we should go back now.”

Yeah,” Shoshana agreed with one last longing glance at the baby bear.

Shoshana looked up into the trees in hopes of seeing another bear as they walked back the way they came. After awhile, however, it became apparent they’d walked much farther on their way back than they had getting there.

April, are you sure this is the way we came?”

April stopped and put a hand to her head. “I thought it was. It... it all seems to look the same out here.”

Shoshana shook her head as her heart picked up in rhythm. “I don’t think we went this far.”

April’s chest rose and fell. “Let’s go back and see if we recognize anything.”

After what seemed like forever Shoshana could have wept in relief to see a lodge nestled in the woods. The air had cooled considerably and her sweater had long since become inadequate. Thankful for the warmth of the lodge, they approached the older lady at the front desk.

We have been lost in the woods,” April explained while Shoshana shivered. “Could you tell us how to get back to the Maple Valley cabins?”

The clerk’s brows rose. “Boy, you wondered quite a ways! Don’t you know better than to hike in these mountains without a guide or trail? People get lost out there and are never heard from again.”

Shoshana felt tears sting the backs of her eyes. “Our husbands are going to be very worried about us. Could you tell us how to get back there?”

Honey, it’s a long ways. Let me holler at my husband and he’ll take you. Do you need to use the phone to call and tell them you’re okay?”

April nodded and Shoshana listened as she explained to Caleb what had happened. The men had been nearly frantic and were on the verge of calling the police before April’s call.

Shoshana’s heart pounded as they got out of the truck. The door to the cabin flew open and Cameron stood framed in the entry. “Caleb! Here they are!”

Caleb’s face peered over Cam’s shoulder. Neither man looked happy.

Thank you so much,” Shoshana said to the man who’d brought them back.

His eyes flicked to the men and back to her. “Good luck. I think you’re gonna need it.”

His knees weak with relief, Cameron watched his little wife walk up the path to the cabin along with his sister, both of their faces pink and their lips chapped.

Go to your rooms!” Caleb barked before he had a chance to say a word.

The women flinched and scattered, April to her room and Shoshana to the one she shared with Cameron.

Cameron slapped his hand against the door facing. “I can’t believe they’d do something so stupid right after we told them not to do it! If Shoshana wasn’t pregnant I’d spank her butt so hard she wouldn’t sit for a week.”

You mean you’re going to let her get away with this just ‘cause she’s pregnant? Man, you’ve got a long nine months ahead of you.”

Cameron spread his hands. “I’m afraid I’ll hurt the baby if spank her. I don’t know what to do.”

Caleb started to walk off the porch. Cameron followed his friend to the edge of the woods where Caleb pulled out a pocket knife and cut two thin switches from a cedar tree, handing one of them to Cameron.

Here’s your solution. It won’t hurt the baby but it’ll teach Shana a lesson.”

Cameron looked at the switch in his hand. “I’ve heard the baby feels everything the mother feels.”

Then I’d say it’s feeling real guilty right now,” Caleb said with raised eyebrows. He started to strip the leaves from his switch and Cameron followed suit.

You’re right.”

When Cameron came into their room with a switch, Shoshana’s head felt faint. She hated a switch with a passion. Her bottom already seemed to twitch and burn.

Take off your skirt and panties,” Cameron told her.

Shoshana’s eyes filled with tears but she did as she was told. “Cameron, please... I’m sorry. We only meant to walk along the edge of the woods and then we saw that baby bear and followed it before we thought. Please don’t spank me.”

Suddenly there came an agonized cry from the other side of the house followed by pitiful screams that caused Shoshana’s tears to overflow. Heart pounding, she backed away from her husband in denial of what she knew was about to happen.

No! Please... no, Cameron!” Her voice rose to a squeal just as Cameron grabbed her arm and started to thrash her bare bottom with the switch. Dancing and wiggling about, all she could do was scream in agony as the limb wrapped around her bottom and thighs again and again, leaving streaks of fire in its wake. Cameron chased her around and around in circles, holding her upright with the hand on her arm while she fought frantically to remove her hind end from the unbearable pain.

When he finally stopped Shoshana collapsed to her knees on the carpet, her bottom burning so badly she thought it would never end. Cameron raised her to her feet and held her while she bounced up and down at the knees and cried in agony until the burning lessened to somewhere near bearable.

I’m sorry I disobeyed you,” she sobbed against his chest. “I should have listened to you. I’m so sorry.”

She felt his chest go up and down and he pulled her closer. “You scared me to death. I was afraid I’d lost you.”

I’m sorry,” she cried again, peering up into his face. “Please don’t be mad at me anymore.”

He kissed her upturned lips. “I’m not mad at you. I’m too happy to have you back safe to be mad at you. But if you ever even think about doing something like this again... ”

Shoshana put a finger to his lips. “I won’t.”

Cameron growled and pretended to bite her neck, causing her to squeal. “If it’s a bear you want... ”

EPILOGUE

Shoshana grabbed Cameron’s hand and placed it on her stomach just as the little one kicked. His eyes widened and he laughed out loud. “I felt it!” His face showing awe, he palmed her abdomen again.

Cameron’s mom moved tentatively to Shoshana’s side, her face fixed in a anxious smile. “May I feel?”

Of course,” Shoshana said, surprised. She guided the older woman’s hand over her abdomen where the baby had most recently kicked.

April came over to put a hand on her abdomen as well.

How do you feel?” Shoshana asked her pale sister-in-law.

Horrible,” April said, smiling up at Caleb as he placed an arm around her shoulders. “But Caleb is taking good care of me. He even did the dishes tonight.”

Oh, how sweet,” Cameron said in a mock-female voice, causing Caleb to roll his eyes.

You’re just mad ‘cause it makes you look bad,” he said. “Maybe you oughta try it yourself. Makes a happy wife.” He wriggled his eyebrows at April. “I like a happy wife.”

You’re the copycat, not me,” Cameron said. “I get married, you get married. I make a baby, you make a baby. I become a partner with dad, you become a partner... ”

That’s enough Cameron,” his mother cut in. “Caleb, I think it’s very sweet you did the dishes for April. Those first three months of pregnancy are awful, but I have to say I’m so excited about my two new grandbabies.”

ABSOLUTELY NOT!”

All eyes turned at the sound of Ben Jamison’s booming voice to see Rona walking slowly down the stairs, her face set in rebellion. Shoshana couldn’t suppress a gasp when she laid eyes on her young sister-in-law’s dress since there seemed to be so little of it. Cut way low, its halter top was barely enough to cover her ample breasts, and its hem rode just below her butt cheeks. Add that to the fact that it was skin-tight and Shoshana blushed just to look at her.

Delores removed her hand from Shoshana’s abdomen and straightened, her hand covering her mouth. “Rona... I don’t think that dress is appropriate to wear in front of your father’s employees.”

This is what I bought to wear! What am I supposed to wear tonight?”

Delores pointed up the stairs. “You have more dresses. Now go and change. Our guests will start to arrive in a half hour.”

Rona stomped her foot. “No! I am not going to change. I am eighteen years old. I can wear whatever I want!”

I don’t care how old you get. As long as you live in my house you’ll do as I say,” Cameron’s dad fairly shouted. “Now get upstairs and change!”

NO!” Rona shouted back.

Ben’s eyes met his wife’s before he took his daughter’s arm and half-dragged her up the stairs despite her cursing and screeching. Delores sat in a chair and put her face in her hands. Caleb’s brows lowered and his eyes met Shoshana’s. In their father’s household the girl would have been laboring under a belt from the first moment she questioned her father’s order.
