“I told you, your mom is going to flip when you tell her.” Auntie Meme was right. The night after the arrest with Dan, I told Mom that Mick and I were no longer “dating.” She ended up preparing my favorite meal in a celebration dinner.
“What Mom doesn’t know,” I said, realizing I was going to have to keep the worlds separate a little bit longer than I had initially planned.
I went back out to the diner and cleaned a few tables.
“Take a seat!” I yelled when the bell over the door dinged, but about fell over when I saw Mrs. Hubbard mosey up to the counter stool open next to Mick.
“Mrs. Hubbard.” I smiled, looking at the blue ribbon pinned on her yellow cardigan and Mystic Couture pink rouge on her balled up cheeks. “I see you got the blue.”
“Not the first place blue. That obviously went to your mom.” She tapped the ribbon. “I got honorable mention. No one has ever had a beautiful plastic garden on Belgravia Court.” The twinkle in her eyes told me of how proud she was. “I’ll have the special I hear so much about.”
“The special for Mrs. Hubbard,” I hollered through the pass through at Auntie Meme.
“What?” Auntie Meme turned, the light on her face said it all. I had just given her free will to put any potion in the special for Mrs. Hubbard. I cringed to think what she’d pick.
Mick and Burt looked like they were finished eating.
“That was delicious, Maggie.” Burt wiped his mouth on the napkin and stuck it on the plate.
“I guess I’ll be seeing you soon.” Mick’s eyes danced over me. “I guess having you around isn’t going to be so bad.”
“What’s with the change of heart?” Burt looked at him sideways.
“I don’t know.” Mick shrugged and paid their bill before they headed out the door.
I glanced over at the pass through where Auntie Meme was watching Mick and Burt leave the diner. When the door shut, she looked at me and winked.
“Special for the counter up!” Auntie Meme screamed with a little up swing on the
up.
I grabbed the plate of beans and cornbread looking at Auntie Meme. She gave a theatrical wink. I put the hot plate in front of Mrs. Hubbard and told her to enjoy.
Immediately the bell dinged again. I glanced back hoping it was Mick. It wasn’t. It was Lilith sashaying her way around the tables, saying hello to the regulars and explaining where she had been working.
“Are you ready?” she asked, plopping down at the counter.
It had been long couple weeks since Lilith had started working at Mystic Couture. She had been spending all her time at the office with Tessa learning the in’s and out’s of the company. It was strange not seeing her around the brownstone as much. We kept different hours and today we made a sister date to hang out at The Derby.
“Abram should be here any minute,” I said over my shoulder while making a fresh pot of coffee to hold the rest of the lunch crowd over.
I had begged Mom to go on a date with Ronnie so he would let Abram off for the afternoon. It turned out the date wasn’t so bad. He had taken her to Jeff Ruby’s, wining and dining her all night. In fact, they had a follow up date next weekend, so I guess I didn’t have to beg too much.
“Did I just see Mick here?” Abram asked when he walked through the door of the diner.
“You did.” I nodded, taking my apron off and hanging it up on the hook. I retrieved my clutch from underneath the counter. “He just came for the special.” I didn’t mind keeping my little secret deep inside me.
Vinnie pulled up in front of the diner to pick Lilith and me up to take us to The Derby.
“Let’s make this time at the bar a lot less eventful,” I said as Vinnie’s tires squealed from underneath us.
