“Speaking of good guys, you’ve had a call from a certain doctor friend in El Salvador. He was disappointed to hear you’d gone home.”
“Oh no, he must think I’ve left him for good.”
“Don’t worry, I told him you were coming back as soon as possible. And I didn’t tell him anything except that there’d been a family emergency. I hope I was right, you are coming back, aren’t you?”
“Of course. Did Enrique say when he was going to be in San Jose?”
“He said he’d stop by next week, on his way back to Santa Clara. So I guess you have a little time to visit with your family until he arrives.”
“No, I think my family has seen quite enough of me for awhile. But I need to spend a few days in San Jose to take care of some business. I hope Freddy has a room.”
“I’m sure Freddy has a room,” Nellie said. “I guess I’m being kind of nosy, but what business do you have here?”
“I’m applying for medical school at the University of Costa Rica. I’m hoping to have everything arranged before I see Enrique.”
“You’re going to med school? Will you need a job? You know you always have one here.”
“I think I’ll have enough money for awhile,” Julie said. “And any spare time I have, I’m planning to spend up in Santa Clara. If Enrique should happen to come by before I get there, tell him to wait for me.”
Nellie laughed. “Honey, if that guy shows up here, I’ll hog tie him before I’ll let him get away. I’m dying to meet him, and I want to see that look on your face again.”
“What look?”
“The look you had the day you came back from the mountains, right before I showed you the pendant. You were glowing all over; I’d never seen you so happy.”
Julie thought back to the moment she had kissed Enrique at the airport as he was leaving for San Salvador, and the way she’d felt after leaving the cathedral. “That was the day when I knew I’d fallen in love,” she said.
“Oh, wow. You better think about this. Me, I didn’t have a choice, nothing to lose, when I came down here. But you’ll be leaving home.”
“Home?” Julie smiled to herself, remembering Enrique’s warm embrace. “Don’t you know, Nellie? Home is where the heart is.”
