MacArthur was his regiment's adjutant and its fourth color-bearer; the first had been shot, the second bayoneted, and the third decapitated. As MacArthur's famous son, Douglas MacArthur, told the (probably apocryphal) story decades later, Sheridan flung his arms around Arthur when he learned of his feat and told his comrades, “Take care of him.
