“As of right now, I don’t see why we have to ever return, and I know we don’t have to think about it,” he offered.
“The worst of that time, when you were in that warehouse, was our connection. I mean, it was the best of it, too, to know you were alive, but to feel how badly you suffered... Of course, how can I say that when you were the one actually suffering?”
“We both suffered, greatly,” he responded, his voice deep, each word clipped.
“I have never been so afraid in my life. I had this uncontrolled weapon inside me as we moved through dark rooms, and those stairs, ahh, and I am so afraid of heights. And it only got much, much worse from there. The stairs were the least of it, seeing wolves and vampires tear into each other just inches from me. I don’t even like sports. I knew the bad guy, what they’d done, and yet, though my brain knew who to root for, my heart couldn’t handle it.”
I stopped for a minute, wiping away the tears that had already begun to fall. I let my head fall back until our cheeks semi-met, taking in the earthy smell of his skin as exaggerated by the little sweat he’d worked up on our walk. I heard and felt him sniff me, as well. We wiggled our bodies, and settled into each other more as we just stared out on the beauty before us, though our minds were both in very dark places.
“When I finally got to that top floor,” I continued after a few moments of letting my mind go, unable to stop all of those horrible images from retuning, “seeing you there, with him, him threatening you, what was it like before I got there?” I cried out.
“I can’t talk about what happened to me yet. I did my best last night to give Catherine and Edward some information on Vivian and Riker, as I felt they needed it, but as for what happened to me, it wasn’t so much the torture, but the thoughts of never seeing you again that… I’m sorry, I just can’t yet.”
When I looked back at him, a tear had fallen over his cheek. Seeing a man cry even on TV had always been my undoing. I turned in his arms, coming up on my knees to face him. I kissed away his salty tear before I granted him butterfly kisses all over his face. Hints of a smile gave way, and while that touched me, my own plight from that night hit me, and continued to nag at my guilt.
“Lex. Listen. I did something bad that night. And, while I’ve tried to move past it, I just can’t. I let that man... oh, I forget what you called him, but the true werewolf in the black suit, I let him go. I couldn’t kill him. What will everyone think of me? You are all such warriors…”
“Shhh, Christina,” he said, kissing the side of my temple. “I know. And, I still could not love you any more than I do. You are a fighter. Brave. You have taken on so much. But, you are not a killer. There is a difference. It is who you are, someone unable to take a life.”
“I felt I could, though. When he was hurting you, I felt I could kill him. But, once he jumped out that window, was not threatening you anymore, then I could no longer do it.”
“Everyone will understand,” he soothed. “It is you who needs to begin to. Everything about this life is new to you. You will find your place in it and hopefully begin to cut yourself a little slack.”
He took my face in his hands then, and pressed his lips to mine for a gentle, lingering kiss, before he pulled back enough to say, “Follow me.”
We took off on a light run along another path. We stopped when we got to a spot of water with stone caves around it. A tiny patch of beach existed between the tree line and the water, maybe ten feet by ten feet if we were lucky. With the stones jutting out on both sides, it seemed to be a tiny tropical paradise.
“Nobody really comes here. The sand is only visible during low tide anyway. I discovered it when I was here and needed to get away, be alone with my thoughts. I have to have you, Christina. If anyone comes, I will hear them in plenty of time.”
When I nodded, his mouth fell to mine again. As his tongue stroked across the seam of my lips, I allowed him in. And, as his hands made short work of undressing us both, I let him. The wind picked up over the water, and sent a shiver through me as it hit my skin. As he came closer, pressing his hard body against mine, kissing my neck, I looked out through heavy lidded eyes at the waves crashing against the shore.
Not only were they the perfect background noise, added to the songs of the birds, but the perfect backdrop to his naked body. This moment, especially as he moved down to take an already hard nipple into his mouth, was perfect, his ass against the ocean as I looked down over him. I only hoped this moment was the start of a perfect ever after for us, as well.
He stopped, and stepped back. “Are you okay?”
“Yes. I’m more than okay. Just marveling at the perfection of this moment; to be with you here, in these surrounding, so beautiful, the sounds of nature, nothing could be more wonderful. Sadly, I got distracted in the wonder of it all.”
“No apologies. Not between us. You look amazing standing here. I wish I could take a picture, but I shall tuck one away in my memory.”
“Me, too,” I whispered, moving up on my tiptoes, pressing my body fully against his to kiss him.
“I love you, Christina,” he said, “now, lay back, I’ve made a little bed out of our clothing. We’ll shake it out afterwards.”
I did just as he requested, surprised at how comfortable this man made me with my full-figured body. He saw me as so sexy that I couldn’t help but to think the same way, for the first time in my life, about myself. He’d changed everything, and not just my powers and job and location, but my heart, my self-perception, and the way I viewed the world.
Coming down on his knees, he paused to look at me, where my wet folds lay open before him. Shaking his head with that grin of his, he poised his erection at my entrance, which pulsed to have him yet again. Making up for lost time, I supposed.
“I don’t have any protection,” he said, looking distraught.
“It’s okay. It isn’t a time we have to worry. Besides, in this setting, I’d like to feel you, your skin against mine, all natural.” We both barely breathed as he pushed into me. The heat, the feel of him... it was surreal, just like this place, this moment.
If I stayed there forever, I didn’t think that any of this could ever become familiar, or lose its wonder. He made love to me, slowly, passionately until my toes curled into the sand, us coming together in perfect unison with each other, and with the universe, each lapping wave matching each of our contractions.
Chapter Twenty One
When we arrived back at the castle just before dinner, we were instructed not to change, that dinner was an informal grab-and-go sandwich affair so that Catherine and I could begin our training. Since no one had been in the dining hall sort of place where we’d eaten lunch, Lex and I had grabbed plate-fulls, which were nothing even close to the ham and cheese sandwich nights when I was growing up, and then we headed to the front sitting room to eat.
After I’d had my fill of some fish salad sandwich and vegetables and fruit, I was summoned to, of all places, a ballroom. With me looking bewildered, Lex stood and pulled me to my feet.
“Come on, I’ll walk you there,” he offered as I shuffled along after him.
I wasn’t dressed for a ball, in basically sand-free shorts and top, so I had no idea what to expect once I got there. We went down a hall on the lower floor that I’d never been down before, just past what looked to be a music room for entertaining, maybe about thirty guests comfortably.
At the door to the ballroom, Lex gave me a tight, long embrace as far as hugs go, followed by a heart-stopping kiss that made me come close to losing my mind.
“Thanks, but I didn’t need that distraction,” I huffed as the servant patiently waited through our goodbye with his hand on the large door handle of one of the double doors.
Lex laughed out loud before he replied, “It was not for distraction, but to get that magic inside of you pumping.”
“Ah, in that case, thanks, I think. Your kisses are double-edged swords; no, wait, those are both bad things... I was meaning two sides of good, like a candle that burns at both ends, but no, that isn’t right either… oh, see what you do to me? I can’t think.”
“You will be fine. Don’t worry. Once you get in there, you will feel comfortable, energetic to say the least, and learn all about this magic of yours. Now, have fun, but don’t overdo it. I will be waiting in the bedroom to give you a massage that will hopefully lead to other things after you tell me all about it.”
“I love you. Don’t know what I would do without you, Lex,” I sighed with a smile.
“I love you, too. Now, go get ‘em.”
I furrowed my brow at him, talking to me as if I were going in to play a baseball game or something instead of learning about this magic inside of me, being tested by the Royals. When I nodded to the servant, he opened the doors. I felt Lex walk away, but couldn’t look back and watch it happen. As I stepped into a room with white walls with ornate wood trims scrolled all over them, I saw Catherine and Edward, only standing in the middle of the room and waiting. Apparently all of the furniture had been cleared out. The room had a nice wooden dance floor in the middle, with carpet surrounding it, I guessed for chairs and tables if they were actually having a ball. They’d even pulled the long, burgundy velvet drapes closed. There would be no distractions, and nothing to hurt, I guessed.
“So, are you ready?” Catherine asked, smiling at me as I stopped several feet from her after hearing the large wooden door being closed.
Excitement pumped through me, like my magic being in here with them, as if my magic were not just in me, but all around me. It was a viable thing in the room that moved between us. The air literally sparkled, like someone had suddenly shaken a snow globe full of glitter that was actually fireflies, or maybe fairies, I mused.
“Absolutely,” I replied, meaning it.
