Staniloae, Dumitru
(1903–93).
Romanian Orthodox theologian and guide to the Church during decades of political turmoil—leading to his book on Church-State relations in the particular setting of Romania. He became editor of a church paper, and then moved in 1949 to Bucharest. He began his long task of translating the
Philocalia
, which was interrupted when he was arrested, in 1958, during a clamp-down on the Orthodox Church. He was pardoned in 1964, and continued his work in Bucharest until his retirement in 1973.
Stanis
aw, St
or Stanislaus, St
(1030–79).
Patron
saint
of Poland. As
bishop
of Cracow he came into conflict with King Boles
aw II and was put to death. Stanis
aw was implicated in a plot to oust the king in favour of his brother, and his execution was ordered, with whatever admixture of other motives, for treason. His remains were buried under the main altar of Cracow cathedral in 1088, and he was canonized in 1253. Feast day, 11 Apr.
