German Jewish poet and philosopher, Steinheim argued that religious
revelation
is of its very nature non-rational. He alienated the advocates of
Reform Judaism
by his supra-naturalism, and the
Orthodox
by not identifying revelation with the Jewish holy books. His major work was
Die Offenbarung nachdem Lehrbegriffe der Synagoge
(4 vols.), but it had little influence on his contemporaries. He is now regarded as a forerunner of existentialism.
