From the ‘
Journal of Science Tomorrow
,’ December:

In what is being described as the most groundbreaking, if not controversial story of the century, the scientists who created the much-talked-about
Lucy
, or the Frequency Responding Lucid Transmitter, are set to give a press conference later this week.

The machine that goes by the casual name ‘Lucy’ made international headlines last week when lead scientist, Dr. Charles Egan, made his announcement to the world that yes, they have created a machine capable of reading and mapping out thoughts and images created during a person’s sleep cycle in great detail. No further statements were provided to explain how the machine operates.

In response to these claims, human rights activists from around the globe have raised their voices in protest, stating that the machine is in direct violation of personal rights and privacy. Eugene Rhymes, a spokesperson for
Empowering Rights
, issued the following statement:

“A person’s thoughts—their dreams—are a personal matter. They do not belong to a room full of scientists and government officials. One’s mind is private, and should remain that way. How do we know the government will not use this machine to read people’s thoughts while they are awake? If they have the technology to monitor a dream, then they have the technology to read thoughts, and that is the beginning of a true police state. A person’s mind deserves the freedom to remain private.”

Empowering Rights
is just one of the many groups threatening to sue Kalispell Industries if Lucy is made available to the public.

In a response, lead scientist Dr. Charles Egan made this comment: “We anticipated there would be a share of negative response to Lucy. Our objective has never been to read anyone’s minds, or unwillingly monitor their thoughts. The positive scientific ramifications of this device are astounding. In a clinical setting, Lucy will be used to help cure a plethora of mental disorders, the list of which only time will tell. In a private setting, Lucy will give a person the ability to witness his or her own dreams firsthand. I truly believe this device will enhance our understanding of our very selves, and lead us into a new age of awareness. Lucy is essentially the thing dreams are made of.”

Lucy was funded in private by Kalispell Industries, which has met harsh scrutiny from local and city officials, along with the scientific community at large, regarding the secretive manner in which they conducted their research, leading many to believe there might have been some unethical practices during the device’s development.

In response to these claims, Kalispell Industries spokesperson, Iain Marcus, was quoted as saying; “I assure the general public that no laws were broken during any stage of development and research. It has been a long, hard road for our scientists, but at no point did we not comply with local and statewide regulations and laws. Our records are immaculate.”

The president and CEO of Kalispell Industries, Mr. Timothy Kalispell, gave this short statement via email when asked to answer questions pertaining to any unethical proceedings, “I have the best—the smartest—group of scientists, lawyers, and advisors working around the clock on this project. Their hard work and dedication should be praised, not scrutinized. I have complete faith in my employees to answer all questions during the press conference.”

The press conference is scheduled Friday at 4 P.M.

We’ll be bringing you all the news and updates as they happen live.
