‘I can be based anywhere. If you want to stay in London, we’ll stay here. Or we can live in Rome. Vienna. Even Timbuktu!’ He kissed her. ‘It doesn’t matter where we live, as long as we’re together. You were absolutely right. It doesn’t matter whether we live in a broom cupboard in London or half the top floor of a posh hotel in Rome. It’s being together that matters. You’ve taught me that and I’ll never, ever forget it.’
He meant it. She knew he meant every single word.
And she also knew that she could trust him, and he’d never let her down. ‘You’ve taught me a lot, too. You’ve made me see that not all men are liars. Well, I knew they weren’t, but you know what I mean. You’ve taught me that it’s safe to rely on you, because you’ll never let me down.’
He slipped the ring onto the third finger of her left
hand. ‘And there’s a lot we’ve still got to learn. But we’ll get there, because we’ll be learning together.’
‘Together,’ she echoed with a smile.
And she knew that, as long as they had each other, everything was going to work out just fine.
