“It will kill, if it is not removed from the body. We cannot heal around silver.”
“Do it again.”
“Pardon?”
“Change into the wolf again, please.”
“Anything you wish.” Adam took a deep breath and within a few seconds the pale wolf stood before her. She reached out a shaky hand and buried it in the fur of Adam’s coat. He was warm and incredibly soft. Adam made a yipping sound before shaking and transforming once again.
“Does it pain you?”
“The first time did, but now I feel nothing. In fact, it is pleasurable now.”
“That would explain the bite mark.” Isabelle removed the scarf from her throat and Adam stared at the bite mark he had left on her throat a few nights ago. The bite mark was not shaped like a human bite and confused her for many days.
“I am dreadfully sorry. I must admit something to you also, Isabelle.”
“What is it?”
“The bite mark is not going to disappear. I claimed you as my own.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I have linked myself to you. You will live as long as I do. If you were to ever touch another man intimately, my wolf would smell it on you and could cause damage.”
“So you linked me to you for life without my permission?”
“I am awfully sorry, I did not mean to. Are you angry at me?”
Isabelle realized she was still touching Adam and yanked her hand away before standing up and brushing the skirt of her dress down. She wasn’t angry, but she was just upset that Adam hadn’t told her about his secret and how they were bonded for life. Also, there was the unfortunate fact that she was unable to have him.
“I am not angry. How are we to be together, Adam?”
“I will figure a way, Isabelle.”
“My father does not allow it.”
“Then, we shall run away. My family will accept you. They have been waiting all my life for me to find my mate.”
She pondered the idea. She wasn’t really that happy at home. Her father demanded that she did everything properly. He controlled the way she wore her hair, the clothes she wore, and the men she was to be with. She needed her freedom and she had that with Adam.
“I will tell my father immediately.”
“Make sure you are making the right decision before you choose, Isabelle.”
“I choose you, Adam,” Isabelle whispered before gently kissing him. He rubbed the grass from his body before they walked hand-in-hand to the garden to retrieve Adam’s clothes and face her father. She was certain this was the best decision she had made in a while.
“I need to speak to my father,” Isabelle informed the servant standing outside her father’s study. She waited a few moments before she and Adam entered the small room.
“How can I help you, Isabelle?”
“I am here to inform you that I am leaving with Adam and you cannot stop me.”
“I feared this would happen. How do you know his family will accept you?”
“My family will accept Isabelle because I love her and that is good enough for them. They do not care about how high of birth she is.”
“I do not care of your low birth. I did not allow you to court my daughter because I did not deem you good enough for her.” Her father slammed his hand on the wooden desk as he stood up, a frown on his wrinkled face.
“I am sorry, but this is how it is to be. I either leave with Adam as soon as possible or you accept our relationship.”
“Isabelle, I cannot have you-“
“I am sick and tired of being treated like I do not have a choice. This is my decision and you are to choose now whether I either leave with Adam or whether you accept us. There is no third choice.”
“You have grown up beautifully, Isabelle.” Her father smiled and Isabelle frowned at him as he rounded the table and cupped her face in his hands.
“Pardon?”
“Your mother knew you were going to be a fighter. She just said you had to find the right thing to be passionate about. If Adam is what you are passionate about, then I accept your relations.”
“Father?”
“I do not want to lose my daughter over a man, Isabelle.”
“Thank you ever so much, Father,” said Isabelle, as she threw her arms around her father’s shoulders and squeezed him tightly. Her father stepped back and held his hand out to Adam who shook his hand strong.
“You hurt my daughter and you will be facing me, understand, Count?”
“I understand, Lord Royce.”
“Now leave.”
The couple left the study hand in hand before heading into the garden together. Adam turned to her, once they were outside, with a smile on his face. “Happy birthday, Isabelle.”
She knew that this was the best present that her father could have ever given her.
