Luke 20:1-26

1
 And it came to pass,
that
on one of those days, as he [Jesus] taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon
him
with the elders,
2
and spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

3
And he answered and said unto them,
I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
4

the baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

5
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
6
But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
7
And they answered, that they could not tell whence
it was.

8
 And Jesus said unto them,
Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

9
 Then began he to speak to the people this parable;
A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
10

And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent
him
away empty.
11

And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated
him
shamefully, and sent
him
away empty.
12

And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast
him
out.

13

Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence
him
when they see him.

14

But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
15

So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed
him.

What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?
16

He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others.

And when they heard
it,
they said, God forbid.

17
And he beheld them, and said,
What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
18

Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19
And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

20
 And they watched
him,
and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
21
And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person
of any,
but teachest the way of God truly:
22
is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

23
But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,
Why tempt ye me?
24

Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it?

They answered and said, Caesar's.

25

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
26
And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

Psalm 89:1-13

Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

1
I will sing of the mercies of the L
ORD
for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

2
For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.

3
I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

4
Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

5
And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O L
ORD
: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.

6
For who in the heaven can be compared unto the L
ORD
?
who
among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the L
ORD
?

7
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all
them that are
about him.

8
 O L
ORD
God of hosts, who
is
a strong L
ORD
like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

9
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

10
Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

11
 The heavens
are
thine, the earth also
is
thine:
as for
the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

12
The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

13
Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand,
and
high is thy right hand.

Proverbs 13:15-16

15
Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors
is
hard.

16
 Every prudent
man
dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open
his
folly.

Joshua 22:21–23:16

21
Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,
22
 The L
ORD
God of gods, the L
ORD
God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if
it be
in rebellion, or if in transgression against the L
ORD
, (save us not this day,)
23
that we have built us an altar to turn from following the L
ORD
, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the L
ORD
himself require
it;
24
 and if we have not
rather
done it for fear of
this
thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the L
ORD
God of Israel?
25
 For the L
ORD
hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the L
ORD
: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the L
ORD
.
26
Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:
27
 but
that
it
may be
a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the L
ORD
before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the L
ORD
.
28
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should
so
say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say
again,
Behold the pattern of the altar of the L
ORD
, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it
is
a witness between us and you.
29
God forbid that we should rebel against the L
ORD
, and turn this day from following the L
ORD
, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the L
ORD
our God that
is
before his tabernacle.

30
And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which
were
with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.
31
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the L
ORD
is
among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the L
ORD
: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the L
ORD
.

32
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
33
And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

34
And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar
Ed:
for it
shall be
a witness between us that the L
ORD
is
God.

23:
1
And it came to pass a long time after that the L
ORD
had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old
and
stricken in age.
2
And Joshua called for all Israel,
and
for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old
and
stricken in age:
3
and ye have seen all that the L
ORD
your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the L
ORD
your God
is
he that hath fought for you.
4
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
5
 And the L
ORD
your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the L
ORD
your God hath promised unto you.
6
Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom
to
the right hand or
to
the left;
7
that ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear
by them,
neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:
8
 but cleave unto the L
ORD
your God, as ye have done unto this day.
9
 For the L
ORD
hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but
as for
you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
10
One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the L
ORD
your God, he
it is
that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
11
Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the L
ORD
your God.
12
Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations,
even
these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
13
know for a certainty that the L
ORD
your God will no more drive out
any of
these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the L
ORD
your God hath given you.

14
 And, behold, this day I
am
going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the L
ORD
your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you,
and
not one thing hath failed thereof.
15
Therefore it shall come to pass,
that
as all good things are come upon you, which the L
ORD
your God promised you; so shall the L
ORD
bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the L
ORD
your God hath given you.
16
When ye have transgressed the covenant of the L
ORD
your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the L
ORD
be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
