23
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also
his
coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24
They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the
wife
of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother,
Woman, behold thy son!
27
Then saith he to the disciple,
Behold thy mother!
And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own
home.
28
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith,
I thirst.
29
Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put
it
upon hyssop, and put
it
to his mouth.
30
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,
It is finished:
and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
31
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and
that
they might be taken away.
32
Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33
But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34
but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35
 And he that saw
it
bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36
For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37
And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
38
And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave
him
leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
39
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound
weight.
40
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42
There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation
day;
for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

 Thy testimonies
are
wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.
130
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
131
I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.
132
Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.
133
Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
134
Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.
135
Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.
136
Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.
137
 Righteous
art
thou, O L
ORD
, and upright
are
thy judgments.
138
 Thy testimonies
that
thou hast commanded
are
righteous and very faithful.
139
My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.
140
 Thy word
is
very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.
141
 I
am
small and despised:
yet
do not I forget thy precepts.
142
 Thy righteousness
is
an everlasting righteousness, and thy law
is
the truth.
143
Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me:
yet
thy commandments
are
my delights.
144
 The righteousness of thy testimonies
is
everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.
145
 I cried with
my
whole heart; hear me, O L
ORD
: I will keep thy statutes.
146
I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.
147
I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.
148
 Mine eyes prevent the
night
watches, that I might meditate in thy word.
149
Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O L
ORD
, quicken me according to thy judgment.
150
They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law.
151
 Thou
art
near, O L
ORD
; and all thy commandments
are
truth.
152
Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.

It is
an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.
13
 Righteous lips
are
the delight of kings; and they love him that speaketh right.

1
And David numbered the people that
were
with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
2
And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3
But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now
thou art
worth ten thousand of us: therefore now
it is
better that thou succour us out of the city.
4
And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
5
And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying,
Deal
gently for my sake with the young man,
even
with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
6
 So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim;
7
where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand
men.
8
For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9
And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that
was
under him went away.
10
 And a certain man saw
it,
and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak.
11
And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest
him,
and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? And I would have given thee ten
shekels
of silver, and a girdle.
12
And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand
shekels
of silver in mine hand,
yet
would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none
touch
the young man Absalom.
13
Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against
me.
14
Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he
was
yet alive in the midst of the oak.
15
And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
16
And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
17
And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
18
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which
is
in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.
19
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the L
ORD
hath avenged him of his enemies.
20
And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.
21
Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
22
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi.
And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?
23
 But howsoever,
said he,
let me run.
And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.
24
And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
25
And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he
be
alone,
there is
tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
26
And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold
another
man running alone.
And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
27
And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.
And the king said, He
is
a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
28
And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed
be
the L
ORD
thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29
And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe?
And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, and
me
thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what
it was.
30
 And the king said
unto him,
Turn aside,
and
stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
31
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the L
ORD
hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
32
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe?
And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do
thee
hurt, be as
that
young man
is.
33
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
19:
1
And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.
2
And the victory that day was
turned
into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.
3
And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.
4
But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!
5
 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
6
in that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
7
Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the L
ORD
, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.
8
Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.
9
And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.
10
And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?
