Acts 28:1-31

1
And when they [Paul and the ship's crew] were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
2
And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
3
And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid
them
on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
4
And when the barbarians saw the
venomous
beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
5
And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
6
Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

7
In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
8
And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
9
So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:
10
who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded
us
with such things as were necessary.

11
And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
12
And landing at Syracuse, we tarried
there
three days.
13
And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
14
where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

15
And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The Three Taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
16
And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

17
And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men
and
brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
18
Who, when they had examined me, would have let
me
go, because there was no cause of death in me.
19
But when the Jews spake against
it,
I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had aught to accuse my nation of.
20
For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see
you,
and to speak with
you:
because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

21
And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
22
But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

23
And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into
his
lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and
out of
the prophets, from morning till evening.
24
And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
25
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
26
saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
27
for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with
their
eyes, and hear with
their
ears, and understand with
their
heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
28
Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and
that
they will hear it.
29
And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

30
And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
31
preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

Psalm 9:1-12

To the chief Musician upon Muth-labben, A Psalm of David.

1
 I will praise
thee,
O L
ORD
, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.

2
I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.

3
When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.

4
For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right.

5
Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

6
O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them.

7
 But the L
ORD
shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment.

8
And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

9
 The L
ORD
also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

10
And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, L
ORD
, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

11
 Sing praises to the L
ORD
, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.

12
When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

Proverbs 19:1-3

1
 Better
is
the poor that walketh in his integrity, than
he that is
perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

2
 Also,
that
the soul
be
without knowledge,
it is
not good; and he that hasteth with
his
feet sinneth.

3
The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the L
ORD
.

1 Chronicles 12:19–14:17

19
 And there fell
some
of Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to
the jeopardy of
our heads.
20
As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that
were
of Manasseh.
21
And they helped David against the band
of the rovers:
for they
were
all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.
22
 For at
that
time day by day there came to David to help him, until
it was
a great host, like the host of God.

23
 And these
are
the numbers of the bands
that were
ready armed to the war,
and
came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the L
ORD
.
24
The children of Judah that bare shield and spear
were
six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war.
25
Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred.
26
Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred.
27
 And Jehoiada
was
the leader of the Aaronites, and with him
were
three thousand and seven hundred;
28
and Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his father's house twenty and two captains.
29
And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.
30
And of the children of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their fathers.
31
And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come and make David king.
32
And of the children of Issachar,
which were men
that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them
were
two hundred; and all their brethren
were
at their commandment.
33
Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank:
they were
not of double heart.
34
And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand.
35
And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.
36
And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand.
37
And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.

38
All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel
were
of one heart to make David king.
39
And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.
40
Moreover they that were nigh them,
even
unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen,
and
meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for
there was
joy in Israel.

13:
1
And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds,
and
with every leader.
2
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If
it seem
good unto you, and
that it be
of the L
ORD
our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where,
that are
left in all the land of Israel, and with them
also
to the priests and Levites
which are
in their cities
and
suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
3
and let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul.
4
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

5
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath-jearim.
6
And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah,
that is,
to Kirjath-jearim, which
belonged
to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the L
ORD
, that dwelleth
between
the cherubims, whose name is called
on it.
7
And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart.
8
And David and all Israel played before God with all
their
might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.

9
And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.
10
And the anger of the L
ORD
was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.
11
And David was displeased, because the L
ORD
had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called Perez-uzza to this day.
12
And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God
home
to me?

13
So David brought not the ark
home
to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
14
And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the L
ORD
blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.

14:
1
Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and timber of cedars, with masons and carpenters, to build him an house.
2
And David perceived that the L
ORD
had confirmed him king over Israel, for his kingdom was lifted up on high, because of his people Israel.

3
And David took more wives at Jerusalem: and David begat more sons and daughters.
4
 Now these
are
the names of
his
children which he had in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,
5
and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet,
6
and Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,
7
and Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet.

8
And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard
of it,
and went out against them.
9
And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
10
And David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand?

And the L
ORD
said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.

11
So they came up to Baal-perazim; and David smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of waters: therefore they called the name of that place Baal-perazim.
12
And when they had left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.

13
And the Philistines yet again spread themselves abroad in the valley.
14
Therefore David inquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
15
And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the mulberry trees,
that
then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.
16
David therefore did as God commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gazer.
17
And the fame of David went out into all lands; and the L
ORD
brought the fear of him upon all nations.
