‘Oh, yes, please,’ Caroline said, giving him her hand as he helped her to climb into the basket. Freddie hopped in beside her, and the other men on the ground began to cast off the ropes that were anchoring the balloon to the earth. As it started to lift, Caroline felt a little strange. She watched the people on the ground become smaller as the balloon started to drift across the sky, rising higher and higher until they looked down on the treetops. ‘Oh, Freddie,’ she breathed as he came to put his arm about her waist, ‘isn’t it wonderful? I never dreamed anything could be this exciting.’

‘No,’ Freddie agreed, but he was looking at her, at her lovely, expressive face and her glorious hair tumbling about her shoulders. He was remembering the previous night when he had seemed as though he could never have his fill of her, thinking of the pleasure she gave him with every word, every smile. Had he been bored with his life only a few short months ago? He certainly wasn’t now, for every day seemed fresh and new. ‘Do you know, my darling, neither have I…’
