“Yeah.”
“The letter?”
He glanced down, smoothing the paper in his hand. “She thanked us for our service to the Crown. Apparently Frobisher's been using the Royal Hunters for his own purposes for some time, and she wasn't sure how to rein him in short of an all-out battle.”
Alexa sighed and rolled her eyes. “Surely that's not all.”
Winn shrugged. “Your people have been released at Castle Barranoch. She asked me to deliver the enclosed message to Marley. Something about supporting a critical mission.”
“Are you going to open it?”
He cracked a smile. “You know me; I'm not the type to go looking for trouble. We'll have enough once we get back to Bodie and have to close the Gates.”
Her full lips tilted up in a way that made all his aches, scars, and pains, old and new, fade away completely. “You don't have to look for trouble. It seems to find you.”
He pulled her close, taking extra care with her injured shoulder, fully aware that, despite her mortal state, she was still just as full of fire as she'd been the day he'd met her. She was strong and smart, beautiful and inventive, his Tessa. In shortâthe perfect woman for a Hunter like him. “And will you be right there beside me when it comes around?” he asked softly.
Her gaze, full of acceptance and admiration, fixed on his. “There's no place else I'd rather be.”
