Tony rolls his eyes and crosses his arms over his chest, leaning dramatically against the jamb. “Ryan was a putz. Easily disposed of if he stepped out of line. Kimberly liked him. It eased her mind for them to be together. I didn’t see the harm.”

“For someone who wants his son to be his own man, letting him be emotionally beaten up by his boyfriend for years seems counterintuitive.”

“Are you advocating I should have had the boy killed?”

“No, I’m saying you should have stuck up for your son.”

Tony smiles. “Do you know my favorite thing about you, Dr. McCloud?”

Patrick shrugs.

You
stick up for my son and you’ve taught him to stick up for himself. Consider yourself under my protection, under
Molinaro
protection, no matter the outcome of this marriage.”

Patrick stares at Tony, who winks and closes the door without another word.

“Thanks?” Patrick mutters under his breath, heading back to the stairwell and taking the stairs up two at a time.

His mind is assimilating all the new pieces of information he’s picked up when he gets back to the room and finds Will sitting on the bed, putting on his socks. He gives Patrick a radiant smile and asks, “What took so long? Where’s your trashy second breakfast?”

“Decided against it.”

Will cocks his head. “You okay?”

Patrick smooths his hands down the front of his maroon shirt. “Just saw Mobster Daddy down on the second floor.”

Will’s expression loses its shine. “What’d he want?”

“He said to tell you goodbye. He’s leaving town.”

Will snorts and jerks his pant leg down over his sock. “Good riddance.”

“Couldn’t agree more.” Patrick isn’t going to mention the promise to drop the Hammond case until that materializes. He’s pretty sure Tony’s a man of his word, but caution usually serves him well. “I’m gonna go down to the gym. Run on the treadmill. Get some of this tension out.”

He feels Will watching as he shucks his pants and shirt to pull on a pair of running shorts and tee.

“I need to hit the gym too.” Will pinches at his stomach through his shirt. “It’s been a while. I was thinking we could go together tonight.”

“Sure. I’ll do weights and you can have the treadmill.” Patrick pulls on running shoes while Will finishes gathering everything he needs to leave for work.

“Patrick?” Will says, his hand on the door. “Are we okay? You’ve been strange—well, stranger than usual the last few days.” He hitches up his murse and gazes at Patrick worriedly.

“I’m fine.”

Will’s silence makes Patrick’s stomach hurt. His dark eyes are shadowed and his lip is in his mouth. “Is this because I’m a slut?”

Patrick stares. “What did you say?”

“Is this because of last night and everything I got off on?”

“No. Why are you worried about that?”

“Because…because Ryan would—”

“Ryan isn’t here. I’m here. And I like what we do. I like it a lot. I
love
it.” He steps forward and takes hold of Will’s hands. The wobble of Will’s chin and the insecurity in his eyes is a kick to Patrick’s heart.

“I want to believe that.”

Patrick feels a sharp, wrenching hurt that takes his breath away, and he opens his mouth to say the words that will make Will very late to work and probably break Patrick’s heart, but his pager starts to beep insistently and his cell phone rings at the same time.

“Dammit,” he mutters, releasing
Will to grab his cell phone, snapping, “Yeah?”

He listens, barely hearing, staring at Will watching him from the door with curious eyes as Don tells him that Missy Hammond has dropped the lawsuit against him. He’s officially reinstated as of
now.

“Now?”

“Right now,” Don says, chuckling. “And this will really make your day. We have a fresh neurotrauma in need of immediate surgery. Get yourself in here and make yourself useful, doctor. I’ll see you soon.”

As he closes his phone, Patrick feels a familiar rush of adrenaline, the kind he
knows
how to deal with. “Missy Hammond dropped the case. That was Don.”

Will’s expression turns from tentative confidence to instant joy. His smile is huge as he crosses the room in three steps, grabs Patrick, and hugs him. “This is great news! I’m so happy for you!” He squeezes Patrick hard enough that the breath comes out of him in a fast oomph.

Patrick strokes the back of Will’s neck. “I’ve gotta go. 911 neurotrauma to deal with.”

“Hurry, hurry, go!” Will releases him, rocking excitedly on the balls of his feet. “Go be a superhero! Save a life!”

Patrick re-dresses in his shirt and pants, and he’s ready to go in minutes despite the fact that Will’s hands are on him the whole time, patting and squeezing, like by touching Patrick he’s somehow helping the process along.

“Okay.” Patrick wipes a hand over his face, glancing around the room. He’s got everything he needs. “Okay. I got this.” He turns to Will. “But first, never call yourself a slut again. And second, don’t doubt me. I never lie to you.”

Will’s eyes grow big, and he bites on his lip. “I know.”

Patrick’s hand is on the door when Will stops him, grabs each side of his face, and looks at him with a dopey smile. He kisses Patrick with a fast pop and pats the side of his face, his eyes shining. “Go get ’em, baby.”

Patrick grabs Will and kisses him hard until Will pulls away, a coy smile playing on his face. “Seriously, go. No time to waste.”

Patrick steadies himself with a last look at Will before heading out, rushing with purpose and focus, powered by a pearl of shining hope.

Arriving at Good Works, Will hangs his coat and scarf on the peg, and no sooner sits down to wake his laptop than his cell phone rings. His heart leaps, hoping it’s Patrick, but a fast glance at the clock tells him that it’s been less than an hour since Patrick left. Unless the patient died, and Will really hopes that’s not the case, it won’t be him.

Caller ID says it’s his Nonna.

“Will, darling, how are you?”

“I’m fine, Nonna.” Will smiles. “Thanks for coming to dinner last night. I’m sorry things ended so abruptly.”

“Oh, darling, I understood and thought you put on a marvelous performance.”

Will clicks open his email on his laptop and decides to let any conversation about his father go. He’s just not interested. “So, what’s up?”

“I have potentially good news for you.”

“You do?” Will wonders if she’s calling to tell them what they already know about Missy Hammond dropping the lawsuit.

“Yes, darling, though I don’t know how you’ll feel about it.” She pauses dramatically. “I just heard from your father. There has been a sea-change from the top in the Molinaro family. You and Patrick can get a divorce!”
