The Enpathian’s arm flashed out, stretching out straight, palm flat and pointed towards Heather. There was no physical contact…

But Heather felt a jolt slam through her body, every muscle locking up, and she fell backwards onto the cushioning floor of the ship.

A second later, Jessam was standing over her, a bemused smile on her unnaturally white lips.

Heather couldn’t move; she could only breathe, but nothing more…

“For you, dearest, I don’t need a stunner. Mekrons are immune to my psychic talents, but humans… No.”

Heather tried to speak, but her mouth refused to form words.

Paralyzed.

But she’s Enpathian,
she thought.
She can hear my thoughts…

“Yes,” Jessam said. “I can indeed.”

You’re following Gearon? Jealous? You want to hurt me? Hurt him? Stop him, what…?

“So many questions, all so vague. But rest assured I’m not here to harm anyone. I care for Gearon, but I am past jealousy. My prime interest is in
your
connection to him, Heather.”

I love him and I’m willing to die with him.

I probably will.

“Likely, yes. But we haven’t much time. Physical contact will speed this along. Please try and relax your mind.”

Heather tried to send waves of hatred Jessam’s way, shouting
“BITCH!  BITCH! BITCH!”
in her mind. She knew the Enpathian had to hear it… but the slim, pale invader showed no reaction.

She bent down over Heather, placed one small, cool hand on her forehead …

And Heather’s mind was wrenched suddenly forward into a sea of images of--

GEARON.

LORD GEARON TEAGUE, LAST OF THE MEKRONS.

Heather’s perceptions were filled with HIS winsomely smiling face, those deep and smoldering violet eyes, the wild blue hair, the chiseled contours of his body …

Joy and excitement filled her as she relived the recent events since meeting him, re-saw and re-experienced every sight, sound, smell and touch of him at an accelerated pace.

At the cinema, being held in his lap… the chase on the scout bike, in the ship, and the lovemaking…

SLOW DOWN!
She mentally cried out as all the love and ecstasy of their recent coupling raced through her mind. Far from satiated, she wanted to experience it again and again… She wished she had a remote control, a rewind button.

And suddenly, the mental impressions DID regress violently, rewinding so swiftly that she couldn’t savor anything—

—Until she was facing Gearon, just before their recent mating. Once again, the scene replayed, she was looking into his deep, violet eyes, her own face reflected in them as he bent close to her, speaking of …

BONDING.

“If only I could… You make me burn to do so!”

And, suddenly, Heather was in the present again, lying on the floor of the ship, looking up at the pale and impassive Jessam, whose face still displayed a smug expression.

“So,” the Enpathian Commander said, “My instincts were correct. He HAS chosen you. I can’t read his mind, but I’ve seen enough in yours to confirm that.”

“Chosen?” Heather asked. And she realized she’d spoken aloud.

She tried to wriggle her fingers, and they moved. She started to sit up …

“I mean you no harm,” Jessam said. “And I imagine you’d like to be able to move a bit? But try and attack me, and I’ll have to incapacitate you again. Now, do we agree to play nice for now?”

Heather, now sitting up, nodded. “Don’t suppose I have a choice. But Gearon… ?”

“I’ll wake up our big boy now,” Jessam smirked.

She pulled a little square, blue strip of a tape-like substance from her waist-pack. It reminded Heather of one those mouthwash strips that dissolved in your mouth. Except, in this case, Jessam placed it on Gearon’s forehead. It swiftly dissolved, soaking into his skin.

As soon as it disappeared, Gearon’s violet eyes flashed open.

Heather was bent over him, stroking his stubbled cheeks. Gearon looked to her first, smiling and sighing… As if relieved to see that she was unharmed.

Then, the Mekron Lord turned his gaze to Jessam, and his eyes narrowed.

“You needed to stun me--why?” he asked.

“Reports indicated that this human female was very close to you. I needed to get deep inside her mind, but I knew you would be… noble. Protective. And time is short. It seemed most expedient to relieve you of consciousness for a few minutes.”

Heather put her hand behind Gearon’s hard-muscled back and “helped” him up … Though truthfully he didn’t seem to need her support, rising quickly and little worse for wear.

“Gearon,” Heather said, looking down, slightly ashamed. “She knocked me out too, just used her telepathy and she… ripped through my memories. I didn’t even have time to resist.”

He kissed her forehead and stroked her hair soothingly. “Prettiness, Jessam is one of the mightiest Enpathian telepaths. There was nothing you could do.  Though I do wonder…” He looked to Jessam, tilting his head and assessing her, “Why is she doing this, yes?”

Jessam sighed. “Gearon, when you last left me… All I could think of was how empty I’d become. Just some vessel, some puppet. For Grommalacht… and for you, when you needed what knowledge I had. I needed to get past it all. In the vernacular of your culture, Heather,” she said, looking bemusedly at her, “I needed to ‘move on with my life.’”

“But you’re helping Gearon?” Heather asked. “Or are you here to turn him in or something?”

She laughed. “If the latter were the case, wouldn’t I have left him stunned? Of course I am here to help. Or, I should say, to offer what help I can … To our dear Lord Teague and to you as well, Heather Holzengruber.”

While Jessam talked, Gearon took a blanket from a storage compartment under the couch and draped it around Heather. It was funny; until that moment, Heather hadn’t been conscious of her nakedness. With Gearon nude and Jessam in her clinging flesh-suit, she hadn’t felt out of place.

Jessam continued: “Mind you, I doubt that the outcome of this day will be anything but disastrous for all of us, regardless. I’d say I came to offer a slim hope… but slim seems far too generous a term.”    

Gearon nodded. “Jessam, though your methods are somewhat… disquieting, I think we do welcome your aid, yes? All of this time, you have managed to keep this secret, these things you’ve done today and before, to help me? It is amazing, even with your mental power, that you can hide all of this from your Grommalacht.”

Jessam shook her head and spread her arms. “Oh no, Gearon. Even I can’t hide that much. The truth is, Grommalacht knows…
almost
everything.”

“What?” Heather asked, panic gripping her chest. “Does it know where we are now?”

Jessam nodded. “Of course. He knows exactly where we are, that I am with you… He knows that you are here, Heather, and that you have strong feelings for our Mekron Lord. He knows everything, except…”

She leaned forward towards them, her eyes slitted, and cupped one hand to her mouth, whispering: “Except for a
few
details.” While she whispered, she poked her other hand into the little pack at her waist, fondling something inside… Though she didn’t take it out, or reveal what it was. “I am one of the strongest telepaths ever to come out of the Enpathian Academy. I have a few tricks left.”

“But if Grommalacht knows that I am coming for him, and he knows where we are now located… Why have we not already been destroyed?” Gearon asked. “Does he not know that he is vulnerable? The main weapon of this ship is enough to tear asunder even a being such as he, yes?”

Jessam launched into a strange, wheezing laugh that Heather found somewhat less than reassuring.

“Gearon,” Heather asked, “What IS the main weapon of this ship?”

“Well,” he said, “ahh… difficult to explain in simple terms. A violently curved section of spacetime, locally contained, with quantum controls enabling it to be projected a short distance outside of the ship and used as a massively destructive gravity weapon.”

Heather shook her head. “I’m not quite sure I got that… But ok, it’s REALLY powerful, right? That I understand.”

Jessam smiled patronizingly at her. “What it is, dearest one, is… what you would call in the crude scientific parlance of your world… is a black hole. A very small one, artificially generated and contained in this ship. The cutting edge of Mekron science, from just before their planet was… destroyed. Gearon here only barely managed to escape with the ship. But he’s always been afraid to use the weapon. “

“Untrue,” Gearon replied. “I am just awaiting the right moment.”

“Well, Gearon,” Jessam said, “let me tell you what you’re planning. You’re oh so very predictable, so I assume I have the gist of it. But do correct me if I’m wrong. Grommalacht is a being of intense energy bound up in a relatively small space. You’d really like to hit him with your little black hole, suck him in and neatly dispose of him, like some bit of garbage. That’s about the only thing guaranteed to eliminate him.”

“Except,” she continued, “this ship,
Astral Tryst
--as the name implies--was designed to be flown by two: pilot and copilot, male and female, a Bonded pair. Technically, the female would be the pilot, and the male the copilot and gunner--who would operate the black hole device.”

“I could try and fly it again,” Heather volunteered.

“No, prettiness” Gearon said firmly, shaking his head. “You were fortunate before, yes? A few more seconds and it would have killed you. Human females are not meant for that neural interface.”

“And,” Jessam continued, “without a coordinated, Bonded pair of male and female Mekron partners controlling the ship’s systems, you can never get close enough. You will never maneuver through the spacetime curves around Grommalacht’s core. Gearon by himself will
never
succeed in neatly sucking up Grommalacht. He doesn’t want to admit this, but he never thought his chances were very good, anyway. Soooo…” she smiled as if delighted by her own insights, “he’s probably thinking that, at least, he can make a noble sacrifice. A messier solution.  A desperation plan.”

“Plan B,” Gearon whispered.

Jessam nodded. “This desperation plan… Which he hopes will take effect if he misses with the black hole weapon anyway… Is that the black hole will compress and swallow this entire planet in a matter of seconds, taking Grommalacht with it. Or so he hopes.

“But…” she spread her arms and sighed, “that won’t work. The speed of light is not fast enough to escape a black hole. But Grommalacht can travel
faster
than light. And his reactions are not slow, not like those of us feeble organic beings. With a millisecond warning, he will escape. At best, you will deprive him of a meal… He will not feast on the psyches of this planet’s people, but they will all die in the black hole. And you and your dearest Heather, and probably myself and most of the Enpathians on planet will perish as well in the chain reaction.”

“So we are doomed,” Heather sighed—then shot Jessam a deadly glance. “Did you come here just to gloat?”

“I’m sorry,” Gearon told her, wrapping one huge, strong arm around her shoulder. “I don’t want to destroy your planet. But I have to try something. Your people will die, not regarding the…”

“I know, love,” Heather told him, gripping his square jaw and turning his head so that he met her gaze. “I do not blame you for anything. You never lied to me.”

No guarantees, prettiness.

“You know,” Jessam added, “the worst part of it is, Grommalacht knows EVERYTHING about your plans, Gearon. Your options, after all, are very limited… And yet he is willing to see this planet sucked into the oblivion of the black hole JUST to see you fail and die. Even if that means he loses his meal, his ground troops, and his investment in this planet. He
really
hates Mekrons, apparently, and wants to see the last of them fail and burn.”

This was
insane
. God, yes, Heather wanted to fight for Earth, to stop this thing, but … for Gearon to throw everything away in a suicidal gesture that his enemy anticipated? At least …if they could get away, she could still have some time with him…

“My Lord,” she told him, leaning into his broad chest for support. “Gearon, please… Let’s get out of here.  Go into space, somewhere… Maybe you can find some other way to fight Grommalacht. But right now, if what she says is right… I don’t want to lose Earth, but there’s… There’s no point!”

Jessam nodded. “Your human female speaks sensibly, Lord Teague.”

Gearon turned to Heather, embracing her tightly, clasping her so hard it was almost painful. “My prettiness,” he whispered. “If it were only me, I would never run, truly. But, for you …”

“You’re so very devoted to each other,” Jessam said, smiling. “That’s good. Heather, do you know how long Enpathians and Mekrons live? Hundreds of years, potentially thousands. Five hundred years I’ve known Gearon Teague, and for five hundred years I’ve wanted him to burn in his heart for me like he does for you. Burning hot as a sun’s core for you—AFTER ONE DAY.”
