“As much as I admire you
for facing your fears, I can’t let you jump into freezing water,” he said.
“I have to. It’s the only way.” I backed away from him.
“Sophie, jumping is just a metaphor. It doesn’t actually mean you have to jump off a cliff to conquer your fears,” he said.
“I know that, but right now, it’s the only thing I can think of doing.”
“What if there was another way?”
“Is there
?”
“A jump like this is nothing but a leap of faith.” He sounded nervous. “What if you took a leap of faith on me instead?”
“That’s what I’m trying to do.”
“Love is one of your fears, right?”
“Yes.”
“Then instead of killing yourself by jumping into an icy cold ocean.” I noticed his breathing pick up as he pulled something out of his bag. “Why don’t you jump head first into love, and marry me?” He handed me the journal my mom
gave me, which had the biggest diamond ring I had ever seen tied to it.
It was my breathing that was now faltering as I stared down at him in shock. Getting back together with him was one
thing, but marriage? He had just created a new fear for me. Of course I would be a complete idiot if I had said no after that proposal.
“Okay,” I answered.
“Please tell me that’s a yes.” He held his breath.
“That’s a yes.” I smiled at him.
I watched as he carefully untied the ring from my journal and slipped it on my finger. He kept eye contact with me as he stood up and wrapped one hand around my lower waist and his other hand around the back of my neck.
“And so we begin,” he whispered before he sealed the deal with a kiss.
I guess my mom was right. Fairytales are real, and dreams do come true, just not the ones written by us. Real dreams have been written in the stars by God for all the read.
