Authors: Roberta Kagan
Katja looked up a Zofia, her lower lip puffed out. Her feelings were hurt and she began to sob.
“I’m sor
ry, Sunshine. Don’t cry. I’m sorry I hollered at you. I know you only wanted to see the dog, but please you must not leave my side. You are far too precious to me. I don’t want to lose you… Alright? Promise me.”
Katja
nodded.
“Now give me your hand and we will have to go to the end
of the line. We’ve lost our place/”
Zofia and Katja
walked together past the crowds who waited to board the exodus. The smell of sweat permeated the air.
“Zofia,”
A voice rang out, from somewhere within the line of tattered refugees. “Zofia…” It was a voice she recognized, in fact one she could not mistake. The bright rays of the sun on that crystal blue day stung her eyes as she surveyed the crowd in search of the voice who called for her, the one who knew her by name.
And then,
her breath caught and her lungs tightened, her hand went to her throat. She was shocked with recognition, as she looked right into the eyes of a very familiar face.
“Z
ofia…”
“Oh my God, it’s you.” She said.
“Yes, it’s me…”
Zofia felt dizzy as if she might faint. Her heart palpated. Could she believe her eyes or were they deceiving her blinded by the sun’s bright rays. All around her Zofia heard the buzz of conversations and in each one she heard words like “the promised land,” “A place of safety, a home for our people,” “a Jewish homeland at last, where our children can grow up without fear.”
The crowded line of hopeful tattered and broken refugees moved forward.
A light sun shower fell from the sky.
“The end of our suffering, finally the end of our suffering,” someone said.
Zofia could hardly catch her breath. “You’re here?” She said knowing it sounded foolish, but she could not believe her eyes.
”Is it really you?” The words caught in her throat.
“Perhaps we will finally have a land where we can live in safety, a place to call our home….”
A man said to another man who wore a tall black hat. .
“Yes, we have surely waited a long time
, and Oy how we have suffered for this. But now, praise God we are on our way to Palestine, to the Promised Land.” A woman answered the man with the black hat tears covering her bony cheeks.
The Promised Land.
Yes, soon all of them, would board the boat called the Exodus, and be on their way to Palestine, a land that the English had promised to them. A dream comes true at long last. A dream that had kept so many alive during the horrors they endured in the Concentration Camps. Surely the Jew’s had suffered enough, surely their suffering would end now as they boarded the vessel soon to sail out into the ocean, out of Europe, and away from the memories of all that had happened there. Soon all of that would be behind them. Yes, soon….soon they would step aboard the boat and never look back. Soon, If only it had been that easy, if only… But the Jews, although they didn’t know it at the time, the chosen people, had a long road ahead. A road filled with challenges, and danger, with lies and false promises, with unseen enemies, and a fight for a dream that would cost them dearly. And continue to cost them forever. But they would go forward, forward to a barren desert on the other side of the world, and from the dry land unproductive land, they would find a way to produce fertile soil capable of growing food. And here they would strive to build a home, a home for Jews, a place where Jews could turn if the world ever turned their backs on them again, a place they would one-day call, “Israel.”
Coming soon, “The Promised Land…”
Who was it that Zofia met up with on her way to Palestine? Was it Shlomie? Was it Manfred? Was it Isaac? Was it Eidel and Helen? Was it Christa? Or perhaps it was someone else? Read the Promised Land and find out.
