I slammed the door behind me
and stumbled backward. I covered my face with both hands and slid down the door
onto my behind. I sobbed until I couldn’t spill anymore tears. When I gazed up
some time later, at shadows all around me, I saw the intruder alarm flickering.
I wiped my face and squinted. It was okay, it was flickering a green dot.
‘Come on,’ I told myself. I
forced myself up from the cold floor and stumbled toward the living room. I saw
the TV and looked at it like it was the key to my hurt-free life. I grabbed the
remote and heard, “Knock knock stupid, electricity is off.” I tried anyway. The
TV made a buzz sound and then washed into color. I caressed my chest and had to
sit.
‘Do you remember Barney and
Friends guys? Well
a
guess what – now you can buy the DVD and relive the
fun all over–’ I grabbed my throat and changed the channel.
I stopped flicking when I saw
the logo at the bottom right. CNN. A woman, dressed in a red coat that screamed
professional, walked around in a hospital ward.
‘…government is urging for
people to stay indoors. As you can see behind me, the wards are full. It’s
estimated that three hundred are dead and over eight hundred are seriously
injured. Again, we urge people to stay indoors and wait for additional
information.’ The remote slipped from my hands. I grabbed my face and began to cry.
I thought about what I had done, how I pushed the poor lady to protect myself.
I thought of Angeline and her baby. Had to get myself under control. I wiped my
nose and got up. I checked every window and every door. When I was satisfied
that everything was locked – I checked again. I then got a knife and climbed
into bed.
Three
days later.
I opened my eyes and saw the
clock, 04.43. Time to get up. Can’t be sleeping when Earth opened its gate for Hell.
They said yesterday that, things are getting better and that it was some kind
of freak virus strand – I don’t believe them. I need to go see what the latest
is. I stood up, took the knife, and tip toed toward the curtains. I brushed it
aside and peeked. The roads were empty; the night quiet. I slipped my robe on
and stopped. My heart raced. I saw him standing at the door with the knife
protruding from his head – I shook my head. That reminds me, I need to call
Angeline and see if she’s okay. If her baby’s okay. If they made it out alive.
I gripped the knife and made my way down the stairs. Halfway down, I knelt and
looked around for anything – nothing. Nothing that I could see. No black eyes.
I held the remote up and
frowned. Something wasn’t right. My ears picked up on the faintest sound. I shook
my head and thought nothing of it but then I heard it again. A metal clang. I
looked at the kitchen and then around me – it was coming from outside. I rushed
toward the curtains. A group of youngsters walked past with baseball bats and were
dressed in dangling tins. They were chanting: “We protect we protect; we
protect we protect – so let’s all stand and protect.”
‘Stupid.’ I said. ‘So stupid.’ Do
they know of the lurkers that prefer human flesh? Have they seen those black
eyes for themselves? I doubt it. They barely looked fifteen. Wouldn’t be
surprised if they began scream–
Screams.

Rock
and a Giant
Elijah,
a husband and a father, lives in a world where the trees are black and the

would have frowned upon such thinking; helping others was a sign of good breed.
But things are different now. Elijah realized from a young age, that the world
he was born in requires a selfish mindset. You take what you need and don't
think twice about it. There's a good reason for it…
The story begins here:

At first, the operator thinks it's some kind of
joke – a silly prank…
