The phone rang. Alison looked at her clock. It was 2:00 a.m. She knew instantly that something had happened to one of her parents. The voice on the other end of the line was strange to her – at first.

“Alison, it’s Adele Hammond. I’m sorry but I have some bad news for you. Rick died two hours ago of a massive heart attack. He didn’t suffer. The doctor said it was instant.”

She couldn’t say a word, was frozen on the edge of her bed.

“I’ve called his children and they are on the way out, said they will talk to you later. I know it’s hard to be so far away. If I can do anything to help, please let me know. Rick was one of my best people and he lived for your visits every week. He told me you were getting married next month and would be moving here. I am so sorry, Alison.”

“Thank you. The stress was just too much for him. I worried so much about him. I appreciated how much you helped him. I will call you in a couple of days, okay? I need to hang up and go somewhere and scream.”

Alison did not wait for a response. She hung up the phone and headed to the shower where she screamed and screamed for what seemed like hours. She felt she had killed him. 

Oh, Alison, revenge is not sweet, is it?
