Jaimie lifted her brow. “I’m very good at multitasking. I’m listening. Continue. Besides, you’re doing all the work.”
“Hmm, might have to do something about that.” The front closure of her bra snapped open. She sighed as he took her twin girls in hand.
“Talk, Prince Sneaky Bastard.” There was no heat in her command.”
Bryce sighed, wrapped his arms around her, and carried her to a seating area beneath the window. He sat, keeping her on him, so she straddled his hips. “I want to make you the new department head. I want you to come back.”
Stunned, Jaimie could only stare. The offered promotion was more than she’d ever hoped or dreamed of landing, though it was a job she was qualified to undertake. She frowned. “Why do you want me to come back?”
“I could say it’s because I love you, but that’s not the reason. You showed courage and initiative in what you did, and that is what I want in all my employees. You more than proved yourself. You earned the promotion.” He lifted a brow. “And not on your backside either, though I do have a couple fantasies that involve you in heels and a very short skirt in this office.”
Jaimie rolled her eyes. “I’m not sneaking up here for a nooner.”
“That’s a shame.” He shrugged. “What do you say, Miss Newberry. Will you return? I’ll warn you, your first task will be to hire new accountants as more than half of the department, along with your old boss, have been fired.”
Nodding, Jaimie smiled. “Yes, I’ll come back. Thank you.”
“And you’ll take the money I offered to pay?”
She shook her head. “No. I did what was right and that’s that.” She grinned. “I was serious about the five hundred, otherwise I’ll be out on the street.”
Bryce laughed, gathered her close, and kissed her. “I think I can manage that.” He nibbled on her ear lobe, his breath warm, making her shiver. “Now, about us.” He kissed her along her shoulder.
Jaimie sighed, closed her eyes, and let herself fall under his spell. “What we had wasn’t real. It was a game.” Happily ever after didn’t exist in her world. His lips trailed up her throat.
“It was real for me,” he said, his mouth beside hers. “When I fell in love with my wife, I knew the minute our eyes met she was the one for me. The first touch, first kiss, only confirmed what my heart knew.” He kissed her tenderly, then eased back and framed her face in his hands. “I never thought I’d feel that again, but that first night, when you stood in front of that mirror, trusting me even though you were a bit nervous, I knew I’d lose my heart to you.”
“But we don’t really know each other.” Jaimie wanted to take everything his eyes offered but was afraid it wouldn’t last.
“Our hearts know. They knew the minute our gazes first met. Our minds will catch up. It’s all in the details, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life learning everything about you. Will you give me a chance?”
Grinning, Jaimie said, “Yes.” After a long, passionate kiss, she tipped her head back. “Where do we start?”
Bryce grinned. “With a certain fantasy of mine.” He set her on her feet, took her by the hand, and pulled her toward the door, which he locked. Then he returned to his desk and pulled out a pair of glass heels. “I want you naked and wearing only these.”
He knelt to slip them onto her feet, and Jaimie knew she’d found her prince.
About the Author
Sydney St. Claire is the pseudonym of Susan Edwards, author of 14 Native American/Western/Paranormal romances.
Susan credits her mother for her writing success. Encouraged to read, Susan always preferred happy endings. When the writing bug bit, she followed the sensible advice to "write what you know" and she's been writing and publishing her stories since!
Writing is often a challenge as her office is quite crowded with two small dogs at her feet, another huge girl in her recliner and five cats to keep her company. Life gets fun when all five insist on supervising…
When not writing, she enjoys crafts of all sorts including quilting, sewing, cross-stitch and knitting. Knitting and crochet are her current passions. She and her husband of 30 plus years are avid gardeners.
She is of course, an avid reader and hates cooking and housework. While writing, she listens to a wide variety of music, including Neil Diamond, Celtic, Native American, New Age, Classical, and mood music (bagpipes and howling wolves drive my family nuts). Her current favorites are Blackmore's Night and David Lanz.
