George III

British monarch from ad 1760, of the House of Hanover. Born 1738, son of Frederick , eldest son of George II. Married Charlotte , daughter of Charles Louis , duke of Mechlenburg-Strelitz. Died ad 1820 aged 81, having reigned 59 years.
George IV

British monarch from ad 1820, of the House of Hanover. Born 1762, eldest son of George III. Married Caroline , daughter of Charles, duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Died ad 1830 aged 67, having reigned ten years.
Georgian

In England the Georgian period is approximately 1714–1810. Architectural styles of the period were derived from classical and Renaissance Italian architecture.
Gepids

Germanic tribe who occupied the middle Danube area and who led a revolt against Attila's sons during the 450s

the Gepids fought a series of wars against their neighbours the Lombards which ended in their decisive defeat. The surviving Gepids were swallowed up by the Avars after 568.
Ghirshman , Roman
(1895–1979)

A Ukrainian-French scholar and archaeologist who did much to develop archaeological work in Iran and Afghanistan. Before WW2 he worked at Tello in southern Iraq with D. Genouillac before moving on to carry out important excavations at Giyan and Sialk in western Iran. Just before the war he worked at historic period sites in eastern Iran and in Afghanistan. After WW2 and through to 1963 he was director of the French excavations at Susa in Mesopotamia, with some work also at Choga Zanbil nearby.
