sites and monuments record
(SMR)
[Ge].
British term used to describe the detailed records of the known archaeological investigations (sites or events), remains (monuments), findspots, buried deposits, and areas of archaeological potential of various kinds within the geographical jurisdiction of a local authority (usually a county, district, National Park, unitary authority, or region). Most SMRs involve a computerized database linked to a series of maps, increasingly through the application of GIS technology. The main purpose of SMRs is to underpin advice given through the planning process, but they are also important tools for research and education. In 2000, the SMRs in England held about 1 million separate records of archaeological items.
