He’d been forced to retire from the DEA once it became obvious that his shooting hand would never gain back the mobility it needed for him to fire a weapon. He could have taken a desk job, but he’d been more insulted by the offer than anything. Cade was still at loose ends, trying to decide what to do with his life, but Cooper had a feeling things would turn around for him soon.
As for his own life, he wished daily that he hadn’t wasted so many years avoiding his feelings for Claire. She was his world and the one person who could bring light to the shadows that haunted him.
He felt her hands slip around his waist from behind. She always seemed to have some kind of sixth sense of when he was thinking about her. He turned in her arms and gave her upturned mouth a slow, lazy kiss. He watched her eyes darken, and he felt the familiar stirring of desire that never got old when he held her.
“I love you, Claire MacKenzie.”
Her smile lit up her face, and she leaned up to whisper in his ear. “Do you think anyone would notice if we snuck into the house so you could have your way with me?”
“No, I don’t think anyone would notice at all.” He put down his beer and tossed her over his shoulder, carrying her into the house to the sound of MacKenzie cheers and bawdy suggestions.
“I’m going to get you for that,” she said, laughing, her face red with embarrassment.
He sat her down in one of the guest rooms and lay back on the bed, giving her a wicked look full of suggestion.
“You’re right, of course. I deserve whatever punishment you give me. I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do to me.”
“I’m going to love you, Cooper. Forever and always.”
