ABOUT THE AUTHOR

NINE YEARS AGO

Seventeen-year-old Daisy Edwards
stared up at the stars as Fitz English kissed a trail from under
her ear to her throat, his naked body warm and hard over hers. He
assumed she’d done this before and she didn’t correct him, but the
truth was, she hadn’t. And though she was trying to look relaxed
about losing her virginity to the gorgeous college guy with whom
she’d been falling in love all summer, inside her heart was
racing.

Are you ready?” he panted
into her ear, and Daisy clenched her eyes shut as her nerves
threatened to get the better of her.

You can’t turn back
now,
she chastised herself. After all, she
was the instigator wasn’t she? She’d been the one to leave her
Uncle’s house after midnight and throw pebbles at Fitz’s window
until he had woken up, raised the paned glass, and looked down at
her.

Let’s go skinny dipping!”
she’d suggested in a loud whisper, with a beaming grin, looking at
his bare chest and rumpled hair. “One last time?”

He’d smiled back at her—that sexy,
“we-shouldn’t” smile he’d been giving her all summer, making her
insides run hot and wet as tingles sluiced down her back. He was so
freaking hot, she couldn’t believe it when she’d caught him
checking out her legs the first week of her visit. By the middle of
July, he was checking out her mouth with his tongue and they were
meeting clandestinely all over the English’s estate, Haverford
Park, at all hours of the night.

But summer was coming to an end now.
Tomorrow Daisy would be returning to her parent’s unhappy house in
suburban New Jersey to get ready for her senior year of high school
and a few days later Fitz would be headed to the airport for his
junior year abroad in London. They hadn’t talked about “what comes
next,” because there was no “next.” They both seemed to quietly
recognize their summer fling, no matter how perfect, was coming to
an unavoidable close, and there was nothing that either of them
could do about it.

Daisy?” he asked again,
his hardness pressing insistently against the soft virgin skin of
her thighs.

Do you have a…?” She
swallowed nervously, letting her voice trail off, unable to even
say the word “condom” out loud.

Yeah,” he said, leaning
over the side of the pool lounge chair to grab his jeans and
reaching into one of the pockets. “Are you sure you want
to?”

I’m sure,” she whispered,
looking up at his blue eyes. They were the same color as the pool
water in the moonlight. Dark aqua. Luminous and tender. She could
do worse than to give her virginity to someone with dark aqua eyes,
someone she loved, after the best summer of her life.

He leaned down and brushed his lips
against hers before kneeling on the plastic cushion and ripping
open the foil package. Sheathing himself quickly, Daisy kept her
gaze fixed on the stars, grateful for the semi-darkness that hid
her deep blush. He rolled back on top of her, covering her body
with his, and she raised her pelvis experimentally, pushing against
him lightly, loving his soft groan as she cradled his hardness, as
she waffled between feeling ready and feeling terrified.

You know how much I care
about you, right?”

Mm-hm,” she murmured,
though she didn’t. She wasn’t sure. She’d never felt about anyone
the way she felt about Fitz, but she couldn’t be sure he’d fallen
in love with her as completely as she had with him because they’d
never actually said the words.

She had only realized in the last
couple of days as she started packing for home, that she was—for
the first time in her life—deeply and terribly in love. Her heart
clenched and bled as she imagined walking away from Fitz and
getting into her father’s car tomorrow morning to be driven home.
But she had decided, maybe even against her better judgment, to
protect her feelings unless he was forthcoming with his first. Her
parents’ break up was going to be tough enough to stomach over the
next few weeks. If she told Fitz she loved him and her feelings
were left unreturned, the humiliation of his rejection, added to
the unrequited nature of her love for him, would be more bad news
than she could bear.

She both embraced and resented this
newest development in her feelings, because theirs had never been
that fraught, intense “I love you forever and ever” relationship so
popular amongst her peers. Daisy was an emotional person, but she
was too light-hearted to be happy in a relationship predicated on
angst. Their relationship had been built on summer magic. They’d
enjoyed each other in that breathless, racing, exhilaration of a
fast rollercoaster on a hot summer night. Watching each other with
smoldering looks, holding hands, kissing, touching, learning about
each other’s bodies, only stopping to share their hopes and dreams.
They’d never defined their relationship as friendship or
dating—they’d tacitly agreed to enjoy it for what it was, for
whatever undefined awesome thing it was. But in Daisy’s heart, Fitz
had quietly become her everything: her best friend, her boyfriend,
and, in a few minutes, her lover.

Fitz was a few years older, eons more
mature and more sensible in general, yet from the beginning of
their relationship, his eyes would light up at her outlandish
suggestions:

Let’s go to the local
carnival after dark, hop the fence, and kiss on the
carousel!

Let’s steal some wine and
play dirty drinking games on the trampoline!

Let’s go skinny dipping at
midnight!

He’d give her that “we shouldn’t” grin
before grabbing her hand and racing to do her bidding and fulfill
her fantasies. It was a huge part of why Daisy had fallen so hard:
because Fitz surrendered his rule-following ways to indulge her
whims. It made her feel special and even a little powerful that
someone several years older and so straight-laced would let his
hair down for her. The impetuous teenager and the too-serious
college student: somehow they’d fit together like puzzle pieces all
summer long, catching one another’s eyes, unable to keep from
smiling as they simultaneously remembered the things they’d done to
each other’s bodies the night before. Knowing that he broke rules
for her, indulged her, delighted in her—all of it made Daisy
believe he was falling in love with her, too.

And maybe he was.

But they just weren’t feelings he’d
actually expressed… yet.

We don’t have to do it,
Daisy,” he whispered.

Yes we do.
Now or never, Daisy. This is all that’s
left.

It’s been the perfect
summer.” She looked at his face, reaching up to cup his cheeks
between her hands. “I love… being with you. I want this, Fitz. I
want you. I do.”

She berated herself a
coward for backing out of saying what she really felt, but there
was still time tonight. Perhaps they would end up
exchanging
I love yous
in the moonlight after she gave herself to him. Perhaps, her
desperate heart hoped, this wouldn’t be the end of Daisy and Fitz,
after all.

He smiled and leaned down to kiss her
lips as the tip of his sex pushed against the entrance of hers. She
lowered her hands and fisted the nylon cushion beneath her, bracing
herself, trying not to tense up, trying to relax and stay in the
moment, but she was, in fact, having sex for the first time with
someone from whom she would be ripped away in the morning. Relaxed
composure was near impossible.

Oh, my God, Daze, you’re
tight,” he murmured against her ear, his breathing shallow and
ragged, as he pulled back a little for momentum, then thrust
completely forward.

Oh!” she cried in pain, a
strangled whimper rising from her throat. Tears sprang into her
eyes and trailed into her hair as her hands twisted the slick
fabric beneath them. She stared at the night sky, clenching her
teeth so hard her jaw hurt even more than her suddenly-bruised
insides.

Fitz froze, his arms trembling on
either side of her head from the effort of staying completely
still.

Daisy,” he panted, his
eyes grave, his voice gravelly with desire and confusion. “Daisy.
What the hell is going on?”

She whimpered again, wiggling a
little, trying to get used to the feel of his hardness inside of
her, but it hurt. He was so big, and she was so new at
this.

Daisy…” His eyes warned
her against lying to him, and his voice was low and serious. “Are
you a—”

Yes. I’m… I’m a—a
virgin.”

He licked his lips, still deeply
lodged inside of her. “Oh, Jesus. You are? Why didn’t you tell me?
Oh, God, Daisy, you should have said something. I would have gone
slower. I could have…”

He started inching back,
and Daisy realized he was going to pull out of her, leaving her
empty and alone on their last night together, and she couldn’t bear
it. He
might
not
love her, but she loved
him
, and she wanted this
time. She needed it. She clutched onto his hips, curling her
fingers into his skin with urgency to keep him in place.

Stop! Just. Please, Fitz.
Don’t go. Just let me get used to it for a second, okay? Just
stay.”

His eyes searched hers, his face a
mask of regret and concern as he considered her words. She read his
face easily—he was angry with himself, and a little bit with her,
too. There were probably unwritten rules about being with a virgin,
and she’d coerced Fitz into breaking them all by keeping her secret
from him. She saw. She knew. But right now, she didn’t
care.
