Giuseppi had
resorted to blowing on his scorched hand. That seemed to do the
trick as the pain began to subside.
“You okay?”
asked Farrah having stuffed her pouch to the brim.
“Yeah. I’m
alright – but, Farrah, how are we gonna get out of here?”
She didn’t
have to say a word. Luckily, the large smile on her face indicated
to Giuseppi that she had a plan.
As Farrah
peered out of the door into the dark cave, she could see the
silhouettes of the two Securo Fairies still on the ground. They had
finished the two muffins and were looking for more. Although
Giuseppi knew that his friend had something up her sleeve, he still
felt uneasy. He tried desperately to scoop up his Pescari dust that
he had dumped onto the ground and waited for instructions. Farrah
seemed unusually calm to Giuseppi.
With the pouch
of Tooth Fairy dust securely in her pocket, Farrah moved back
toward the mound and shovelled another handful.
“What are you
going to do with that, Farrah?”
“I have an
idea,” she answered, as she stared off in the direction of the
Securo Fairies in deliberation.
“I’ve
memorized a spell that only a Tooth Fairy using gold Pixie dust can
perform. It is one that allows a Tooth Fairy to temporarily
transform themselves into something or someone else.”
Giuseppi
walked over to his friend and sceptically looked at the dust that
was in Farrah’s hand.
“That’s your
plan, Farrah – to perform a spell that you have never actually
attempted before? Do you remember that the last time you tried
something like this? A huge honker appeared out of nowhere and
rammed itself up my nose? Tell me you have not forgotten?”
“No, I haven’t
forgotten, Giuseppi, but that was different. I know what I’m doing
when it comes to Tooth Fairy dust. I have practised the spells for
years. For the first time, I won’t be hindered by having the wrong
kind of dust to work with.”
“Okay, Farrah,
but if things don’t work out, I hope you have a back-up plan,”
retorted Giuseppi as he rubbed his eyes trying to rid the feeling
of nervousness.
“I won’t need a
back-up plan, Giuseppi. Just get your butt over here and stand
really still.”
Using her
other hand, Farrah took a pinch of the dust and sprinkled it on
Giuseppi’s head before she did the same to her own head. Smacking
her hands together to get rid of the excess dust, she spoke the
words to the spell slowly and carefully.
“Cambiato,
Renno, Monni.”
Farrah could
hardly believe her eyes. A smoke rose with Giuseppi evaporating
into the ground. Within seconds, he reappeared as the Queen of
Fairyland. By Giuseppi’s reaction, the spell seemed to work on
Farrah as well.
“Your
Majesty,” reacted Giuseppi almost automatically as he got down on
the ground and bowed to Farrah. She had transformed into the King
of Fairyland or at least the spitting image of the royal king,
robes, crown and all. When Giuseppi stood up to shake Farrah’s hand
however, his hand went right through hers.
“What
the…”
“Oh, sorry,
Giuseppi, I forgot to tell you that we have just been transformed
into the holographic image of the Fairy King and Queen. So whatever
you do, don’t let anyone touch you.”
Giuseppi was
having a little fun with his holographic body. He swiped his fist
into the wall a few times, amused by how it disappeared into the
thick rock.
“Okay, enough
playing, Giuseppi. I’m not sure how long this spell will last so
we’ve got to get going.”
“What do we do
now, Farrah?”
“We are just
going to walk right past them.”
“What if
they...”
However, it was
too late. Farrah had already walked out of the vault. Giuseppi
quickly caught up to her. His heart pounded as he approached the
two disgruntled, starving Securo Fairies. Upon seeing them, they
quickly dropped their head and bowed as they always did when in the
presence of their royal highnesses.
“My King.”
“My
Queen.”
Farrah gave a
little wave and continued past the two Fairies. Giuseppi followed
behind her. Not turning to look back, they headed straight out the
exit of the cave. The ten Securo Fairies, who had been huddled
around the dead carcases of the two watchbeasts, turned in their
direction as they walked out. In unison, they all dropped to the
ground and bowed.
“Your
Majesty,” they repeated altogether.
Once again,
Farrah and Giuseppi gave a little wave. They walked past again and
rounded the mountain and out of sight.
“How the heck
were the King and Queen able to get past us without any of us
noticing?” asked one of the Securo Fairies as he got back up to his
feet.
“Shut-up,”
commanded the Head Securo. “When we were fighting over the muffins,
they must have walked straight in.”
“But...”
“I said zip
it. If the King ever found out that we left our post unattended, he
would behead us. Plus, I’m still trying to think of how I’m going
to break it to him that two of his prized watchbeasts battled to
the death over one of those muffins. Something fishy is definitely
going on here.”
Fearing for
their jobs, the Securo Fairies retuned to their posts, trying to
stand extra still. Meanwhile, Farrah and Giuseppi were back at the
top of Mount Michelutz. The spell had worn off as they had mounted
Bella. They were about to take off when someone stepped in front of
Bella, blocking her path. Farrah squinted her eyes to block out the
dust that floated up from the ground. When the dust subsided, she
realized instantly that it was Samantha.
“Well, well,
well. What do we have here?”
Farrah glared
at Samantha, who seemed unfazed by her attempt at intimidation.
“Get lost,
Samantha, we’re just up here catching a glimpse of earth. We
thought we heard a nuclear bomb or something…”
“Don’t lie to
me!” Samantha shouted.
“I saw the
whole thing – you got into the Miracolo Cave.”
“No we
didn’t!” Responded Giuseppi as he leaned over Farrah’s shoulder to
get a better look.
“You are such
a horrible liar, Giuseppi, but that topic is for another day. Right
now, I have two questions. One, how did you make it past the Securo
Fairies and get into the vault and two, why did you want into the
cave in the first pace?”
Farrah didn’t
say a word, but her facial expression must have given something
away.
“Don’t tell me
you wanted to get your hands on some…Tooth Fairy dust?” guessed
Samantha, barely able to get out the words as she held back a
laugh.
Once again
calm, Samantha ran up to Farrah and forcefully took the pouch that
Farrah attempted to squish into her pocket, but it was too full.
Samantha undid the string and looked inside.
“Hmmmm, what
do we have here?” Samantha peeked into the pouch, being careful not
to touch the gold dust.
“Give that
back!” Shouted Farrah and she jumped off of Bella’s back and
charged Samantha.
“Ah, ah, ah,
not so fast.” Samantha had walked to the edge of the mountain and
threatened to drop it.
Fearful of
losing her prize, Farrah backed away.
“
Silly
girl, won’t you ever learn? Only Tooth Fairies can perform spells
with
this
dust, and
looking at those weeds you call wings, you are clearly no Tooth
Fairy.”
A tear formed
in the corner of Farrah’s eyes. She quickly swept it away with the
back of her wrist, not wanting to give Samantha any
satisfaction.
Unexpectedly,
Samantha threw the pouch back to Farrah. She caught it with her
left hand and held it tightly.
“Go ahead and
take the darn dust. It is useless to you- an Ordinaria anyway.
Plus, when I report this to the King, it’s better if you actually
have the evidence in your possession.”
With those
words, Samantha crouched ever so slightly before she took off
straight up into the air and instantly out of sight. Giuseppi had
joined Farrah on the ground and next to Bella. He placed a hand on
her shoulder.
“Don’t worry,
Farrah, you know that Samantha is all talk.”
Farrah sat on
the ground staring at the tiny particles of sand until it blurred
into a smear from her tears.
“I know,
Giuseppi, I know.”
As Farrah
huddled in her bed that night, she had a hard time trying to get
her heart to stop racing. After all the excitement at the Miracolo
cave and the obstacle of Samantha to deal with, getting some sleep
seemed impossible. Farrah went over the day’s events. She smiled as
she remembered the Securo Fairies with their goo stained mouths
scarfing down the enchanted muffins. Farrah also looked at her
finger with intensity. It was the same finger that she used in the
scan to get into the vault.
Is this the finger of a Tooth Fairy?
She asked silently.
While
reminiscing about the Cambiato spell that turned her and Giuseppi
into the royal King and Queen, she finally fell asleep.
The next
morning, Farrah barely went through the motions, as she helped her
parents with the baking in the kitchen. Twice, she mistook ground
dung beetle flour for pepper, which did not impress her parents.
She struggled through the entire day and then when it was 5:00, she
rushed out of the house. She hopped on Bella’s back and headed
straight for Giuseppi’s house.
Giuseppi was
sitting in his unusual spot on the lush orange lawn of his home.
Every now and then, he gazed off into the distance at a group of
fairies that were playing Calcioball. It was evident that they were
all Superiora as none had any difficulty staying afloat. As Farrah
jumped off of Bella’s back, she noticed that her friend smelled
especially fishy, even for Giuseppi.
“Pee-Whew.”
“Oh, sorry.
Dad got in a shipment of Purple Googly Whales. Those things are
huge. I’ve got fish guts everywhere,.” said Giuseppi, as he picked
some green slime out of his ears.
Farrah giggled
as she backed away from her funky smelling friend.
“That’s okay;
you just make sure you keep your distance from me today.”
“Fine.”
“So, Farrah…I
suppose you want to go back to the Tooth Fairy Training Facility to
get your Veddo,” he said, sounding reluctant.
“Actually, I
thought we’d go over to Samantha’s to see if she wants to play some
Calcioball.”
“What?” asked
a stunned Giuseppi.
“Just joking,
buddy. You guessed right the first time and we’ve got no time to
spare – it’s going to be dark soon.”
“I know,
Farrah, but what happens if Samantha does show up again?” asked
Giuseppi as he nonchalantly swatted at a silver dandelion with his
hand.
“I’m not
afraid of her,” Retorted Farrah as she hopped onto Bella’s
back.
“Are you
coming or what?”
“I am, I am,
keep your wings on!”
Back at the
training facility, the two went directly to the hidden room in the
globe-shaped building. They stood once again before the glass case
of Veddo mirrors. Neither of them talked as they stared intently.
They had no idea how they were going to extract the Veddo from the
case.
On a hunch,
Farrah took a pinch of dust from out of her pouch. It took her a
few moments to decide on a spell. When she finally did, she
sprinkled the dust on the glass window of the case.
“IOFATUTTO,”
she whispered without hesitation, out of fear that she would lose
her nerve.
In an instant,
one of the Veddos began that to shake and glow. It was the same
Veddo that did the same thing last time the two fairies were in the
room. This time it lifted higher off the shelf, hovering in mid-air
for a few seconds. Farrah’s smile was clearly reflected in the
Veddo. It slowly floated up to the glass and then mysteriously, it
floated right through and into Farrah’s hands.
“Good work
Farrah!” Said Giuseppi as he rushed over to his friend.
It was a
beautiful piece. The casing along the handle was made of a crystal
with a hint of gold. The grip was green and felt velvety soft in
Farrah’s hand as she held it. The oval shaped mirror continued to
reflect Farrah’s image until suddenly it went black.
“What
happened?” Asked Giuseppi, whose face was so close to the mirror
that it began to fog up.
“I don’t
know?”
Their eyes
were fixed on the Veddo when an image appeared. At first, it was
blurry, but after a few seconds, it had become clear. It was a
young boy. He was lying on his bed with his fingers in his mouth.
He looked to be no more than nine years old. Looking deeper at the
image, Farrah could see that the boy’s surroundings were
unpleasant. His pillow had a large rip in it. Stuffing had spilled
out onto his mattress, which was absent of any linens. There was
also a large stain at the foot of the bed. It was brown in colour
and looked kind of like a water buffalo. Water dripped onto the
boy’s head from the ceiling. Every now and then, he would remove
his hand from his mouth to wipe away droplets from his brow.
“Do you think
he’s got a loose tooth?” inquired Giuseppi as he focused on the
boy’s mouth.
Although
Farrah had heard Giuseppi’s words, she didn’t react to his
question. Instead, she was focused on something that lay on the
floor next to the human boy’s bed. It was a scarf, the very scarf
that she had seen in her vision and the very scarf that appeared in
her armoire the next morning.
“What is it
Farrah?” asked Giuseppi, noticing that his friend was lost in
thought.
“Oh,
umh…nothing,” shrugged off Farrah. She felt it best not to get into
the details of her vision again, although she did feel encouraged
that she was on the right track. Instead, she knew that there was a
lot more work to do and that is where she wanted her focus to
remain.
