Looking at them standing next to each other made me realize how much they resembled each other, but at the same time, they didn’t. With a quick glance, you wouldn’t think they were sisters. As soon as you took a deeper look, you could see the resemblance.

“Ight nigga, you up,” I told Jinx.

Jinx grabbed the stick then lined it up and sunk two balls in at once. If the girls were pouting before, they were really pouting now.

“Nazi, you got a man?” Jinx asked, wasting no time.

“Not that I know of,” she answered.

“You should just know I plan on changing that, so don’t get no other nigga fucked up.” I dapped my brother up because that was how it was done.

“One, that wasn’t a question and two, I don’t care about you fucking a nigga up. Don’t you know they line up around the block for me?” Nazi laughed.

“Niggas line up around the block, huh? I guess a nigga going to need to get some c4 and blow that block up.”

“You are some type of crazy,” Nazi said, shaking her head at him.

“You ready to answer some questions Laci?”

“Just shoot the ball.” She grinned.

I lined my shit up and only hit one ball in. It was cool with me because I only really needed to ask one question anyway.

“As you see, I got the ball in, which means I get to ask you a question,” I taunted.

“Why must you always be so extra?” she asked.

“Never extra ma. But Laci, tell me when was the last time you had sex?”

The question caught her off guard because the sip of Alize she just took was now on the floor. She quickly grabbed a napkin and wiped her mouth.

“Why would you ask me that?” she asked me.

“Because I want to know, ma. No one is going to judge you.”

“Do I really have to answer that question? You don’t want to know my age?”

“You can tell me your age if you want, but that’s not something I really want to know.”

“Laci, just answer the damn question and stop acting like a prude,” Nazi sassed.

“A year ago,” Laci said. I could tell she was slightly embarrassed because she wouldn’t look at anyone as she said it.

After answering, she went into the little eating area we had and poured herself another cup of Alize. I wanted to go over there and make sure she was okay, but that’s not what she needed. Laci was a grown ass woman embarrassed to say when the last time was that she had sex. Shit, not a lot of women could say they didn’t have sex in the last year. Instead of being embarrassed, she needed to be proud of the shit.

Jinx missed his shot and because Laci was still in the kitchen, Nazi went next. She sunk in another two balls, leaving her and Laci with only three left.

“Jinx, what is it that you do?”

“I hack shit,” he said, keeping it simple.

“What kind of shit?” she asked.

“That’s none of your business right now.”

“You have to answer the question, Jinx.”

“I did answer the question. Just because it wasn’t the answer you want to hear doesn’t mean I didn’t answer it.”

“Touché.” Nazi smiled.

“Laci, it’s your turn!” I called out.

She looked at me, then turned her attention back to the bottle of Alize. I wasn’t sure how many times I needed to tell this girl that repeating myself was something I didn’t do.

“Jinx, take Nazi to you crib,” I told him.

Neither one of them protested; they just left out. I walked right up on Laci and smacked that cup out of her hand.

“What the hell is your problem?” she asked.

“Laci, how old are you?”

“You smack my drink out my hand to ask how old I am?”

“Laci, I told you before, I don’t like repeating myself. Just answer the fucking question because all that extra shit you talking right now isn’t needed.”

“I’ll be twenty-five on the Friday coming up.”

“Ight, you a grown ass woman. The fuck are you acting up for because I asked you a question about sex?”

“Sex is something that is private for me.”

“But it’s not like I asked you to list how many sex partners you’ve had or anything like that. You turned something that was simple into something that was drastic. If you’re going to fuck with me, then you need to cut out all that dramatic shit. I’m not going to baby you because that’s the type of shit you’re used to. I’m the nigga that’s going to give it to you raw.” I moved closer to her, backing up against the wall. “Now tell me, can you handle that Laci? Can you handle the raw I’m willing to give you?”

Her breathing became heavy and her words were caught up in her throat. She looked at me with lust filled eyes, but couldn’t say the words her body was begging her to say.

“That’s exactly what I thought. Get out,” I told her and walked away.

“Wait, what?” she questioned.

“You heard what I said, get out. I can’t deal with a soon to be twenty-five-year-old that still wants to act like she’s a teenager. When you’re ready to wear your grown woman lace panties, then let me know. But right now, I’m not even fucking with you like that.”

“What is wrong with you? It’s like one minute you’re flirting with me, then the next minute you switch up. How do you expect me to act a certain way when all you do is give me mixed messages?”

“Label me bipolar.” I shrugged.

She looked at me, rolled her eyes, then stormed out. I knew for a fact she didn’t know where she was going, but she was smart enough to figure it out. Ten minutes passed and Jinx came back in the game room.

“What you do to that girl? She damn near had tears in her eyes,” he said, sitting down next to me on the couch.

“You see how you asked me what I did to that girl, that’s the problem right there. Laci is working with everything I want in a woman, but her ass has childlike tendencies, and I’m not the nigga to deal with it.”

“Man, you should have just read all the shit that I pulled up for you, then maybe you would know how to deal with her.”

“Nah, I don’t want to already know things about her; I’d rather her tell me everything I need to know. Shit, it’s bad enough I know that she’s adopted.” When I had Jinx look Laci up, I only wanted to know the basics about her. All the extra shit I wanted to hear from her.

“I feel you because I’m the same way about Nazi. That night at the club, her mouth was running like a faucet. She told me all about how she and Laci are adopted, and how they aren’t real sisters, along with a whole bunch of other shit.”

“You see how easy it was for Nazi to open up to you, that’s what I want with Laci, but her ass plays all day.”

“She’s not the only one playing. You playing with shawty’s head too. If you’re into shawty, then you need to let her know. Not every chick is going to do you the way Milani did.”

“I’m not worried about her fucking me over like Milani did because Laci’s not even the type. I’m worried about her not being able to accept my lifestyle. You know how we get down and any chick we fuck with has to have tough skin. Right now, Laci is fragile and I need to make sure she’s worth going on that journey. When I take things there with her, shit isn’t going to be a cake walk, and I need to know that she’s not going to run out on a nigga every time the going gets tough.”

“You won’t know until you take that step with her.  From what Nazi says, Laci is cool; she just always put herself into her work, so that’s all she really knows.”

“Don’t worry, I got this,” I told him.

For the rest of the night, we chilled and finished the wings that I cooked. He was right about one thing; I wouldn’t know until I stepped to Laci. For now, I was going to give her the space she needed to get her head right.

Chapter 7: Gunz

“Finally, my lovely children have arrived,” my mother said, holding the door open for Jinx, Jiselle, and me.

“Hey mom,” Jiselle said, giving her a quick hug.

Jinx and I just walked in and went for the dining room. Where my mother came short in love and affection, she made up for it in cooking. Rose could cook her ass off and she made sure all her kids knew how to cook to. She didn’t want us depending on anyone for anything, including her and my father.

“Wassup pops?” Jinx dapped our father up and I followed suit.

My mother came in the dining room soon after, taking her seat at the head of the table opposite of my father. Jiselle sat across from Jinx and me with a smirk on her face. I was still feeling some type of way about her bringing that bitch Milani to my crib. Friend or not, that bitch was supposed to get cut off the minute Jiselle knew what happened. I loved my sister to death but a part of me felt as though she knew Milani was cheating on me. The day I found out that she knew, there would be hell to pay. Blood was thicker than water, it was as simple as that.

“As you all know, this Sunday dinner is something that we have been doing for a while. Sunday dinner is usually about business, but today it’s something different. I’m tired of only spending time with my family when it has something to do with business. We are a family and we should start acting like one. Everyone dig in and we will go around the table saying what is new in each other’s lives.” My mother smiled.

Jinx and I looked at each other, then looked at our pops. All he did was nod his head. I thought the shit was strange, but I wasn’t going to speak on it. We passed the dishes around, piling our plates up with food. Once all the plates were made, my father said grace, then we all dug in. I was devouring the baked mac and cheese, cabbage, sweet potatoes, and turkey wings that were on my plate, when my mother began talking.

“Bryce, why don’t you go first, seeing how you are the oldest,” my mother suggested.

“There’s not much to tell, all I do is handle business. Business is my life, that’s all I have time for.”

“Bryce, why are you trying to be modest?” Jiselle began. “Tell her about your new lady friend.”

“Oh, you’re dating someone?” my mother asked with a raised eyebrow.

“No, I’m not dating anyone. After fucking with that bitch Milani, no other chick is worth my time,” I lied because I didn’t need my mother in my business. Let me rephrase that because when it came to my business, my mother knew just about everything. I didn’t need her knowing my personal business.

“Bryce, watch your mouth at my dinner table,” my father spoke.

“I just call them how I see them.” I shrugged. My father was a man of few words, but he wasn’t one to be tested. I didn’t give no fucks, but my father took that shit to a whole different level.

“This is supposed to be a loving experience, not a bickering one. Jinx, what about you, what’s going on in your life?”

“Shit,” Jinx replied, keeping it simple.

“Come on now, I know you have to be up to something.”

“Nah.”

“Well, since no one else wants to speak, I guess I will share what’s been going on in my life.” Jiselle smiled. “Lately, I have been trying to open up more and change my bitchy ways, so I’m taking a pottery class.”

Without even a single thought, I busted out laughing. Jiselle taking pottery classes was the funniest thing to me. I didn’t believe she could create because she was so destructive. Killing and destroying things was her forte.

“Did I say something that was funny?” she asked. Her hands were no longer visible on the table, and I already knew what that meant.

“Yeah. No one else found that shit funny?” I laughed again.

Jiselle let out a low chuckle of her own before throwing her knife at me. I leaned back in my chair, dodging the knife and falling to the floor. The knife that was meant to stab me was stuck in the wall. I jumped up with my guns drawn, ready for action.

“Jiselle, you trying to inflict harm on a nigga all because I laughed. You getting real emotional; you sure you’re not going through menopause,” I smirked.

“Bryce, put the guns down!” my mother yelled.

“That’s enough!” my father shouted, standing up.

I put my guns away and eased back into my chair. Jiselle and I fighting wasn’t nothing out of the ordinary. We got into it at least three times a month. We would go through our shit, then be fine the next day.

“I raised you kids better than this. Now, apologize before I send all of you to the fucking hospital with a flesh wound!” my mother shouted, sitting her own gun on the table.

“My bad,” I said, keeping it short and sweet.

“I’m sorry,” Jiselle sighed.

“Your mother called all three of you over here to try something different. I told her this wouldn’t be a good idea because we didn’t raise y’all on Sunday dinners. We raised y’all to get money and keep the eye on the prize. We taught you how to utilize your skills, so you wouldn’t have to ever work for anyone else. We taught y’all how to be self-made bosses. If any of you want that loving caring family, then I suggest you start your own because this family right here isn’t about that shit. We are a family about business and power. Our name, Carter, rings bells in the streets. With the way y’all have behaved, I don’t even want to see any of you right now. I had a job for the three of you, but it’s gonna have to wait until next Sunday. Now, tell your mother you love her and get the fuck out my house,” my father ordered before walking away from the table.

“Don’t mind your father, he is just stressed out about some business things,” my mother said, trying to smooth out the situation.

“Bye ma, I love you,” Jiselle said, getting up and kissing her before walking out the room.

“I love you,” Jinx and I said at the same time, then left out behind Jiselle.

I didn’t care what anyone said, our family was fucked up. Before things went south with Laci, I had plans on bringing her to Sunday dinner, but I was glad I didn’t. She would have seen how we behaved and probably would have run. Speaking of Laci, I needed to get things ready for her birthday. She had four more days to get her shit together because come Friday, my name would be forever etched on her heart.
