Right after the imperial headquarters conference ended, Hirohito reportedly told Sugiyama, “I was thinking of bestowing an imperial rescript if they could recapture Guadalcanal. What do you think? The officers and men fought hard and suffered. So why not grant them an imperial rescript. If I do grant one, when would be the best time?” The rescript was granted on January 5, 1943, but not publicized. See Boei Kensh
