“Could we change the topic?” I asked. I really wasn't eager to talk about death when I was actually that person, who had the first hand of experience what it meant to be dead.
“Of course,” he nodded quickly. He also didn't like to talk about death. So, why did he even start this topic? “About what would you like to talk?” he asked, taking a cookie in his hand, but he didn't hurry to put it into his mouth.
Really,
what could we talk
about
? I asked myself in my mind. Every topic which crossed my mind seemed so pointless. The only thing which I really wanted, was to feel his touch, his body's warm. Dammit, I was in really serious problem here.
“I don't know,” I said in the end.
“Maybe we could talk about ourselves?” he suggested.
I nodded. It was still better than nothing.
“I am Vanessa. I am eighteen years old. My parents are...dead. I am the only child in the family. My legal guardian is Avery. I like writing, reading...” I was telling him the same thing
,
which he maybe
had
heard before, but I didn't care.
“You are not from around here,” he said, locking his eyes with mine. I lost the capability to breath. I really needed to turn my face to see something else, but his blue eyes didn't want to let me go. “Where did you use to live?”
“Everywhere,” I answered. “I really don't want to talk about my past,” and that was the true, because that past didn't belong to me now. I was a new person, if it was even possible.
“Okay, I won't push you,” he said sincerely and I believed him. “I am Tobias and I am eighteen too, but soon I will be nineteen. I have both parents, but they live in
Munich
. My mother is from
Lithuania
while my father is from
Germany
,” hearing that fact suddenly forced my brain to work. But really, that was only a coincidence. After all, many people from
Lithuania
moved to live in
Germany
where they created families. Nothing new and nothing special. So, why did that fact forced my skin to turn into goosebumps? “I decided to study the English language and literature... I don't really know why. It just felt so right when I was choosing what studies I should take. My parents don't really approve my decision. They thought...” he stopped and turned his eyes away from me, like he didn't want me to read something on his face. “In the end they accepted my choice.”
“And why did you decide to study in this city?” I asked, suddenly curious how he really had ended here, in the city in which I was.
“I don't know really,” he smirked to himself and came closer to the window, lost in his own thoughts. “I just got an invitation from this city's university and accepted it. How I could see now, I did the right decision,” he turned
around
and rewarded me with the warmest smile I had ever seen.
“And about Agnes?” I didn't let this time for my emotions to control me. I wanted to understand what was happening,. Right now I only understood that Christopher and Avery had some kind of power in this world, or at least that society in which they belonged.
“Agnes? Well, our parents know each other since I was a baby. Agnes is like a sister to me. When I was twelve years old, her parents moved from
Munich
. I didn't keep in touch with her for some years.”
“She seems to like you,” I said, taking another cookie.
He looked at me and rolled his eyes. With two huge steps he approached to me, putting his hand on my cheek in order to lift my eyes. Before I could even say something or do something, his lips touched mine, forcing mine to split. And when they did, I felt his tongue in my mouth deepening our kiss.
A small voice started screaming in my mind, telling me that I didn't know him well, that we should stop a pause button and take things slowly, that I wasn't that kind of person, who would let a man kiss me after meeting with him three times. But I couldn't force myself to walk away from him even if I knew that it was a bad thing for us to do.
“Are you jealous?” he whispered in my ear when she broke our kiss. His arms snaked around me, pulling me closer to him.
“What?” I asked when I finally understood that he was waiting for my response.
“I am really glad that I chose to come here,” he planted a kiss on my lips one more time, but this one was really short and simple. I wanted for him to repeat that deep kiss.
“Me too,” I heard myself saying.
He touched my cheek with his fingers' ends, but they didn't have much time to run on my skin, because soon his phone released a terrible sound. He removed his fingers and took a step back as he pulled out his phone. The name on the screen didn't bring a smile on his face, giving me the clue that a person, who was calling to him, wasn't his favorite person in this world.
“I must go,” he said, pouting. He pushed the button and put his phone back to his pocket. Only then he slowly lifted his head up to see my face expression, which was blank.
“Yea, of course,” I said reluctantly.
I leaded him to the front door. Neither he nor I spoke during our short trip, but I felt his unwillingness to leave me.
“See you tomorrow during the lectures,” he said, touching my forehead with his soft and warm lips, which managed to become my ambrosia today.
“Okay,” I nodded and tried to put a small smile on my face, proving him that everything was okay, that his leaving wasn't so bad.
He took the last good look at me and walked away, leaving me to stand next to the door and stare at him until the wall hid him from my eager eyes.
I heaved a sight. Everything was really happening to quickly, without giving me some time to understand everything and make a decision, what I should do next.
I closed the door and walked slowly to my room, thinking only about those amazing kisses. He really knew how to kiss. And jealousy touched my mind. He had kissed someone else and I wanted to strangle those girls, who had opportunity to touch his lips. At least he saved from this emotion, because he was the first, who touch my lips.
Chapter thirteen
The alarm clock forced me to open my eyes and meet a new day. I yawned and turned on another side. I hated those things. Even during eighteen years they managed to remain.
“Wake up, sleeping beauty,” I heard Avery's cheerful voice.
I moaned, taking quickly one of many pillows on my bed and putting it on my head. Avery burst into laugh, but I didn't care. She could even died from laugh if she wanted. I didn't care.
“You will be late for your first lecture,” she took a seat on my bed and gently put her hand on my body, rolling me that I would leave the dream land quicker. But I didn't want to wake up.
“Call things with their true names,” I snapped as I removed the pillow from my head.
“Okay,” Avery rolled her eyes and smirked. “You will have less time to be with your soulmate.”
I didn't know how, but she knew what had happened between me and him, while I was alone with him. It really sucked. Also, it scared me. Was she a psychic? Or maybe there were some secret cameras installed in my room?
“He is sweet,” I said in dreamy voice after some minutes. “And he his kisses are great,” I added.
“And that would be a motivation for you to leave this bed,” Avery stood up and approached my wardrobe. “So, what should you were today?” she said out loud and stole a glance at me. I shrugged. “I think that violate would make its trick,” she took a violate shirt and threw it to me, ”and... yea, and white pants. Of course, some necklace,” she said. I rolled my eyes and slowly stood up from my bed. I didn't care what Avery was doing. If it was important for her, I would let her do whatever she wanted until it wasn't cosmetic.
I strode quickly from my room into the bathroom without even looking where I went. And what you know, I hit a solid, warm and...naked chest. In other words, Christopher. He also was leading to the bathroom.
He actually smiled when he saw my confused and read face from embarrassment. Why was I blushing? After all, it wasn't my first time to see some kind of guys naked chest...
“You should wear more clothes,” I said as I turned my eyes away from that gorgeous and muscular chest which was asking to be touched by my fingers. Really, why did he have such an effect on me?
“And you should pay more attention at where you are going,” he looked over my shoulder to see Avery studying many necklaces in her hands, trying to decided which one would suit me more.
“Yea,” I said and carefully walked around him, trying to avoid to see his naked chest, but it was impossible task. My eyes saw only Christopher's great body. My cheeks only grew hotter. “I am going there,” I pointed quickly to the door and before something really shameful could happen, I ran into the room and closed the door behind me with a thud.
Really, why that had such a huge effect on me? I asked myself in my mind and sighed. I even started wondering what my cheeks would feel when I see Tobias's naked chest. My imagination loosed on that, turning my body into one hot bonfire. And it was only some images!
I shook my head, trying to push away those tempting images from my mind. I should concentrate on... toothpaste... water... Yea, that was what I should think about. I grabbed my toothbrush, trying to remember what I should do with that thing.
“Hey, you should hurry up,” I heard Christopher's mocking voice behind the door. I glanced at it; still shut, still alone. And still seeing his naked chest in my mind, which really didn't help me to do what I had to.
“Yea, I should,” I said to myself in a whisper.
Somehow I managed to cleaned my teeth and plashed some water one my face to look like I ready
was doing
something in the bathroom than imaging, how wonderful would be to let my fingers run on his naked chest.
“Done?” he asked amused, seeing my red cheeks.
I nodded and I scampered back to my room, ordering myself in my mind not to glance at him, but it was easy said than done. I steal glanced at him, letting my eyes meet his and see something warm in them.
“Finally,” Avery's voice brought me back to the reality. “Here,” she waved her hand for me to look at my bed on which were lying my new clothes with some jewels on them. “I think you will look awesome in them,” she said pleased with her job.
I had to admit, I really liked what she had created. She had a talent for that or a good sense, what matched and what not.
“Thank you,” I said to her and she smiled. “I really like it,” she bit her lip like a teenager and pull me into a hug. I was really surprised by her behavior right now.
“Don't mention it,” she let me go and left me alone in my room to get change my clothes.
Really, what that supposed to mean? I asked myself mentally. In my mind Avery was a person, who knew how to push my buttons, who was always serious and boring, but right now...she seemed like a small child, who was relaxed and enjoying herself.
I changed my clothes and took my purse with my laptop. Then I walked out from my room, meeting my protector and tutor in the dining room.
I took a seat and looked at my plate. Lucky for me, no salads today. Anna had made me some pancakes. I grinned. Normal food, I said in my mind as I started eating.
“Avery will bring you to school,” Christopher said.
I nodded, too afraid to say something. I felt how my cheeks started changing their colors. Dammit that naked chest image!
“She will also bring you back,” he continued. Another nod. “Then you will stay at home, where is safe for you.”
I didn't nod at that and dared to meet his eyes.
“When will I be able to leave the flat?” I asked irritated. I wanted to have some freedom and really look around the city, do some shopping and so on.
“You can't while your soul isn't connect with your soulmate,” he explained. That connecting thing was a new thing. They hadn't mentioned anything about me having to connect with Tobias. But wait a minute, what kind of connection we were talking
about
?
Avery read the question in my mind.
“Not marriage,” she said casually. “The only thing to connect souls that they couldn't separate and be safe from the hunters, is to...” she stopped and glanced at Christopher, who was avoiding her eyes for some reason,” is to spend some interesting time in bed,” she finished.
I lifted up one eyebrow.
“You mean to make love?” I asked confused.
She nodded vigorously.
“When you have sex, we will be free and you will be...safe. The hunters are only interested in lovely souls, not in the connected souls.
“Why sex?” I asked. Now I didn't need to see in my mind Christopher’s naked chest, because the word sex did its magic. I was a virgin and topics like this... well, they really had some kind of effect one me.
“Because it is the
pure
st
way to express your feelings,” she answered.
I opened my eyes widely.
“You are joking,” I said after some minutes. ”Sex,” I said in disgust. “Many people
do
that with...”
