ead Ruth 3 meditatively. This can be a troublesome passage if we don’t give it sufficient thought. As we pointed out in
Living By the Book,
some people read this portion of Scripture and respond with winks and elbow pokes, suggesting that Ruth acted inappropriately (p. 243).

Later on you’ll be asked to consult other references to see what is taking place culturally. But for now, meditate on Ruth 3 (as well as other portions of the book) and see what you can learn about the people involved. Your assignment is a single essay question: When Ruth washed, dressed in her best clothes, and sneaked out to see Boaz in the middle of the night, do you think it was to sleep with him?
