This book is dedicated to all the broken hearts who have had the privilege of knowing what it means to truly love. It is also dedicated to those who have truly loved another individual, yet in their human frailty have failed that person.

EPILOGUE

To Brian,

In your youth, you gave me your strength,
And you gave me a promise that was to last a lifetime.
In your heart you pledged to yourself that you would always
Love me, respect me, protect me and take care of me.
And you worked very hard to make all of this come true.
In midlife once you failed me, but then you redeemed yourself.
You faced your failure with courage, you did not run away.
In my struggle to understand, you granted me honesty,
And you never ran from the pain.
To you, I was worth the work of rebuilding, and you gave to me tirelessly, more than any man could ever be expected to give. Now as together we live the second half of our lives, You have won all of my admiration and all of my respect. Now you have made my dreams come true.
The thing that you worked so hard to achieve, you have achieved. I trust you completely.
The greatest man of all is the man who is willing for this story to be told, that others may be helped.
You are my best friend, my lover, the father of my children. You are strong, intelligent, romantic, and full of humor. You are my man of steel and of velvet.
If I had my life to live over, I would marry you all over again,
Even if I could see the future. It’s all been worth it.
You have made me very happy. Thank you for an amazing life.

Anne

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

In the past, I have always wondered why authors go to such extremes to thank their family members in their books. Now I understand. Writing this book has been a huge undertaking.

When asked to speak at a marriage seminar recently, our host commented that he had been looking so forward to meeting Brian, because, he said, he knew he would be meeting one of the most courageous men he’d ever met. That’s the truth. It takes an exceptional individual to share failure publicly. Brian has been my number one cheerleader throughout this project. This book could not have been written without his encouragement and support.

I would also like to thank my three exceptional children, Danielle, Dustin and Tamara for their patience and sacrifices, during the many months it took me to write. (And for putting up with roast chicken and bagged salad more times than they care to remember.) I commend them also for their willingness to share such a personal family story with the world, so that others can be helped. I am very proud of all three of them.

Especially, I want to thank Danielle for not only sharing so much of herself with the world, but for writing pieces for the book, which offer readers a unique perspective into another side of affairs. It is our hope that her contributions will inspire hope for the many overlooked teenagers in the world, whose parents are struggling with similar challenges.

So many people have participated in my vision to make this book a reality. Writing a book like this one is not like writing other books.

When stepping out of the ordinary, and talking about subjects normally considered taboo, one’s personal network of support becomes essential. I therefore want to thank our friends for cheering us on and being there for us during this writing endeavor: Jacques and Judy Belzile, Sean and Heather Upshaw, Victor and Alanna Klassen, Doug and Karin Elrick, Kevin and Annabel

Bessenger, Lindsay Brooks and Adrian Lee.

Margot Silk Forrest has been my writing coach. Her professional insight and experience, coupled with kindness, wisdom and encouragement have assisted me in bringing to paper the truth about the events that transpired in my life.
