Four weeks later, Zoey and I are sitting across from Writer, in a bundle of nerves, waiting for the audiologist. We grip each others’ hands tightly as the door opens and in walks Doctor Torea. He is an older man with salt and pepper colored hair. Not too tall or short, with a belly tucked into his shirt but hanging over his slacks.

He looks at both of us with a gentle smile and holds out his hand for each of us to shake. After I release my hand from his, he goes to sit in front of Writer and starts to sign.
Hi Jaxon, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Doctor Torea and I am the follow up doctor for your cochlear.
They shake hands before he continues.
It says here on your chart it has been one month since you got the cochlear. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct,
Writer answers with a nod of his head, the nervousness pouring off of him. I know he wants this so much and I want it for him. I hope to God it works, he’ll be devastated if it doesn't.

The doctor goes on to explain further.
Today we are going to activate your cochlear. There are wires that go from my computer that I will hook up to your device. Once everything is set up, I will adjust the level as we go, but when you hear my voice, I want you to tell me, got it?

Writer looks over to me and I give him an encouraging nod.
Sugar, move your chair up here in front of me. I need you close.
He focuses back on the doctor while I move my chair, bringing Zoey with me so I don't miss anything. Writer tells the doctor,
I got it. I'm ready.

I watch as the doctor sits at the table, messing with his computer. His mouth moves and all of a sudden Writer's expression changes. Pure joy and happiness radiate off of him while the smile spreads across his face then his mouth moves. I look at Zoey, who has tears in her eyes and a smile matching his. My sister signs to me,
He can hear Ever! It worked!

I blankly stare at her as I take it in.
It worked? He can really hear?
I ask, needing the reassurance. Zoey keeps the smile as she wipes away a tear then nods. Turning my attention back to Writer,
Baby?
I question. He smiles and nods.

I drop my face into my hands as the tears spill out of me. In an instant I feel hands on my thighs, I uncover my face then grab the Kleenex Zoey has reached out for me. I look down to Writer, who is on his knees in front of me his face full of worry, eyes shining with unshed tears.
Sugar, what's wrong? Are you okay?

Nothing's wrong, I'm just so happy for you. You can hear Writer!
All of my jealousy, doubts or any other way I was feeling, wash away except for true elated happiness.

I can!
His head drops into my lap as his shoulders shake. I run my hand through his soft brown hair then bend forward, wrapping him in my arms while we both cry tears of happiness.

After everyone calms down, Writer takes his seat again as the audiologist goes through colors and numbers with him. Zoey said the reason Dr. Torea was using a card to cover his mouth was so that Writer could repeat back the answers as Dr. Torea said them. She said he got all of them right and I am so goddamn proud of him.

After spending the last few hours in Dr. Torea's office, we pull up into our next stop and Writer shuts off Ghost's SUV. We walk into the doctor's clinic that both my sister and Jacey went to when they were pregnant. I look around at the lobby with just a couple other pregnant ladies waiting. The room has a warm relaxing feel to it, with it's eggshell painted walls, maroon chairs, and the maroon, black, and white rug on the floor that fits perfectly. If you stare at the circles too long in the rug, the damn thing will make you dizzy.

Zoey helps me check in, then we sit and wait until the pretty little nurse calls me back. She has me sit on the table in the little room where she takes my blood pressure, checks my temperature, and then asks me a ton of questions. Zoey relays all the answers back to her while she writes everything in my chart. The nurse gets up, walks out, and closes the door behind her. Back to waiting.

Why do these exam rooms never have clocks in them? I don't know how long we have been sitting here waiting when finally the door starts to open and in walks the beautiful red headed Dr. Greene. After she checks me out, she has me lay on my back where she stands above me. She lifts my shirt up to where it tucks under my breasts and then undoes my jeans, pulling them down just a little. She then puts some gel on my lower stomach, which is cold as shit and has me shivering for a minute.

Dr. Greene places a wand on my lower abdomen then moves it around a little before stopping. I watch as her smile grows wider and wider, then feel a hand take mine. I look over to see Writer standing on my other side with what can only be described as awe.

When I sent a text asking Dr. Greene if she could get us in today, I was so happy that she would. I wanted this day to be monumental for Writer, and I think I succeeded in that.
Do you hear it?
I ask him. He looks down at me with a sad smile.

I can hear it. It is the most beautiful sound in the world, Sugar. I wish you could hear it.

Me too.
Both of our eyes fill with tears. Boy, this has been one hell of an emotional day.

He takes my hand, pulling it up to his chest and laying it over his heart. He holds my pointer finger and middle finger then works a beat against his chest it's soft, fast and little thumps. This is his way of showing me what the heartbeat of our baby sounds like.

Dr. Greene then turned out the lights, turned on a machine, put more gel on my stomach, and used a different wand. Dr. Greene said usually she waits for this part until you are further along, but since I am only ten weeks, we can't find out the sex. She said under these circumstances, she wanted us to be able to share this.

Together we watch the screen intently as we see our baby for the first time.

Somebody Like You by Keith Urban

SEVEN MONTHS LATER

“We have a spotting on the Four Kings. They are hiding out in a rundown house outside of Topeka. Have been for awhile now and heard they are trying to bring in new members along with prospects. They are trying to build back up, with Deuce as their president,” Hanger starts filling in everyone on the new developments of those filthy cunts that kidnapped our women.

They were hiding out for too long, having us just sitting around waiting for some shit to go down. It sounds like they are biding their time, waiting for their worthless fuckin' club to gain the numbers they need to try and take us down again.

Gunner jumps in when Hanger stops. “We think it would be best to put someone in undercover try and get in good with them. It has to be someone that Deuce has never seen so he doesn't suspect anything.” We all look around the room, knowing he has seen most of us.

The newest prospect, Tink, chimes in. “I'll do it.”

“You sure about that, prospect? It could turn sour real quick, then what are you gonna do?”

“I'll do what I gotta do for the club,” Tink says, so matter of fact. All of us patched members look at one another, thinking the exact same thing: kids got heart, but is it such a good idea sending him in by himself?

“Alright, but I don't want you in there by yourself. I'll call Bones and see if he has one of his guys to spare. Let's take a vote. All in favor of Tink going undercover.” Hanger gives it to him straight and the “Aye's” sound out around the room. Hanger slams the gavel down. “Alright, unanimous vote. You're going in, Tink. I want you heading out tomorrow as long as we have someone else with you. Onto the next...”

My phone starts ringing loudly throughout the room. I look at Hanger, giving him a silent apology. He knew I wasn't going to have my phone on silent when Ever is two weeks overdue. I dig it out of my pocket and furrow my brows seeing that it is Shug.

“Shug, what's up everything alright?”

“Um. No, not really I think you should get to the store now, like, in a hurry.”

“Why, what's wrong?” I ask, already up on my feet. I look around the room. “I gotta get to the store, something's wrong,” I tell the guys. As soon as I say the words, my brothers are out of their seats right behind me, heading out of the club.

“Ever showed up and well, she was just standing there and then her water broke.” Jesus. Fuck.

“Alright Shug I want you to hang up and call 911 I'll go straight to the hospital.”

I start my chopper and the rumbling vibrates under me. I don't take the time to tell my brothers where I am going they can just keep up and follow me.

Five hours later, I have a bundled up baby Xandor in my arms. Ever tried to breastfeed, but he wasn’t latching on properly so I just got done feeding him a bottle. I look down at his beautiful face to see he is sleeping so I walk over, laying X down in his little baby bed the nurses brought him in on. He is so little, wrapped up like a burrito in the duck blanket with his blue and white hat on. I walk back over to the bed, taking a seat.
He's perfect, Ever. So fucking beautiful. You are amazing, you know that?

Thank you, Babe. He is perfect, isn't he? I love you so much and thank you for giving me him and you.

We did it together. I love you too, Sugar.
I kiss the top of her head and vow to myself that I will do everything in my power to protect and love these two until my last breath.

EVER

SIX WEEKS LATER

★★★

Writer and I got married when I was about five months along. We didn't want the whole big wedding like my sister did. That's never been us. So we went to the courthouse, just him and, I then we had a big party afterwards for our families.

So here we are six weeks after Xander was born, sitting in our chairs, bouncing our knees uncontrollably. I spin my wedding ring around my finger because I am so fucking nervous. I look at my husband. His head is in his hands, elbows on knees, and fingers gripping his hair tightly. I can't keep my eyes in one place for long so I try focusing on the wall.

We wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Then, in an instant, my whole life has changed. “Ever? Sugar, can you hear me?” My eyes shoot to the doctor and then to Writer. I watch as his lips move in front of my face. I can hear him! I can hear my husband. When I told Writer that I wanted to get the implant, we had to wait until Xandor was born. He immediately started teaching me more lip reading so with him repeating his words, I know what he is saying. The sobs and tears are uncontrollable, causing me to hide my face with my hands as my shoulders shake.

Writer's hand grips mine tightly as he holds out a Kleenex. I take it, wiping my eyes, and look to Dr. Torea.

“I can hear him.”

My speech is slurred, but I have a voice, one I can hear. They told me that my speech will get better over time, but I have one to two years of therapy to help me. Plus, my family and husband to let me know all the sounds and connecting words to say them.
