Ava stared down at her plate and
moved her folded arms on the table in front of her.

“You’re not going to make this
easy, are you?” he asked.

“What do you want me to say
Trent? What’s done is done.”

He noticed her eyes swell up with
tears, but Ava quickly tried to push through her sorrowful moment. “Are you
still doing it?”

Ava groaned. “Here we go again.”

“No Ava. I ask because I want to
help you get out of it. Paula told me you quit working for her several months
ago. You didn’t have to leave on my account. That was a great job, Ava.”

“Not everything is about you
now.”

Trent rubbed his hand down his
face. “What are your plans now that you’ve graduated?”

This time, Ava looked up at him
and proudly disclosed. “I’m moving next week.”

Stunned, Trent replied, “Where?”

“I don’t think it matters
anymore. Like I said earlier, what’s done is done.”

“I don’t want us to be enemies,
Ava,” he said, reaching out to touch her hand.

Ava pulled her hand back quickly
fighting the spark she felt when their skin touched. “I gotta go. My bus will
be here any minute.”

“What happened to your car?” he
asked.

Ava shrugged while placing her
book inside her tote bag. “I got rid of it.
Too expensive to
maintain.
Bus fare is cheaper.”

Then Ava pushed up out of her
seat.

Trent glanced down at her stomach
before looking back up at her face. The sight of her protruding belly sickened
him. With a sneer, he asked, “Occupational hazard?”

Ava stopped long enough to prepare
to slap him, but instead she allowed the tears she held onto to fall before she
brushed past him. “Fuck you, Trent.”

He watched her pace quicken as
she pushed her way out the door and past several people. “Ava! Wait up! Wait!”

The bus pulled up in front of her
at the bus stop. When the doors opened, she went to take her first step when
she finally stopped long enough to look back at him.

Trent lightly jogged up to her,
intent on stopping her. “I shouldn’t have said that.”

She turned away. Realizing she
was blocking the entrance, Ava stepped aside, but signaled to the driver to
wait for her.

“What do you want Trent?”

“After all that happened, I
deserve to know one thing.” He glanced down at her stomach and wondered if he
really wanted to know the answer. Hell, did she even know the answer herself. “Whose
is it?”

Ava looked up into his face and
contemplated if she should even bother answering his question. Finally, she
reached for the handrail so she could step up into the bus before looking back
over her shoulder. “Yours.”
