“Then we grab as many groceries bags as we can. And run over to you with the food.”
“Good, now let’s get ready to go.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You see that man right there?” I asked them as we hid on the side of the Safeway grocery store. “When he goes for his truck, rush over there and grab the groceries out of his cart.”
“Ma, I don’t wanna do this.” Jayden cried. “I’m scared.”
“I don’t give a fuck what you want to do!” I said slapping her upside her head. “I bet your ass wanna eat don’t you?” Jayden nodded yes. “I know that! And since you wanna eat, you betta get your ass over there and get that food.”
“Ma, I can do it by myself,” Madjesty said. “She ain’t got to go with me. She’ll probably slow me down anyway.”
She thought I was stupid. Madjesty never talked badly about her sister. She was trying to make me think she could do the shit by herself when I knew we needed two hands to pull this job off. The object was always to get as much food as possible.
“Naw, she need to go with you!” I looked at Jayden and smacked her in the face. “Now get your ass over there and help your sister!”
This is why I didn’t want girls, they too fucking sassy and weak. If they didn’t do what I wanted done, they were gonna pay for it dearly when we got back home. And I’m not even fucking around.
Once the man walked to his car, they ran over to his cart. I backed up further on the side so that no one would see me. Madjesty grabbed two bags and Jayden grabbed one.
“Bitch, get back over there and get another bag,” I demanded from Jayden. “You got two hands, so use ‘em!”
She ran back and grabbed another bag and they were almost by me when someone who didn’t have shit to do with it yelled, “Sir, they’re stealing your groceries!”
The man saw them stealing his bags and started running in our direction. And I was so caught up into making sure they did the plan correctly, that I didn’t see the cop a few feet from them.
“Stop!” the cop yelled. “Stop right where you are!”
The man whose groceries they’d stolen followed the cop and my kids. They were all running in my direction. I didn’t know what to do so I had to act fast. So I ran up to them and smacked Madjesty in her face and then Jayden.
“What the fuck are ya’ll doing stealing from this man?” I asked looking down at them. They looked at each other confused at my reaction. “Huh…Answer my fucking question!”
“Ma,” Madjesty started, “you told us…”
I smacked her harder and her lips bled.
“I asked you a fucking question!” I said looking down at her. “Why in the fuck would you steal from this man? Are you that fucking hungry you gotta steal?”
The cop and the man looked at me in kids in pity and I knew my plan was working. I hoped the cop would feel too badly for my kids to prosecute and the man would be too afraid of what I was going to do to them to make matters worse.
“Now I’ma ask you again, why in the fuck were you stealing from this nice man?” I asked Jayden.
“I don’t know, ma” she said in a low voice. I could barely hear her because she was sniffling so much from crying. “But I’m sorry and it won’t happen again.”
“Sir, what do you want to do?” I paused looking at the man and then my kids with hate. “Because I’m perfectly willing to do whatever I have to do make this right, including marching them right down to the police station with you.”
Madjesty and Jayden looked at me scared. The officer looked at them and then at me. Suddenly, he didn’t look like he wanted to arrest them anymore.
“No…Mam, I think we can let you handle things from here,” the officer said. “That is, as long as it’s okay with you, sir.”
The man looked at how frightened my kids were and agreed not to press charges. We gave him back the groceries and went home. Once back in the house I had no idea what we would eat. I hated them for putting me into this situation by getting caught. Once we were inside, we sat on the couch and looked at one another.
“So what are we gonna eat now?” Madjesty asked looking at me with a smirk on her face. “’Cause we did all that shit for nothing and we still hungry.”
I can’t explain the rage that came over me. I picked up whatever was next to me and it happened to be a lamp. Once it was in my hand, I cracked it over her head until it shattered at our feet. Blood gushed from the sides of her face and she fell to the floor. I knew I was wrong but the anger wouldn’t allow me to apologize. These kids have taken everything from me. My dreams, my hopes and my life and now she wants to talk back to me?
Being tired of looking at her, I drug her by her shirt and threw her into the crawl space under the stairs. I used this crawl space a lot when I was younger. It helped me feel as if I was escaping whenever I was home alone with Estelle. Once she was inside, I locked it from the outside.
“I hate you! I hate you, bitch! I hope you die! Why did you bring us into the world if you hated us so fuckin’ much?!!!!” Madjesty cursed me.
“Why don’t you think about that while you spend the next five days in there.”
“Mama, please,” Jayden cried walking up to me. “Please don’t put her in there. She doesn’t mean to be disrespectful. She’s just scared and hungry.”
“Yes I do mean what I said, Jayden! I hate that bitch and I hope she dies!”
I once wished the person I thought was my mother died, and she eventually did. Thinking of that made me angrier.
“Madjesty, please! Stop! Ma is gonna think you’re serious. Tell her you’re sorry.”
“Do you realize everything I gave up for you?!” I yelled at the crawl space.
“Yes, mama. I do.” Jayden cried taking me by the hand. “And we love you for it. But please…Please don’t do my sister like this.”
“That’s all you care about is your fucking sister! What about me?!” It made me mad that she kept talking about Madjesty. “Do you realize the life I had when I was here? I had a father who loved me, more than anything.” I cried.
“I understand, mama. But…But…What can I do to make things easier for you?” When she asked me what she could do to make things easier for me, I felt an ounce of love in my heart for her. And then she said, “What can I do to make you not leave my sister under there?”
I could see the desperation in her eyes so I decided to push the envelope. It was obvious that they had each other and I was alone.
I wiped the tears off my face and said, “If you want that little bitch to come out, then go get me some money. As a matter of fact, I don’t want to ever have to worry about getting money ever again. That will be your job for now on.”
“But…I don’t know where we are.” She whimpered.
“We are in Maryland.” I said coldly.
“I know, mama, but I don’t know my way around here. I’ma get lost.”
“Maybe I will keep her there longer.” I laughed. “It don’t make me no never mine. I’m tired of seeing her face anyway. It will be one less mouth I have to feed.”
“Mama, please don’t. She…she may die.”
“Well until you go out there and get my money, your ungrateful ass sister will stay under them stairs. And if I got to work extra hard to get some money myself, then you gonna go under there with her. Do I make myself clear, Jayden?”
“Yes.” She sobbed. “Yes you do, mama.”
“And I’m not talking about a couple of bucks either, Jayden. I’m talking about no less than one hundred dollars. That’ll be enough to get us started.”
She looked scared but I didn’t care. I handed her a jacket because it was October and the temperatures could be frigid at night. I didn’t want her to have any excuses for coming back broke. With the jacket in her hand, I pushed her outside of the mansion and locked the door behind her. I started fucking when I was twelve and she was fourteen. What better time to start than today?
Jayden Phillips
Real Fucking World
Jayden walked a few blocks down from her house frightened. Although she grew up in the hood, she was sheltered most of her life. Despite what her mother was doing to her, she loved her, and she wished she could love her in return.
But she wasn’t blind or stupid, she could see the hate in her mother’s eyes when she looked at her. She was learning very early that if you wanted to survive you had to take care of yourself.
Jayden walked down the street with only her jacket in tow. Her beautiful long hair was tied in a knot in the back of her head and she looked loss. A few cars beeped their horns at her although she was wearing clothes that were boyish and hid her real figure. But anyone with eyes could tell that she was still beautiful.
After turning down a few honks, she decided to accept the next offer. Thoughts of her twin sister being in a dark hole horrified her. As far as Jayden was concerned, Madjesty was the only one she had in the whole world and she needed her happy and in the right frame of mind. Both of them had to be strong if they were going to deal with their mother. Harmony was becoming more and more irrational by the day.
When a white Hummer pulled up next to her, she smiled at an older man in his late thirties. She didn’t know the first thing about being sexy, considering she was forced by her mother to hide her femininity most of her life. Now she had to call on her intuition to be what she was born to be...A girl.
You want a ride?” the man said. Jayden didn’t respond. “Aw, come on, cutie, I ain’t gonna hurt you none. Where you going?”
Uh…I’m not sure.”
Well let’s think of that together. Because if you’re out here alone then you must need a ride right?” He smiled.
I guess so.”
So let me help you.”
Okay,” she smiled oddly. “That’ll be nice.”
Good, I don’t want to see someone like you get hurt.”
She hopped into his car and Ashanti’s song ‘Foolish’ played on the stereo. It was perfect because she didn’t know anything about the real world since Harmony had not prepared her. It was like Harmony wanted them to fail. But Jayden was smart enough to know that money ruled everything and if she wanted to have any sort of life, and if she wanted to help her sister, she had to bring it.
Do you know where you going yet, beautiful?” He asked. The man was very attractive but she could tell he was at least twenty years older than her. “And why you walking out on this highway alone?”
No reason.” She said hunching her shoulders. “I guess I needed some fresh air.”
Fresh air huh?” He asked staring at her inquisitively. “So where am I taking you?”
I don’t know. Wherever you want.”
He smiled. “Wherever I want?” He repeated. “Ain’t you too young to be talking about wherever I want? I mean, an old fart like me could get the wrong impression. You wouldn’t want me getting the wrong impression now would you?” He placed his hand on her thigh and rubbed it repeatedly.
I don’t understand your question.”
Come on, cutie. You know what I’m talking about.”
Actually I don’t. But I do know this…Everything costs in this world.” Jayden said feeling an ounce of boldness.
Did your mother or father teach you that already?”
I don’t know my father but yes, my mother did teach me.”
I knew I liked you.” He laughed. “How old are you anyway?”
He was starting to get disgusting with his stares and each time he looked at her, she wanted to run out of the car. But she thought about Madjesty and she pushed herself to be bolder.
I’m old enough. If that’s what you’re asking.”
Old enough for what?”
It depends on what you want.”
The man looked at her knowingly and pulled over. Then he looked around the truck from the inside to be sure no one was coming.
Is that right?” He asked pushing her seat back before doing his own. “’Cause I like the sound of that shit.”
Then he unzipped his pants and pulled out his dick. All of a sudden things escalated real quickly and Jayden wasn’t prepared for any of it.
So what do you want to do and what do you want me to pay you for it?” He said licking his lips. “’Cause I don’t mind paying a sexy young thing like yourself for the right services.”
Jayden looked at him nervously. She knew she’d probably have to have sex with him, but was hoping things would go a little slower at first.
Uh…I…”
What you gonna do, girl?” He yelled yanking his ashy dick harder. He was growing annoyed and didn’t want to miss a chance of having her wrap her mouth around his dick. “Come over here and get this money.”
Uh…How much…How much you gonna give me?”
How much you want?”
One hundred…One hundred dollars.” She stuttered.
Then you got it.” He said reaching toward her. “That ain’t no problem at all.”
Well let me see the money first.”
The moment he was distracted and reached for his wallet, she bolted out of the door and ran as far as she could down the street. Even when she had gotten enough space between them, she still ran crying the entire way.
Where are you going?!” He yelled at her. “Come back! I’ll take you where you got to go!!!”
Jayden couldn’t stop. She just ran and cried and ran and cried until she ended up back home, empty-handed. She walked slowly to the front door already knowing what her mother was giving. Scared, she mustered up enough energy, to knock on the door.
