She took a deep, shaky breath, crossing her arms over her stomach.

“Is that a good thing?” she sister asked softly.

Cerise couldn’t answer right away.  Everything was going to be different now.  She had to tell Kyle.  She couldn’t know how anything would be without talking to him first.  She picked up her cell phone from the counter, dialed the number.  Her sister squeezed her arm in encouragement.  After a few rings, Kyle’s voice came over the line, warm and friendly.

“Hello?”

“Hi, it’s me.  I have something important I need to tell you.”

Immediately, his voice was serious, “what is it?  Are you alright?”

“Um..”

“That’s not a very good time to pause.  What’s the matter?”

“Oh hon, I’m pregnant.  I just took the test.

For a long time the other end was silent.  Cerise almost wondered if the call had been dropped.  She wondered if she would have to call him again, but faintly she could hear the sounds of the cows mooing in the background.

“You’ll need a better place to live then.  Kids shouldn’t be kept cooped up in small apartments,” he said after a long pause.  “I’ll clear out a room for you.”

“What?”

“We’ll get him a little pony, when he’s old enough, and teach him to ride,” Kyle continued, ignoring what Cerise was saying.

“Wait.  What are you talking about?  I don’t…” her voice trailed off.

“You’re right.  It could be a girl.  If it’s a girl, we’ll get her a pony anyway.  Everyone on a farm should be able to ride.  We could even get a horse for you.”

She waited on the line until he stopped talking.  “You’re not mad?”

“Mad?  Why would I be mad?  This is amazing.  I’ve only been this happy once in my life before,” she could almost hear him smile over the phone.

“When was that?” Cerise asked, her nerves starting to lessen.  Things would be okay.  She smiled, and her sister stood up, walking out of the bathroom.

“When I met you.”
