The next week was the same. They talked until their drinks got cold, and the coffee shop had to close, and then they agreed to meet again. It quickly became the best part of her week. She would have her outfit chosen by Wednesday, and would spent all day Friday thinking about it. But Cerise wanted something more, she wanted him. All of him. On the next week, as they were leaving, she turned to him. She moved her fingers around nervously. She had thought about how to ask, but it never seemed to come out right. It always seemed forced, and awkward. She thought about all the practicing she had done, but she couldn’t remember it. Her mind was empty, everything she had planned to say was gone.
“I wondered if you wanted to come back to my place,” she said finally, her voice quiet.
He was silent for a moment. Inwardly, she groaned. She’d blown it now, he was never going to want to talk to her again. The silence seemed to stretch on forever. She shifted awkwardly from foot to foot, looking at the ground. There was a crack in the sidewalk under her feet, she wished it would open up and she could fall right in.
Slowly he smiled, “I don’t think I’d mind that at all.”
They walked to the parking lot, behind the coffee shop, and climbed into his truck. She could feel herself starting to get nervous. Maybe this was going to be a bad decision, maybe she should stop him now. But she lived close, and the ride was short. He pulled into her parking lot, and parked the truck. They were quiet on the elevator, and as she led him to her apartment.
She let him in, and when she locked the door and turned around, she saw the apartment how he must be seeing it. It was small, and sparsely furnished, but at least it was clean, she had remembered to do that this morning. She didn’t spend much time here, preferring to visit her sister and nephew. Holding his hand, and walked around the apartment. It was a very quick tour, it wasn’t a very big space. After a few minutes, they were back in the living room, and sat down on the couch.
“Do you want a coffee or something like that?”
“No, thanks. But there is something I missed out on earlier.”
She smiled, guessing what he meant. He turned to her, and leaned over, her lips meeting his. It felt like energy was pouring into her. It started at her lips and flowed throughout her body. She moved her arms across his shoulders, feeling his muscles under his shirt. He wrapped his hands around her waist, pulling her closer to him. She could feel the heat coming off his body, it felt like it was burning through her, setting her on fire. Her hands moved around his shoulders, pressing against his chest. Carefully she started to undo the buttons on his shirt. Carefully pulling each button through the hole, pulling it open wider as she went. As the shirt fell open, she trailed her fingers against his skin. He pulled away from their kiss, and looked at her, smiling. He reached down, pulling her shirt over her head. He let it fall to the floor next to the couch. He leaned into her again, kissing her neck. She sighed as he moved down her neck, and along her collarbone. His hands moved up from her waist, brushing against the soft skin of her breasts. She gasped, pleasantly surprised. She looked down, and watched his hands on her. They were so light against her dark skin. They moved up, her breasts filling his hands. He held them, pressed together, and lowered his lips down to them. She moaned slightly as his lips moved across her breasts, his thumbs brushing against her nipples. She stood up, and took his hand, pulling him across to her bedroom. As they walked he pulled off his jeans, and she kicked off her dark skirt. She pulled him towards the bed, and let herself collapse onto it. He fell down next to her, and shifted until he was straddling her.
“I could just look at you forever,” he said quietly, looking down at her.
She smiled, and reached up, wrapping her hands around his back, pulling him down closer to her, “but there’s something else I want you to do.”
He kissed her again, before moving down to suck her nipple. She gasped and moaned, her fingers tightening on his shoulders. She wanted him, she wanted him so bad it hurt. Her body needed him. Her moans grew louder, as he started pulling slightly on her nipple, her body moving under his. It was good, so good. She wanted him to hurry, and at the same time, she wanted him to go slow. She wanted to feel him inside her. She moved her legs farther apart, and her moans got louder as he pushed himself into her wet pussy. He pushed into her slow and deep, her body tensed and arched as he moved. Her hands moved down his back, her fingers digging into his skin. His breath sounded loud in her ears, coming faster, and faster. She screamed as she came, her legs wrapping around his hips, pushing him deeper into her. After a moment she felt him tense and shudder against her, his breath coming in gasps. He buried his face against her neck. She leaned her head against his, their breath starting to return to normal. A few minutes later, he moved, laying beside her. He lay on his side, looking at her, propping his head up on his hand. He took his hand, lacing his fingers through hers. He lifted her hand, and kissed it. She blushed slightly and pressed herself close to him. Slowly, he let go of her hand, and stroked her hair, before wrapping his arm around her shoulders, holding her against him. She moved her arm, wrapping it around his waist, and leaned her head against his chest. She could hear his heart beat, as it slowed to normal.
She was almost sleeping when she heard a phone ring from far away. Drowsily she opened her eyes, and blinked, trying to think of where it was coming from. The ringtone didn’t sound familiar. She pressed her face against Kyle’s chest, breathing in his scent, feeling him move as he breathed slowly. Suddenly, she realized it must have been his phone, that’s why she didn’t recognize it. She pulled away slightly, he had fallen asleep, their arms and legs tangled together. Gently she shook him, waking him up. He smiled as his eyes opened. He moved towards her, kissing her forehead.
“I think you’re phone was ringing,” she whispered.
“Oh well,” he said, not moving, she could feel his lips against her skin.
She giggled, and wiggled over closer to him. After a few minutes, the phone started ringing again. He sighed. Reluctantly he pulled away from her, and rolled over to the edge of the bed. Looking for his pants, he stood up, and picked up his jeans. She watched him, the dim light from outside shining on his white skin, his muscles moving as he walked, his firm ass as he walked. Somewhere inside her, she could feel the fire starting to burn in her again. His voice sounded concerned, as he talked to someone on the other end. After a few minutes, he hung up the phone, and started looking around for his clothes. She propped herself up on her arm, and frowned at him.
“What’s up?”
He looked at her and sighed, “some of the cows got loose, and now some are hurt,” he picked up his jeans and slipped them on. “I don’t want to leave you, especially when you’re looking like that…”
“But no,” she protested, sitting up. “You really do have to go.”
He sighed again, pulling on his shirt and looking at her, “I know.”
She sat up, and wrapped her blanket around her shoulders. She stood up, and followed him out of her bedroom, and through the rest of her apartment. At the door, they stopped. He looked at her, and sighed again.
“Call me, when you can,” she said quietly. “I hope everything goes okay.”
Instead of answering, he held her face in his hands, and kissed her again. Cerise pressed herself against him, wishing he could stay, wishing his phone would ring again, and tell him that everything was fine. But it didn’t. After a long moment, he pulled away from her and left. She locked the door behind him, and sat down on the floor. It wasn’t quite the night that she had wanted.
He didn’t call the next day, or the next. Cerise began to feel doubts creep in. Maybe she had done the wrong thing, taking him to bed. Maybe that’s all he’d wanted, and now she’d never see him again. Maybe he just didn’t want what she wanted. But she had been so sure, they were so right together, but maybe she had been fooling herself the whole time. Well, fine, she told herself, if that’s how he’s going to be, then it’s better that I never see him again. She tried to put him out of her mind, and carry on with her life, but it was hard. Sometimes she would imagine herself with him again, imagine what it was like to feel his hands on her skin, to feel his lips on her breasts. The next day, her phone rang loudly. She looked around, convinced that everyone in the office had heard. She dug her phone out of her desk drawer and looked at it. It was a text message, from Kyle, saying ‘sorry about the wait. See you again Fri?’. She smiled at her phone, before texting him ‘yes’, with a sigh of relief. She hadn’t been wrong after all. As soon as she pressed send, her heart lightened. Knowing she would be seeing him again seemed to make the whole week look better. That was when she knew, she was absolutely, utterly in love with that farmer.
Every week after that was close to the same. They would go to the coffee shop, or sometimes a restaurant, and then go back to her apartment. Sometimes he would have to leave right away, but sometimes he spent the time, and those were her favourite times. She would wake up feeling safe and warm, his arms around her.
She lost count of the nights they had spent together, lying safe and warm with him in her bed, or just watching a movie on the couch. Sometimes they just sat quietly together, and sometimes they talked about what they would do in the future. A future that seemed to involve them being together more and more.
“Cerise,” her sister said, as they sat down at the kitchen table. “Is there something you want to talk to me about?”
“What are you talking about?”
“You seem….different,” her sister replied, thinking of how to say what she wanted.
“Well, I have been feeling a bit off,” Cerise finally admitted.
She had been feeling bad for a couple weeks. And more and more often, smelling certain foods, even ones she’d loved made it worse. Some mornings she barely ate anything, there was no point since she was just going to throw it all up again.
“I think you better get used to that feeling, honey. I think you might be pregnant. That’s exactly how I felt when I was with Denzel.”
“What? Oh no. I don’t think so,” Cerise shook her head. That just wasn’t possible. Or maybe it was, she did sometimes forget to take her birth control pills.
Her sister gave a sympathetic smile, “if you say so. But you should do the test just to make sure.”
“I don’t need to take any test.”
“Please. Just one. Do it for me. If it’s negative, I won’t say anything more about it,” her sister continued.
Cerise looked at her sister through narrowed eyes, but agreed to take a test. Anything to get her sister off her back. She could be like a dog with a bone when she got an idea about something.
“Do it today. Get one on your way home.”
“Would it make you happy if I went to get one right now?” She asked, getting angry.
Her sister gave a small smile, “well, actually. Since you mention it, that would make me happy.”
“Fine, anything that will make you happy.”
Cerise stood up, and stalked to the door. She picked up her coat and purse, and slammed the door on her way out. She got into her car, and pulled out on to the road, stopping at the first drug store she found. She went through the store looking at other things, not wanting people to notice what she was looking for. She bought it quickly, trying not to meet anyone’s eye, and hurried back to the car. She sat in the car, the small bag sitting on the seat next to her, fear creeping up her body. What if she was pregnant? What would she do? What would Kyle say? She groped in her purse for her phone, and dialled.
“Hello?” Her sister picked it up after the first ring.
“Can I take the test with you?”
“Sure. Come over now.”
She went back to her sister’s apartment, and pulled the small box out of her bag. She took the test, and set it on the bathroom floor. The two sisters sat on the bathroom floor, holding hands, waiting to see what it said. Slowly it started to change colours. When it finished Cerise picked it up, and looked at it.
“What does that mean?”
Her sister smiled, and squeezed her hand, “honey, it means you’re pregnant.”
