CHAPTER ELEVEN
The only thing that was fading was the memory of Jen's voice. Her scent was everywhere in the room, her image emblazoned on their walls in pictures and news articles. But the voice that had soothed her to sleep, had cried out in ecstasy, had laughed... that was fading. And the loss brought on a whole new round of pain.
Amy lifted the picture up again, staring at the wild curls and infectious grin. So beautiful, so full of life, and yet she'd been snuffed out so easily.
What hurt the worst, though, was that one broken promise brought her all this heartbreak. If Jen had simply kept her promise to not keep secrets, to trust her, maybe this could be avoided. Maybe instead of a funeral she would be going to a movie or a football game. Maybe her girlfriend would be holding her hand and teasing her when she mislabeled the kicker and the quarterback instead of lying in a wooden coffin about to be six feet under.
Putting the picture down, Amy gave herself one last look in the mirror. After an hour or so of work she simple looked like a grieving friend rather than a grieving lover. Given that Jen's homosexuality was being partially blamed for her emotional instability (her parents had said something about her homosexuality being a 'sickness' and it was all the girl could do not to punch them both) it seemed more appropriate to play down what she was. Black dress, simple shoes, simple make up, and yet, despite the familiar attire and technically familiar attributes, Amy saw a stranger. When she looked in the mirror it wasn't her looking back, it was some strange woman with sad, hard eyes.
Funny how one single moment really could change everything, particularly about the people it affects the most.
A knock on the door disrupted her thoughts. That would be Damien and Jody, come to escort her. Of all the people asking after her they were the most vigilant. Understandably given what had happened the last time. But Amy had no intentions of following Jen. Nor did she have any intentions of sharing. No, she had learned what happened when you opened your heart and trusted someone. Inevitably the told a lie to big and the happiness you built with them came tumbling down. Better to keep her self distanced.
"Hello guys," she said as she pulled the door open. Both of them were dress somberly, like her, and it was especially startling on Jody.
"Are you ready to go?" Damien asked quietly. Amy spared one last glance around the room. Jen's things were already gone and hers were half-packed. She was moving in with him for the rest of the semester, unable to remain with the memories even until summer break. Apparently she took to long to reply because both boys fixed her with a concerned stare. "Amy, are you okay?"
No. No she wasn't and likely wouldn't ever be again. But she pulled on a neutral face and buried those emotions down deep. Time to put on another performance. And to say goodbye for the last time.
"I'm fine," she said softly, shutting the door on her past. "Let's get this over with."
